"The concept for Wonder Pets: In the City sprung from the love and nostalgia for the original series," Jennifer Oxley, the show's developer and executive producer told Parents. "We wanted to create something that honored the spirit of the original but with a new trio of classroom pets, a jazzy new city location, and deeper storytelling with diverse and inclusive themes –with takeaway messages of teamwork, compassion, empathy, kindness, and the importance of helping others."

The animated series will be coming to a screen near you on Friday, December 13, 2024, on Apple TV+. It will include thirteen 22-minute episodes with two 11-minute stories available at launch. It follows the adventures of Izzy, Tate, and Zuri, sparking curiosity along the way.

The three friends live in a kindergarten classroom in New York City. But once they are called into action, their adventures are global. The trio will hop in their "Jetcar" (different than a "Flyboat" for the fans of the original) to help rescue animals. Every mission they go on is filled with music and singing.

"When dreaming up what our new spin-off could be I thought, what if our original Wonder Pets weren’t alone? What if there was a vast network of singing animal-saving teamwork-loving classroom pets all around the world? And for this spin-off, what if we get to meet a whole new team of Wonder Pets who live in a brand-new city location?" Oxley tells Parents.

Like the original Wonder Pets! series, Wonder Pets: In the City focuses on teamwork as our little heroes find they have to work together to help save the day.

"Alone these three classroom pets have no real superpowers, but when they come together and work as a team there’s nothing they can’t do," Oxley says.

How the New Spinoff Differs From the Original

For fans wondering whether Wonder Pets: In the City will have the same vibe as the original that we knew and loved, there's good news. The new series is not only produced by Nickelodeon Animation but the music is composed in part by Bobby Lopez. If you don't know, Lopez was involved with the original Wonder Pets! series. He's also known for composing a little movie known as Frozen (and Frozen 2) along with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

"Just like the original series, we collaborated with some amazingly talented award-winning composers. We also record a live orchestra! It never gets old seeing our animation on screen accompanied by live musicians," Oxley says.

"The phone... the phone is ringing..."

Even though the original series was set in a preschool classroom and the new one is focused on kindergarten, both have the same premise. Once the students leave for the day, the phone rings, and the classroom pets are ready to take the call.

The classroom pets are a bit different though. While both series feature a guinea pig, the spinoff also includes a bunny and a snake instead of a turtle and a duck.

"Our new series pushes the boundaries of the 'Photo Puppetry' animation technique created for the original. Real animals are photographed, designed in Photoshop, and then rigged and animated in After Effects. Our collaboration with Apple TV+ has enabled us to expand the visual style and storytelling techniques, resulting in richer animation and more dynamic environments," Oxcley explains.

The new series' music, humor, fun, and adventure are sure to keep your little ones entertained.
