Hollywood Flashback: Dropped Slime Boosted Ratings for ‘You Can’t Do That on Television’

The Canadian kids sketch comedy show brought green goop — and a hit — to a fledging Nickelodeon in 1982.

The kids’ sketch comedy show 'You Can’t Do That on Television' slimed anyone who said “I don’t know” — and its ratings success played a big part in Nickelodeon investing more in original programming.

The team behind the low-budget Canadian kids’ sketch show You Can’t Do That on Television didn’t know it would help define the Nickelodeon brand when it premiered 45 years ago.

British TV producer Roger Price had created several children’s programs in the U.K. before moving to Canada, where he aimed to launch a show that respected kids’ perspectives and didn’t condescend to them. Price wasn’t one to glamorize childhood, having endured a tough upbringing that included boarding school in Switzerland.

Inspired by adult-focused programs like Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, YCDTOT featured mostly amateur child actors playing kids who were putting on their own TV show while dealing with incompetent adults. Premiering on CJOH-TV in Ottawa on Feb. 3, 1979, it earned the stateside attention of fledgling network Nickelodeon, which began airing episodes in early 1982 to big ratings.

“With 30-second sketches, there’s no room for filler,” Abby Hagyard, an adult castmember who played the show’s “Mom,” recalled to The Hollywood Reporter.

Now a Nickelodeon signature, getting slimed originated on YCDTOT. Green goop would fall on anyone who said “I don’t know” — Price chose that trigger because his own kids used the phrase to avoid taking responsibility. Price initially assumed the cast would hate getting slimed, but he was quickly proven wrong.

“It was an honor to be slimed,” says Adam Greydon Reid, who joined YCDTOT as a castmember at age 11 after sending a letter to Price, and would later write episodes with him as a teen. (Plus, each castmember earning a $50 inconvenience fee per sliming was a nice perk.)

Among the show’s discoveries were writer Bill Prady, who would later co-create The Big Bang Theory, and a young Alanis Morissette, who appeared in five episodes and impressed castmates by playing her demo tape. The show’s 10-season run continues to live on in pop culture; SNL spoofed it in a 2022 episode, and Ryan Reynolds (who was once engaged to Morissette) immediately cited YCDTOT when asked in a recent interview to name an important Canadian show.

An attempted reboot fell apart several years ago, but Reid has been hearing of renewed interest in bringing it back. Price is open to its return, but only if the tone doesn’t change: “It has to really make kids feel like it’s their show.”

Drake Bell Pitches 'Drake & Josh' Reunion with Onscreen Brother Josh Peck: 'Let's Hit 'em with a Bang'

Following his shocking revelations in Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, Drake Bell hasn’t totally ruled out a return to his roots.

The The Amanda Show actor recently revealed that he and his former onscreen brother Josh Peck have “talked about” a potential reboot of their early aughts Nickelodeon sitcom Drake & Josh, pitching a buddy comedy format for the duo, 20 years after the show premiered.

“I would love to. We’ve talked about it,” Bell told The Patriot-News. “But I also didn’t want to do it when everyone was doing the reboots. It’s like, ‘Okay, of course, let’s do a reboot because everyone’s doing reboots.’ If we’re going to do something, it should be more special. Let’s hit ’em with a bang, instead of, ‘oh, another reboot.'”

He and Peck played the titular odd-couple stepbrothers in the kids show that ran for four seasons from 2004 to 2007, also starring Miranda Cosgrove as their younger sister Megan.

“I don’t think I would do us playing the characters from the show, or having [our sister] Meg,” added Bell. “I think, luckily for us, it’s our names, so we can still play Drake and Josh. But I think it’d be funnier if we go on to doing other buddy comedies, you know. Something that is kind of a surprise, a little different. It would be more interesting.”

Nickelodeon certainly has a precedent for producing direct follow-ups to the series that made Bell and Peck teen stars. It has revived several of its properties from the 1990s and 2000s with their original casts, including Good BurgerZoey 101, and iCarly, the latter of which starred Cosgrove.

