Kids’ Choice Awards 2024: What It’s Really Like to Get Slimed (From Three Kids’ Points of View)

"Scared, intense and fun" was one take on the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Kids slimed at 'Kids' Choice Awards 2024'

It wouldn’t be a Kids’ Choice Awards show without slime. Lots and lots of slime.

And to make sure all that slime behaves like it’s supposed to, Nickelodeon does “lots of testing,” Ashley Kaplan, Executive Vice President (EVP), Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Unscripted & Digital Franchise Studio, told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week.

Nickelodeon graciously allowed THR to go behind the scenes for a portion of that testing to see what it was like to actually get slimed ahead of Saturday’s live broadcast. On Wednesday, THR reporter Kimberly Nordyke took her three kids — son Braden, age 15, and daughters Brianna, age 12, and Brooklyn, age 8 — to Santa Monica to participate in the tests for this year’s show. They were very excited to join the elite ranks of folks who’ve gotten the chance to experience this, including such famous faces as Harrison Ford, Halle Berry, Tom Cruise, James Earl Jones, Rosie O’Donnell, Katy Perry and other stars who’ve previously been slimed at the annual event.

To accommodate the slime, producers have to build a stage that incorporates special plumbing features, which is surely something that is unique to this awards show. In years past, slime has spewed forth out of the ceiling, from the floor, from slime-equipped water guns, from waterfalls, from a carwash and even onto the audience during the awards show, though its first appearance on the network was actually in the ’80s on the series You Can’t Do That on Television. While the slime is typically green, David Beckham, Kobe Bryant and Michael Phelps all have got drenched in gold-colored slime at Kids’ Choice Sports Awards ceremonies, and in 2002, Pink received a shower of pink slime. As for this year, I won’t spoil the surprises here, but we do know that the 2024 show — hosted by SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star — will feature another first: rainbow slime, spurting out of a giant birthday cake, in honor of SpongeBob’s 25th anniversary.

Of course, getting the slime recipe out of anyone involved in the KCAs is like trying to get the Krabby Patty secret recipe, but it’s always fun to ask. What it’s made of is a closely held secret, much like your grandmother’s famous recipe for apple pie, as Nickelodeon has revealed in the past. When THR's Kimberly Nordyke inquired about the substance at the testing, she was playfully told that the slime is comprised of “fun stuff” — but she did learn that it’s nontoxic and safe to ingest.

To suit up for the slime test, Kimberly's three kids decked themselves out in old clothes — though at the last minute, after seeing the first test subject get a faceful of slime, they opted to wear ponchos (a decision they later regretted) — and braced themselves for a giant dousing of the green goo. Afterward, Kimberly asked them what the experience was like. Read below for a transcript of their conversation. (The TL;DR version: They loved it.)

What did it feel like to get slimed?

BROOKLYN The slime came at me hard.

BRADEN I was surprised how hard it pushed me back, and how much came out, too.

BRIANNA It was very slimy. That’s a quote.

Apparently, you can eat it. It’s edible.

BROOKLYN I want to eat it!

How did you feel before walking up to do the testing, before the slime came out?

BROOKLYN I was really scared before getting up there and getting slimed. I felt like, why am I doing this?

BRADEN I was scared, and I was shaking after because of how intense it was.

BRIANNA It was very cold, and I was nervous. I was shaking. It went longer than I thought it would.

BROOKLYN I put the poncho over my face so slime wouldn’t get on my face.

Tell me about the cleanup process.

BRADEN I would not want to do that. I would not want clean it up.

I meant, cleaning yourself up.

BRADEN Oh — not fun.

How long did it take you to clean up?

BRADEN Five minutes.

BRIANNA At least seven. I’m still cleaning up. [In fact, when we got home, they were still finding slime stuck to their body, from their hair down to their feet.]

Would you do it again?

BRADEN Yes, but next time I wouldn’t wear a poncho because I think it would be fun to get more slimed.

BROOKLYN Yes, without a poncho because it would be more fun without it.

How do you think the celebrities feel when they get slimed on stage in their fancy clothes?

BRADEN Surprised.

BRIANNA Upset?

BRADEN I mean, I don’t think they’d be mad because of how much money they have. You know, If I was slimed in a suit, I’d be pretty mad, but they have a lot of money.

BRIANNA Sometimes, I see them change [after they get slimed], so I think they wear a nicer outfit after they get slimed.

BROOKLYN Oh, I don’t think they’re upset because, like, they’re celebrities, isn’t it supposed to happen?

