Magic: The Gathering Announces 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Set at MagicCon Chicago 2025

Water. Earth. Fire. Air… Magic.

Bend the battlefield with Magic cards from Avatar: The Last Airbender!

Revealed by surprise by Wizards of the Coast as a part of MagicCon Chicago 2025 and based on Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, Magic: The Gathering's MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender is a fully Standard-legal set that allows players to "master the elements and join your favorite characters for new adventures, iconic art, and an elemental showdown like never before."

The collaboration will be the latest in Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond initiative, a series of crossover event-style card sets that have brought the likes of Wolverine and Sephiroth into the game.

According to the announcement, MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender will be hitting shelves on November 21. It's unclear what the set will involve in terms of products, but we can probably expect something similar to the Assassin's Creed crossover last year. (Play and Collector boosters at a minimum, in other words.)

"Long ago the four nations lived in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Now Magic: The Gathering will master the elements and bring the story of Avatar: The Last Airbender to a new format," MTG teased on YouTube. "Gather your own Team Avatar and experience the journey you know and love through the lens of Magic with Magic: The Gathering® | Avatar the Last Airbender™."

As the Avatar: The Last Airbender MTG set will be Standard legal, players can use these elemental bending cards alongside other classic MTG cards in a regular game. The same is now also true for all of the Universes Beyond sets, although many of these cards were originally not marketed or released as Standard legal decks. This change is a relatively recent one, and it makes the landscape of MTG a bit more like Super Smash Bros. than it ever previously was. The decision has been somewhat controversial among those MTG fans who preferred the game as it was (with its own fantasy lore and world established), but Universes Beyond also clearly presents an opening for lapsed fans and total newcomers to pick up MTG based on their attachment to the various IPs on display.

As spin-offs go, MTG has been having a bumper couple of years. Following Lord of the Rings and Warhammer's addition to one of the most popular card games, Fallout, the Assassin's Creed franchise, Marvel, and Final Fantasy have all been added to the lineup. Considering how popular the latter has been (MTG Final Fantasy Commander decks cost 40% more than an average precon, but that hasn’t stopped them from selling out almost immediately), it seems like interest is only growing in the Universes Beyond label.

When it comes to drawing in new fans, it makes sense to see Avatar: The Last Airbender as the next item on Wizards’ slate, following closely on the heels of the Final Fantasy MTG card reveals earlier this week. Fans already know that Wizards has more Universes Beyond crossovers coming in 2025, and they’re likely to be similarly huge IPs, if the previous examples are anything to go by.

The news comes as Avatar: The Last Airbender is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
