SpongeBob SquarePants is surrounded by all types of theories, and one of the biggest ones has now been confirmed, but with an added twist that makes it a lot more sinister.
Nickelodeon is home to many beloved and successful animated series, and by far, its biggest one is SpongeBob SquarePants. Created by the late Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants premiered in 1999 and has been unstoppable ever since, spawning a franchise covering spinoff shows, movies, books, and more. In addition to that, SpongeBob and his closest friends have now become a major part of pop culture.
Of course, being a cartoon aimed at children, there’s no logic in SpongeBob SquarePants nor proper continuity, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from coming up with all types of theories about it. SpongeBob SquarePants is set in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, where the title character lives and works, alongside his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor Squidward, his boss Mr. Krabs, and his beloved pet, Gary the Snail. Bikini Bottom is like any typical city but underwater, but it now has a confirmed origin thanks to one of the show’s most popular theories but with an extra sinister twist: it turns out that SpongeBob and his the rest of Bikini Bottom do live in a nuclear test site.
Bikini Bottom is as inconsistent as the show itself and that’s ok – after all, continuity has never been a priority for the team behind SpongeBob SquarePants. Still, this and more hasn’t been an impediment for viewers to come up with all types of theories about this one-of-a-kind city. The most popular theory about not only Bikini Bottom but the show in general is one that says Bikini Bottom was a nuclear test site. The theory comes from Reddit, and the author got inspiration from real-life history.
"Bikini Atoll was used for nuclear testing from 1946 to 1958, so according to the theory, this is why Bikini Bottom is now home to sea creatures who talk."
The author explains that Bikini Bottom is named like that because it’s located under Bikini Atoll, a coral reef in the Marshall Islands consisting of 23 islands. Bikini Atoll was used for nuclear testing from 1946 to 1958, so according to the theory, this is why Bikini Bottom is now home to sea creatures who talk, go to work, drive, play instruments, and do pretty much everything humans do, with some added cartoonish extras. Another Redditor adds that chipmunks were among the animals on board Navy vessels during the nuclear tests, which explains Sandy’s character.
The theory has some truth as Bikini Bottom was confirmed to be located beneath Bikini Atoll and one of the bombs was detonated underwater. The explosion was photographed, and every time there’s a big explosion on the show, the shape of the explosion is replicated. The theory has now been confirmed by cast member and writer Mr. Lawrence in an interview with Esquire, who said that was part of the fun of the show and how far they were taking the concept of Bikini Bottom being a nuclear test site – but this came with a twist that clashes with the rest of the franchise.
Mr. Lawrence not only confirmed that Bikini Bottom was a nuclear test site and that’s why SpongeBob and every other sea creature can talk and be pretty much humans underwater, but he also mentioned what happened to the human world. Mr. Lawrence said that the whole world is dead except for Bikini Bottom, reiterating that “the world upstairs is gone” and all that’s left is Bikini Bottom. While this gives a very sinister twist to the now-confirmed Bikini Bottom/nuclear test site theory, it doesn’t make much sense.
Surely, most of SpongeBob SquarePants takes place underwater, in Bikini Bottom and nearby places, but early on in the series there were brief appearances of humans “upstairs”. An example is the episode “Frankendoodle”, from season 2, in which an artist in a rowboat is making a sketch when his pencil slips and falls into the sea, landing between SpongeBob and Patrick. David Hasselhoff also made a cameo as himself in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
Of course, there’s also Patchy the Pirate (played by SpongeBob’s voice actor, Tom Kenny), who also made his first appearance in season 2 and went on to appear many more times throughout the show, so it isn’t entirely true that the world “upstairs” is gone and all that’s left is Bikini Bottom and its inhabitants.
Bikini Bottom being a nuclear test site is definitely dark, but it’s also greatly beneficial to SpongeBob SquarePants. As mentioned above, SpongeBob SquarePants isn’t a show that should be taken seriously and in which continuity is important, but it’s also inevitable for the audience to question many things about it. The nuclear test site theory being confirmed should bring some relief to those wondering why sea creatures can talk and do everything humans do, and it should also put an end to the old question of why fire can exist underwater – just blame it on the nuclear tests.