Any advice to give to the stars who are attending the awards show and might end up slimed?

BRADEN Expect it to happen.

BROOKLYN Expect it to be hard.

BRADEN Bring a spare change of clothes.

BRIANNA Don’t wear nice shoes. You’ll regret it.

How would you have felt if you didn’t know it was coming and you were just standing there in your regular clothes?

BRIANNA I would be scared. I’d jump out of the way because I would be scared.

BRADEN I probably would be shocked and scared.

BROOKLYN I’d be happy and surprised.

Do you wish you had a slime machine in your front yard and you could slime people as they walked down the street?

BRIANNA Actually, as long as it doesn’t hit me, yes.

If someone asks, how was the overall experience, what would you say?

BRADEN I would say, intense, worth it and very fun.

BRIANNA Fast, worth it, fun, slimy.

BROOKLYN It came down very hard. Scared, intense and fun.

Is there anything else about sliming that you would tell your friends?

BROOKLYN  I would tell my friends Arianna and Reese that it came down hard, and I would say, “I think you should do it.”

BRIANNA It was messy.

BRADEN I got slimed.

North Texas 9-Year-Old to Be Honored at Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2024

NORTH TEXAS – Saturday night, a North Texas 9-year-old will be honored in a ceremony every kid dreams of – the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2024.

North Texas 9-Year-Old to Be Honored at Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2024

But the recognition didn't come without some hard work. Michael Thompson is a Cedar Hill 4th grader who has spent the past few years advocating for mental health awareness.

"If you don't know how to manage your emotions, you can get really angry," he told CBS Texas.

Michael's mom, Helsa, owns "The Aura House," a meditation and yoga studio in Cedar Hill. She has always tried to teach her kids the power of mindfulness.

"Our kids are growing up in a tough time, so there's a lot of things in the world creating tough emotions for our kids," Helsa said.

Joining in on classes was a way for Michael and his two brothers to regulate their emotions, which then led to their own business: Black Boys Meditate.

"During the pandemic, we had the idea of making a coloring book for kids," Michael said.

The idea expanded into other mindful kid products, like the Affirmation Alphabet Deck, as part of a larger project to uplift underserved communities through mindfulness—spreading peace, one product at a time.

"We make kids feel strong and happy through yoga, meditation, mending our emotions, and using positive affirmations," Michael explains.

Michael's efforts caught the attention of Nickelodeon, which will honor him on Saturday night at the Kids' Choice Awards with a Bronze Jefferson Award for Public Service.

"I was excited, really excited because now I have an award," Michael said.

"We couldn't believe it! That he was going to be on Nickelodeon, oh my gosh," Helsa said.

The Nickelodeon Jefferson Awards are given to the nation's top kid changemakers dedicated to impacting their communities. Helsa says that, at just 9 years old, Michael is doing just that.

"I see him teaching kids, saying affirmations. I think that's the most beautiful part. Not only the business part, but that he has internalized these techniques that make him a better person," she said.

You can see Michael be honored on Nickelodeon on July 13 at 7 p.m. CST.

Comedy Central Slated to Premiere 'Ren & Stimpy' Reboot Internationally In July 2024 [UPDATED]

Ren & Stimpy are back! Comedy Central will begin premiering its brand new and long-awaited Ren & Stimpy reboot internationally in July 2024!

Ren & Stimpy

Updated (7/13) - Comedy Central International made a last minute schedule change and has removed the Ren & Stimpy reboot from its schedules.

Bringing back animated series to the modern era has been a hot ticket item recently, with series such as RugratsAnimaniacsTiny Toon AdventuresPowerpuff Girls, and many others often brought back almost decades following their debuts. Now, it seems as though Nickelodeon's surreal duo, Ren & Stimpy, are set to receive their own animated reboot as a big update has found its way online. First premiering as one of the original Nicktoons, the series would oftentimes be as dark as it was hilarious.

The Ren & Stimpy Show first arrived on Nickelodeon in 1991, garnering five seasons and over fifty episodes to follow along with the crude protagonists. Following the series original end, the canine and feline were rebooted thanks to 2003's Ren And Stimpy: Adult Cartoon Party. This iteration offered a far more mature take on Stimpy and Ren, but failed to catch an audience that would see it live past its initial season on Spike TV.