The interview comes after the Investigation Discovery documentary series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, in which Bell revealed the abuse he suffered at the hands of Amanda Show dialogue coach Brian Peck (no relation to Josh) while he was a minor on Nickelodeon. Peck pled no contest and was sentenced to 16 months in prison, as well as being ordered to register as a sex offender.

Bell said the support from fans and response to the documentary “has been incredible” as he goes on tour with his fifth album Non-Stop Flight.

“There’s been a ton of support. And when you are diving into something like that, you are very trepidatious. It’s an emotional roller coaster. You don’t know how people are going to react, or what what’s going to happen, or what the aftermath is going to be,” said Bell, adding: “People are coming up and sharing their stories. And it’s been really nice.”

Lyrics:

[Intro (distorted): James]
Love it when you say you love me
Need to hear you say you need me
Girl, I wanna be your only one

[Verse 1: Logan]
Red wine and bouquets
That look on your face
I hope it'll never ever change
Summers and heat waves
That's you and me, babe
I'll never ever be the same

[Pre-Chorus: Kendall]
I love it when you kiss my face
My arms wrapped around your waist
I really really really wanna spend my time with you

[Chorus: James]
'Cause I love it when you say you lovе me
Need to hear you say you need me
Girl, I wanna bе your only one
Everybody needs somebody
So put your body on my body
Only wanna be your only one

[Post-Chorus: Carlos]
Your only one
Only wanna be, only wanna be, only wanna be
Only one
Only wanna be your only one

[Verse 2: Carlos]
Billions of people
I'm choosing you, though
Wherever we go, keeping you close
Never ever letting you go

[Pre-Chorus: Kendall]
Loving you's a piece of cake
Sweetest thing I'll ever taste
I really really really wanna spend my time with you, 'cause I

[Chorus: James, Carlos]
'Cause I love it when you say you love me
Need to hear you say you need me
Girl, I wanna be your only one (Your only one)
Everybody needs somebody
So put your body on my body
Only wanna be your only one

[Post-Chorus: Carlos, James]
Your only one
Only wanna be, only wanna be, only wanna be
Your only one
Only wanna be your only one
Your only one

[Chorus: James, Carlos, Logan]
Love it when you say you love me (Only wanna be, only wanna be)
Need to hear you say you need me (Only wanna be)
Girl, I wanna be your only one (Only wanna be)

MTV and Paramount+ Greenlight New Seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars and Untucked

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars

New York, NY - August 16, 2024 - Following the launch of RuPaul's Drag Race Global All Stars and receiving 10 Emmy® Award Nominations across the franchise, MTV and Paramount+ today announced that RuPaul's Drag Race, RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, and RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars: Untucked have been greenlit for new seasons.

RuPaul's Drag Race will return to MTV for its 17th season after another record breaking year. The season 16 finale, which crowned Nymphia Wind as America's Next Drag Superstar, was the highest-rated episode of Drag Race in 13 years. Also returning is the Emmy® Award-winning after-show, RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked.

Additionally, Paramount+ has renewed RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars for season 10, following the first-ever charity season where Angeria Paris VanMicheals earned a coveted spot in the "Drag Race Hall of Fame" and a supersized donation of $200,000 for the National Black Justice Coalition. The season also included an appearance from Vice President Kamala Harris, reminding viewers about the importance of voting. RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars: Untucked will also return.

Already the most decorated person of color in Emmy® history, RuPaul received his ninth consecutive nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program this year, tying the record for most nominations in the category. RuPaul's Drag Race is nominated in eight categories including Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality Competition Program, Reality Competition Program, Directing For A Reality Program, Casting For A Reality Program, Production Design For A Variety Or Reality Series, Sound Mixing For A Reality Program, Picture Editing For A Structured Reality Or Competition Program and Outstanding Choreography For Variety Or Reality Programming, while RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked also received nominations for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program and Picture Editing For An Unstructured Reality Program.