The theory also explains why humans aren’t so surprised to see a talking sea sponge (this is mostly seen in the movies), as they know the effects that the nuclear tests had in that area (and probably many others). Mr. Lawrence’s addition of the human world being gone and Bikini Bottom being all that’s left wouldn't make sense this far into the franchise as it clashes with both the shows and the movies, but the rest of the theory explains the biggest mysteries of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Mr. Lawrence and other SpongeBob SquarePants cast members explain how characters are connected to the Seven Deadly Sins.
The beloved animated Nickelodeon series SpongeBob SquarePants, which follows the humorous escapades of SpongeBob and other Bikini Bottom residents, has spawned many fan theories over the years. Among them is speculation that each character represents one of the major sins taught in Christianity: SpongeBob himself is lust, Patrick is sloth, Squidward is wrath, Sandy is pride, Mr. Krabs is greed, Plankton is envy, and Gary the Snail is gluttony.
During a reunion video for Esquire, the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants addressed this theory, among others, with Squidward’s voice actor Rodger Bumpass noting similarities between Patrick and Mr. Krabs and their sins, but no one else. Lawrence, a writer who also voices Plankton, explained that while characters likely have individual distinctions, it may not be as concrete as pairing them with one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Read his comments below:
I think the idea was, it’s like the Seven Deadly Sins. It’s like Gilligan’s Island, where each character represents something and I think all of us represent a specific kind of thing that’s sort of not as tangible as saying, ‘It’s lust. It’s this, it’s that.’
Despite parallels between SpongeBob SquarePants characters and their theoretical Deadly Sin, these comments by Lawrence and other cast members suggest the idea wasn’t considered when writing the series. That may be more evident when it comes to Plankton, someone whose rivalry with Mr. Krabs and obsession with knowing the Krabby Patty formula would typically point right to envy. However, Plankton’s self-interest and belligerent attacks also correlate with pride and wrath. Similarly, Squidward’s animosity toward SpongeBob and others makes him wrathful, but he can be vain as well.
As mentioned in the video, there is a connection between Patrick and gluttony, but the Seven Deadly Sins theory actually has the starfish representing sloth instead, which makes sense, given his lackadaisical tendencies. SpongeBob as lust appeared to be a confusing choice, with voice actor Tom Kenny revealing that his character would simply want to work more at the Krusty Krab. However, with gluttony being reserved for Gary, and pride and greed as the most logical options for Sandy and Mr. Krabs, the latter being accurately linked to money, lust is the only remaining sin.
The SpongeBob SquarePants theory regarding the Seven Deadly Sins likely caught on because it is strangely accurate. There may be overlaps between certain vices and characters, as many of them appear suitable -- some more than others -- but it manages to remain one of the more reasonable fan-generated ideas yet. Lawrence’s comments indicate that it was unintentional, but can still be something for audiences to have fun with, especially when looking back on the show.

A longtime writer and voice actor for SpongeBob SquarePants confirms a popular fan theory about Bikini Bottom's origins as being correct.
There are many dark fan theories about SpongeBob SquarePants that try to explain elements of the show, such as the Chum Bucket serving actual dead fish, which is what chum is made of in real life, to Pearl being adopted after her parents were killed by whalers. However, some fan theories have also tried to explain the origins of Bikini Bottom, making sense of why the sea creatures in the underwater city have human sentience.
During a conversation with Esquire featuring all the main cast members of SpongeBob SquarePants, Mr. Lawrence, who portrays Plankton and has written multiple episodes of the show, confirmed the fan theory that Bikini Bottom was the result of nuclear testing. At about 4:16, he explained how the show represented theoretical results of the real-world atomic testing in Bikini Atoll, with the writer going further to claim the show takes place after a post-apocalyptic war. Check out what Lawrence had to say below:
Roger Bumpass: I always like the theory that the whole thing was related to the atomic testing in Bikini Atoll.
Mr. Lawrence: And that is true! That is absolutely true.
Roger Bumpass: It is true? I've been telling people it wasn't true!