Comedy Central announced that it had commissioned a reimagening of Nickelodeon's The Ren & Stimpy Show in August 2020, as part of the network tapping into IP across Paramount Global (then called ViacomCBS) to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South ParkThe Ren & Stimpy Show will join the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie, starring Tracee Ellis Ross.

"We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio," Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, shared in a statement back in 2020 when the news was first announced. "Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation, including South ParkBeavis and Butt-Head, and Clone High, as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations."

Original The Ren & Stimpy Show voice actor Billy West is returning for the English dub of the series.

It will not, however, involve John Kricfalusi, with the show's creator having no creative input into nor receiving any financial remuneration from the new series. Due to a leak of an episode, it has been revealed that Kricfalusi won't be mentioned in the credits.

The leak has revealed, however, that Vanessa Coffey, who helped create Nickelodeon's first three Nicktoons series - Rugrats, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and Doug - is back as an executive producer.

However, Bob Camp (who was initially planned to participate but left the project due to creative differences), is not involved.

Ren & Stimpy's return

Comedy Central will begin premiering the iteration of Ren & Stimpy across its international feeds in July.

On Comedy Central Latin America, the series will premiere Friday, July 12, at 22:50 BR, 23:00 MX, 00:00 COL/PER, 01:00 CHI y 02:00 ARG, launching with the episode segments "Renhattan / Table for Human / Clear Toilet".

This premiere date also applies to most of Comedy Central's international feeds managed by Paramount Networks EMEAA, including CIS countries, South Africa (at 22:50) and Romania (22:00).

At the moment, there is no set date for its release across the rest of the world, including in the United States.

Due to a series of leaks, we know that upcoming episodes will feature the segments titled "Screentime / All About Log" and "Aw Hell No! / Squatters".

‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ Showrunners on Character’s Enduring Popularity After 25 Years: ‘There Are Endless Possibilities’

A quarter-century later, the animated series is seen in more than 180 markets and has been translated into over 30 languages

Cultural phenomena aren’t often yellow and seldom absorbent, and almost never live in a pineapple under the sea. In those and many other ways, SpongeBob SquarePants is exceptional.

Since the Nickelodeon animated series bearing his name launched 25 years ago, the cheerful icon has developed a reach as porous as he is. SpongeBob memes are everywhere online. His face adorns countless items of apparel and collectibles. Holland even has a signature SpongeBob tulip. Yet his popularity should come as no surprise: As one of the most widely distributed shows in the history of Paramount International, the show is seen in more than 180 markets and has been translated into over 30 languages, soaking up an excess of 100 million viewers — each quarter.

As a franchise, SpongeBob has expanded to include multiple spinoff series, such as Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The Patrick Star Show. Following the theatrical films The SpongeBob Square-Pants Movie, Sponge Out of Water and Sponge on the Run, this summer Netflix will premiere the character’s fourth feature-length adventure, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. And it won’t be the last: Nickelodeon announced plans to release Search for SquarePants theatrically in 2025, whilst Netflix will bow Plankton: The Movie.

“There are endless possibilities with SpongeBob,” says Brian Robbins, co-CEO of Paramount Global, and president and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, told Variety. “The franchise continues to grow and expand our business by unveiling new series content, creating brand-new experiences, consumer products and more for kids and families.”

Originally the brainchild of the late Stephen Hillenburg, who majored in marine science and minored in art in college, SpongeBob got his shot at the big time when his creator was encouraged to pitch a show to Nickelodeon after completing work as a director on Rocko’s Modern Life. When Hillenburg’s show was greenlit, he brought with him stand-up comedian Tom Kenny, who had worked on Rocko. He’d not only provide the voice of the title character but also his pet sea snail, Gary, who meows like a cat. Along the way, Kenny was joined by Bill Fagerbakke, who voices SpongeBob’s best friend Patrick Star; Rodger Bumpass as his sarcastic neighbor Squidward; Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob and Squidward’s employer; Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel who relocated from Texas to an air-filled dome in Bikini Bottom; and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton, a struggling restauranteur.

Being cast as SpongeBob “was a huge game changer,” says Kenny, fresh from a convention appearance for the show in Jackson, Miss. “I had done stand-up, writing on shows and some on-camera acting. When the series started, it took me from being this journeyman to having a really popular, well-loved signature character that has become the cornerstone of everything else I do.”

Over his 25-year tenure in the role, Kenny has won two Emmys for outstanding performer in an animated program. His trophies join the heap of awards the show has received for outstanding children’s animated series, individual achievement in animation, storyboard, outstanding achievement in sound editing and outstanding special class animated program.