The show's continued mission to uplift and protect drag performers helped the ACLU's Drag Defense Fund surpass $2M raised this year, driving weekly viewers to donate via a QR code at the end of each episode. Created in partnership with World of Wonder, MTV, and RuPaul's Drag Race, the ACLU Drag Defense Fund has been instrumental in drawing attention to the anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ attacks sweeping the nation by educating the public on attempts to ban drag nationwide.

RuPaul's Drag Race Global All Stars premieres exclusively on Paramount+ starting Friday, August 16 with two all-new episodes. Twelve fan favorites from around the world will each represent their countries as they compete for the title of "Queen of the Mothertucking World," a grand prize of $200,000, and a spot in the International Pavilion at the Drag Race Hall of Fame. ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’ Conquered Netflix. Then the Toy Market. Next up, the Big Screen.

Has it already been 10 seasons? With enough episodes in the can to last through 2027, the best-friend creators of the streaming hit have a bright future all planned out.

Like most people above the age of 6, Jennifer Twomey and Traci Paige Johnson were both flummoxed and fascinated by the sudden popularity of unboxing videos in the mid 2010s. The two best friends — who met while working on Nickelodeon’s megahit Blue’s Clues, which Johnson created in 1996 — couldn’t make sense of it. Clips of kids like Ryan Kaji (Ryan's Mystery Playdate) unwrapping toys seemed to exploit a primordial glitch in toddlers’ developing brains. Where others might have seen the seeds of the threat that social media and user-generated content would pose to traditional kids programming, Paige and Johnson saw an opportunity. Rather than lament or fight the trend, they decided to co-opt it.

“We knew there was something there,” Twomey told The Hollywood Reporter. “But we wanted to take it to the next level. So we started thinking — instead of unboxing a toy or a product, what if we unbox a story?”

Thus was born Gabby’s Dollhouse, the DreamWorks Animation show that premiered on Netflix at the height the pandemic, in January 2021, and has remained the streamer’s top original kids show. Each episode begins with Gabby — played by the irrepressibly bubbly Laila Lockhart Kraner — in her pink and purple bedroom, opening up a tiny gift-wrapped box that shrinks her, Alice in Wonderland-style, and sends her into her dollhouse in animated form to share adventures and solve puzzles with wacky cartoon cats.

Gabby’s Dollhouse shares some DNA with Johnson and Paige’s previous collaboration, the live-action/animation hybrid Blue’s Clues as well as Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. What sets Gabby’s Dollhouse apart is its emphasis on what psychologist Carol Dweck, a strong influence for Twomey and Johnson, calls the “growth mind-set,” an outlook that rewards effort over results. Gabby and her feline friends like to say they “fail fantastically,” and celebrate their mistakes as a stepping stone to success. “We wanted to create a character that really modeled that mind-set,” says Teri Weiss, Executive Vice President (EVP) TV development at DreamWorks. “That element of, ‘I haven’t figured it out yet.’ “

While the uplifting central theme of the show is far from the naked consumerism at the heart of the unboxing phenomenon that inspired it, Gabby has launched a sprawling commercial empire of its own, including partnerships with Lego, Puma, H&M, Crayola and Scholastic. More than 2 million dollhouses have been sold, making it the top preschool toy for the past two years, according to retail tracker Circana. Its brand ecosystem extends to a global stage show, attractions at NBCUniversal theme parks and a deal with Republic Records (another THR Kids Power List honoree) for the show’s original music, which has seen more than 280 million streams across all platforms.

Capping off Gabby’s campaign for cultural dominance is an upcoming feature film, which shot in Vancouver this summer and is scheduled for a September 2025 release.

The 10th season (each season is six episodes) of Gabby’s Dollhouse hit Netflix on Aug. 5, and there are enough episodes in the can to last through 2027. The last of Netflix’s 100-episode order was filmed on its set at Brooklyn’s Windmill Studios in May. After the shoot wrapped, Lockhart gave a heartfelt speech that left the series’ crew in tears.

