Nickelodeon has reportedly renewed the network's beloved animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants, for season 16! The news comes hot on the fins of the show becoming the longest-running animated children's series, taking the crown from Arthur.
It's currently unknown how many episodes SpongeBob SquarePants season 16 will contain, however, over the past year, Nickelodeon has been splitting seasons that were initially ordered for 26 episodes into halves, with the latter 13 episodes going on to make up a new season. This is to keep their sizes more consistent with the season lengths currently consumed on streaming services, such as Paramount+, where all shows ultimately end up.
This is what happened with SpongeBob season 14, with several episodes produced for that season going on to make up season 15, with episodes from that season, initially ordered for 26 episodes, reportedly going on to make up season 16.
SpongeBob season 16 was revealed by sound effects designer and editor Jeffrey Hutchins, who announced on his official Twitter feed that he had started working on the first episode of this season, "Bizarro Bottom" and "Squidward’s Tough Break," albeit referring to it as "season 15," due to the series being on its fifteenth production season.
In "Bizarro Bottom." SpongeBob falls asleep on the bus and ends up in a strange town full of Bikini Bottom doppelgangers. Then in "Squidward's Tough Break," after Squidward loses his memory, he adopts a new tough guy persona. (#320)
It is important to note, however, that a sixteenth season of SpongeBob SquarePants is still to be confirmed by Nickelodeon.
Since its launch July 17, 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has generated a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most widely distributed properties in Paramount history, seen in more than 180 markets, translated in 30+ languages, and averaging more than 90 million total viewers every quarter. SpongeBob SquarePants was created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif. The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurable optimist and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends.