While Kenny and many of his costars have supplied the voices of their characters since the beginning of the series, dozens of A-listers have made guest appearances — or even turned up in human form — to support SpongeBob across its more than 300 episodes. Kristin Wiig voiced the character Madame Hagfish in 2011; in 2020, Keanu Reeves played the character Sage, a talking bush, in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run; and in addition to lending his 1995 song “No Control” to the The SpongeBob Musical, David Bowie joined the show’s ensemble to play Lord Royal Highness in the 2007 episode “Atlantis SquarePantis.”

Despite the star wattage of many guest performers, SpongeBob’s stewards studiously try to avoid being on trend or pursuing ideas that might date the show. “Everything since the dawn of Bikini Bottom is made of a bunch of old junk that just fell to the bottom of the ocean,” says co-showrunner and executive producer Marc Ceccarelli. “Because of this, Bikini Bottom was supposed to be isolated, so we try to avoid surface world pop culture references because nobody down there would know, say, the popular musician of each successive generation.”

“We’ve been making the show for 25 years — and that’s several generations of kids,” he observes. “But past episodes are still just as funny, because they’re not weighted down by a bunch of secret knowledge that each generation has.”

In fact, core to SpongeBob’s appeal is the kind of kooky, slapstick-oriented humor you’d find in a fourth-grade class but has been successfully translated across multiple generations and demographics. “The Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton, all of those guys started on vaudeville and then transferred that to film,” says Ceccarelli’s co-showrunner and co-executive producer Vincent Waller. “So, we study all those guys and try to soak up what they’re doing, how they sell an emotion to the audience, and then that gets translated into animation.”

“SpongeBob, the way they built him, he just wants to be everybody’s friend,” Waller says. “And then he has all these other characters around him who are just chock full of foibles.”

Ceccarelli indicates that one of the keys to the show’s success as a storytelling platform is its philosophical focus on the mechanics of classic comedy, and of course animation. “Old cartoons we watch did a lot more referential humor,” he observes. “When I was watching old Bugs Bunny cartoons and they would start talking about ration cards, I didn’t understand that as a kid. The majority of the humor in those cartoons comes from physical humor and the characters themselves. We’ve focused on those things.”

Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito suggests that SpongeBob’s exuberant, childlike worldview is what resonates most with the series’ legion of superfans. “Anytime you bring up SpongeBob with anyone, the reaction is an incredible smile,” says Naito. “It’s that love, that connection, that joy, that people want to be part of.”

“At the heart of the franchise is a great character that the audience loves and people want to see more of,” she adds. “The combination of this creativity with this soulful character is one of the reasons why SpongeBob remains so loved.”

After 15 seasons, multiple spinoffs and more than half a billion dollars of box office revenue, there are likely myriad reasons to explain why SpongeBob has not only endured but become a cultural institution. Citing the many people who approach him at events to say how SpongeBob’s voice has become a kind of aural comfort food to them, Kenny suggests it’s the consistency — and simplicity — of the character that has drawn audiences in for now a quarter of a century. “The characters never change, and that’s key,” he says. “You have to keep the characters who they are because that’s what brings people back to the show.”

“No one is looking for SpongeBob to have a kind of character arc that you’d see in Better Call Saul.”

Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation’s Ramsey Naito Explains Why Animation Is the Hot Medium Right Now

As Variety's inaugural Executive Impact recipient, Ramsey Naito continues to transform the animation landscape.

Ramsey Naito
Ramsey Naito / Beth Coller

Following a debut work-in-progress screening of Paramount Animation’s Transformers One last month during the Annecy Intl. Animation Festival, a capacity crowd at the 1,000-seat Bonlieu main theater erupted with a lengthy standing ovation for the movie and its Oscar-winning director, Josh Cooley.

It was a great moment for the studio and filmmakers, and underscored the direction of Ramsey Naito, president of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, who will receive Variety’s inaugural Executive Impact in Animation award.

“I was so proud of Josh and so proud of the filmmakers,” Naito told Variety of the response. “People really felt like it was a great film and a great story that appealed to them even though they weren’t super fans of Transformers, which was a dream come true. We went into this wanting to appeal to everybody.”

Naito’s comes from an artistic background, having studied at CalArts. She started her career at Nickelodeon and returned in 2018 before she was upped to her current role in September 2021. Since then, Naito has been steering the studios’ animation offerings with a slate of originals and franchise titles, while maintaining a culture that “embraces the artists and embraces individuality behind the camera” — an ethos that’s deeply important to her.