“We were all sobbing,” recalls Alden Ford, the director of Gabby’s live-action sequences. “It felt like a natural ending point and a big milestone. And it also was just seeing Laila get older, and seeing her slowly and subtly change in the way she approaches the character. This 15-year-old kid who’s, like, so much wiser than all of us.” (Lockhart Kraner turned 16 the following month.)

Filming wasn’t quite over. Ford, Lockhart Kraner and the crew were back on set the next week to film a series of YouTube shorts featuring Gabby doing crafts and solving problems with various celebrities. As she mixed yellow and blue to make green with Nicky Hilton, Lockhart Kraner never let her smile fade between takes. She was riffing, making the best of the unpredictable, laughing off her guest’s occasional mistakes, failing fantastically.

Her relentlessly positive attitude and improvisatory skill — and her expressive eyebrows — are the qualities that won over Johnson and Twomey during the nationwide audition process and convinced them that they had “hit the jackpot,” in Johnson’s words. “She just spoke to us, and we love that she relates to all girls of all ethnicities,” Johnson adds of Lockhart Kraner, who is biracial. “Everybody would see themselves in Gabby.”

Lockhart Kraner, whose previous acting experience consisted of bit parts in a few shows including a recurring role on Black-ish, welcomes the break in filming as she enters junior year at her Boston-area high school. Ironically, she never engaged in the phenomenon that spawned Gabby’s Dollhouse. “I didn’t personally watch unboxings because at that time, I stopped using YouTube,” she says. To this day, she exercises healthy digital discipline. “I have social media, but I’m not the type to post a lot or, like, be an influencer.”

Johnson and Twomey see a future for Gabby well after the 100th episode has been released, by which point Lockhart Kraner will be in college. “The audience is growing up with Laila, and Laila’s growing up with the audience,” says Johnson. “We want to take advantage of that connection and keep it going. And we still have a lot of stories to tell.”

Victury Sports Plays Catch with Hasbro For Peppa Pig, Transformers and Furby Ollyballs

The company will manufacture a range of licensed Peppa Pig, Transformers and Furby Ollyballs, which kids can use to play sports indoors without breaking anything.

Kids with Ollyball

Hasbro has licensed Idaho-based toy company Victury Sports to develop a new range of licensed sports balls featuring its iconic toy franchises.

Ollyball, created by inventor and founder Joseph Burke, allows kids to color in the waterproof ball with markers and crayons.

Victury won a 2019 Toy of the Year award for Ollyball, which is designed for full-speed indoor play. This innovative ball weighs less than an ounce and absorbs impact and force through Victury’s patented KrunchCOR material. The product’s hook is “Play Ball in the House!” because it is meant to spare windows and other breakable items in the home. Kids can also customize its surface using markers to color in pre-printed graphics.

As a Hasbro partner, Victury will manufacture and distribute Peppa PigTransformers and Furby-branded Ollyballs. The company is planning to give the industry a first look at this licensed range at the LA Fall Toy Preview event in September, where it’s hoping to sign new licensors and retailers.

The licensed Peppa PigTransformers and Furby Ollyballs will be available for purchase soon at select retailers across the U.S.

Ollyball x Hasbro Licenses

“This collaboration will bring even more joy and innovation to our worldwide beloved colorable and patented playthings, further cementing Ollyball’s status as a must-have toy for children everywhere,” says Burke. “Get ready for a whole new level of games, education, surprises and ‘full-force indoor play’ from Ollyball.”

Victury signed its first licensing agreement last year with the NBA to make team edition Ollyballs featuring Chicago Bulls, LA Lakers, Boston Celtics, New York Nicks and Golden State Warriors graphics. The company’s other products include glow-in-the-dark Ollyballs.

For more information on the company before the LA Fall Toy Preview, visit the Ollyball website.