Mr. Lawrence: No, yeah, that's absolutely true. That was part of the fun of it, was, how far are we taking that concept. I mean, right at the beginning when we were sort of developing it in the first season, it was like, "Are we going to play off of this apocalyptic thing?" Like, the whole world is dead except for Bikini Bottom.
Bill Fagerbakke: So the mufflers, were the mufflers a part of that? How everyone's house is a muffler?
Mr. Lawrence: Yeah, it was all different. Just, the world upstairs is gone, and this is what's left.
Lawrence's confirmation of SpongeBob SquarePants' nuclear testing theory finally answers a major mystery surrounding why Bikini Bottom is the way it is. There's also a darker implication to what the writer implies, saying the original plan was for the human world to be destroyed, or in a post-apocalyptic state. This doesn't line up with how the show is presented now, however, with human society showing up in various forms across the series and movies. However, it still proves the theory about atomic testing as canon to the franchise.
This also extends to other locations that contain various anthropomorphic fish, like New Kelp City and Bass Vegas. This indicates everything happening in the series is contained within the Bikini Atoll area, which has likely split into various factions since the first bombs dropped. While Lawrence's confirmation opens the door for further exploration of the idea as SpongeBob SquarePants season 15 continues, it could also just arrive in the form of future hints that emphasize these original ideas now that they've been confirmed. An episode of spin-off series The Patrick Star Show has also hinted at the theory.
With Lawrence having confirmed the major fan theory, it appears many clues scattered throughout SpongeBob SquarePants really were pointing to the idea being correct. It also opens the door for more theorization, especially now that it's been revealed humanity was supposed to be in a post-apocalyptic state when the series began. Although his statement answers one question, there's still plenty of ideas that fans can still analyze across the show's hundreds of episodes.

The cast of SpongeBob SquarePants recently gathered to reflect on the show’s legacy, and one star floated a playful idea for the perfect series finale. Since the show’s debut in 1999, the beloved Nickelodeon series has followed SpongeBob’s underwater adventures in Bikini Bottom, with one running gag centering on the titular character's chaotic attempts to earn his driver’s license. However, the titular character continues to fail his boating test, which has become central to storylines with his teacher, Mrs. Puff (voiced by Mary Jo Catlett).
In a recent reunion with Esquire, Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Roger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) sat down to reflect on 25 years of SpongeBob SquarePants. While no plans for a series finale have been announced for SpongeBob SquarePants, Fagerbakke and C. Lawrence tossed around the idea of SpongeBob finally passing his boating test for a potential final episode. Check out the reunion here:
Fagerbakke: "I think we'll know it's the final season of the show, as SpongeBob gets his boating license."
Carolyn Lawrence: "Maybe he should get it, and then it's a mistake. Mrs Puff gives him the license, and then it's like, HAH!"
Having SpongeBob finally pass his boating test as a potential finale would tie together one of the show’s longest-running jokes. For over two decades, his disastrous driving lessons with the long-suffering Mrs. Puff have been a memorable gag. If SpongeBob were to succeed in passing the test, it could offer a rare moment of achievement for the character, whose optimism often overshadows his lack of skill. Even in victory, there’s room for the show's signature chaos, with his new license paving the way for more hilarity rather than resolution.
Moreover, such a finale would also celebrate the series' ability to make the simplest, most relatable struggles endlessly entertaining. SpongeBob’s boating school adventures have consistently resonated with viewers because his failures reflect his boundless enthusiasm and resilience. These poignant qualities have endeared him to audiences of all ages. Ending the series on this note would underline those themes while serving as a nod to SpongeBob SquarePants' signature comedy.
Ohhh SpongeBob
A finale built around his boating test would be the perfect ending to SpongeBob SquarePants since the idea captures everything that makes the show memorable. The silly yet sincere episodic storytelling, along with a commitment to its characters’ quirks, has given joy to many viewers for a little over 25 years. While it is not yet determined if this concept will ever become reality, imagining SpongeBob finally earning his license (or even hilariously failing one last time) feels like a satisfying ending that would leave audiences smiling.