Brian Robbins, co-CEO of Paramount Global and president-CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, says, “I couldn’t think of a more talented executive to lead our animation business into the future.”

Naito explains that the goal is to create stories and characters for a wide audience “that have a real reliability, that feel broad and diverse.” She adds, “We want to make movies that have soul, that add to culture, that say something to today.”

Opening Sept. 20 and made in collaboration with Hasbro Entertainment, Transformers One is a stylized origin story set on the planet Cybertron (featuring animation by Industrial Light & Magic) that mixes action with the character-centric story of how a young Optimus Prime, voiced by Chris Hemsworth, and young Megatron, voiced by Brian Tyree Henry, go from best friends to mortal enemies.

It will be followed by a string of originals in development, including the Bad Bunny and Will Ferrell-produced Dropz, which Naito describes as “our E.T., about real kids in a super extraordinary situation.” Among the studio’s franchise titles, The Smurfs Movie, directed by Puss in Boots helmer Chris Miller, comes to theaters in early 2025 with a voice cast led by James Corden and Rihanna; the latter will provide the voice of Smurfette in addition to writing, producing and performing original songs.

Meanwhile, recent releases Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem — with a sequel currently being developed by Jeff Rowe and Seth Rogen — and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie helped the two franchises earn a combined $2.5 billion in 2023, according to the company.

This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the beloved Stephen Hillenburg-created SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, which revolves around the eponymous yellow sea sponge and his friends at Bikini Bottom. Starting in July, Nickelodeon will mark the milestone with anniversary-themed episodes and related content. “We want to reach the audience to participate in the celebration,” Naito says, promising that the studio will “synergize our entire ecosystem” leading up to a 2025 return to theaters with The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.

As the entertainment landscape changes, Naito maintains a keen eye on the challenges faced by animated projects. “Our audience has so many options, so many choices to make. The challenge of getting audience members into the theater is harder than ever,” she notes. “And in series, kids TV, there is a similar dialogue.”

But at a time when animation is becoming more diverse and more global, she also sees opportunities. “I think the state of animation is in a really great place,” she says. “There’s never been a better time to be a creator and to make things and put them out there in the world.”

LOS ANGELES, July 12, 2024 - NickWatch, the smartwatch with renowned safety features for children and made by Watchinu under license agreement with Nickelodeon, is making its way to the US this summer. After gaining wide popularity across the UK last August and receiving the Red Dot Design Award for Product Design earlier this year, the device will be available nationally on Walmart.com beginning this Saturday, July 13 and in Walmart stores in October. From the team at Watchinu, the watch makes its official American debut in a 30-second ad slot that will air during the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2024 this Saturday.

Designed for kids ages 5-10 and retailing at $119 USD, the NickWatch offers an array of content and features inspired by Nickelodeon's iconic characters, including motion-based games, experiences and role-play activities. Users can run through the sewer tunnels with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, learn Morse code with Lincoln Loud and practice balance with SpongeBob SquarePants.

The NickWatch also empowers independence in children without compromising safety. The subscription-based companion NickWatch app for parents allows them to safeguard children's budding freedom with location tracking and communication tools. You can also create a geo-fence around frequented locations like school or a friend's house and receive a notification when the child has left the area. Caregivers can message and call the user account on the watch, mute the device during school hours and choose who communicates with their child. Internet and regular social media platforms cannot be accessed through the watch. A complete list of safety features can be found HERE.

The NickWatch will be available on Walmart.com beginning Saturday, July 13. New games will be released every few months, along with new stickers and watch face designs, sound effects, musical instruments, voice filters and more.

How To Survive Your Clubbing Era | Ep. 74 | Ned's Declassified Podcast Survival Guide

How To Survive Your Clubbing Era | Ep. 74 | Ned's Declassified Podcast Survival Guide

This week on the pod the gang are recapping “Video Projects” and talking all things clubs - dancing clubs, golf clubs, club sandwiches, you name it! They discuss Lindsey’s club era and how she was a sweet baby angel, and how Devon embraced his nakedness while at Burning Man. The crew talks about their fake ID eras and if they think Daniel and Devon would have joined fraternities. Finally, they also exit their goblin mode to have a moment of chaotic tranquility to discuss their viewpoints on the afterlife.

Why did Lindsey end up on TMZ? Are clubs actually just cults?? And why did Daniel nearly squeeze his eyelids inside out in this episode???
