Nickelodeon UK Invites Viewers to 'Play Like a Sponge' In New Short-Form Series Produced In Partnership With ParalympicsGB

Nickelodeon UK & Ireland is inviting viewers to Play Like a Sponge this summer in a brand-new short-form series in which SpongeBob has assembled a team of kids to try a selection of Paralympic sports and meet real life Paralympic legends.

Play Like a Sponge

Produced in partnership with ParalympicsGB, Play Like a Sponge will inspire kids to find their inner SpongeBob SquarePants as the Nickelodeon icon cheers them on in their quest to learn about and sample new sports with paralympic athletes ahead of the upcoming Paralympic games in Paris this August.

The series is directed by Max Kinder, Erik Gerstenmaier and Karoline Bauer.

Play Like a Sponge will make its debut on Channel 5's Milkshake!, with the first four episodes airing across the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July 2024, at 8:50am and 8:55am, respectively, both days on the programming block.

Following its Channel 5 premiere, Nickelodeon UK & Ireland will begin to air the series starting Monday 15th July 2024, with episodes airing daily at 4:30pm followed by regular encores. Nickelodeon will air the first four episodes, followed by brand new episodes.


The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games takes place between Wednesday 28th August 2024 – Sunday 8th September 2024. UK coverage of the games airs on Channel 4.

Play Like a Sponge Episode Guide:

Wheelchair Basketball: Harmonie and Owen meet Paralympic legend Amy Conroy who shows them the fast paced world of Wheelchair Basketball. (S1, ep 1)

Taekwondo: Kieran and Millie kick off their Play Like a Sponge adventure by meeting Taekwondo gold medallist Joe Lane and getting a taste for the martial art. (S1, ep 2)

Cycling: Sarah Storey, the most decorated Paralympian of all time, gets Connie and Millie in the saddle to learn all about Para-Cycling. (S1, ep 3)

Boccia: Harmonie and Millie meet the 2022 Boccia world champion, Claire Taggart, for a training match and challenge of the uniquely Paralympic sport. (S1, ep 4)

Judo: Connie and Harmonie meet their sensei for the day, Judo expert Evan Molloy, and get to grips with the martial art. (S1, ep 5)

Rowing: Owen and Connie head to the boating lake to meet Paralympic gold medalist Lauren Rowles and see what it takes to be a professional rower. (S1, ep 6)

Wheelchair Rugby: Connie and Owen meet Paralympic Gold Medalist Stuart Robinson to try out the hard hitting sport of Wheelchair Rugby. (S1, ep 7)

Wheelchair Fencing: Owen and Millie go head to head with Paralympic medalist Oliver Lam-Watson and learn everything there is to know about Wheelchair Fencing. (S1, ep 8)

Archery: Harmonie and Kieran take aim at one of the oldest sports in the world and get an Archery masterclass from world champion and Paralympic medalist Jodie Grinham. (S1, ep 9)

Swimming: Kieran and Harmonie dive into the world of Para-Swimming and get an exclusive training session with world champion and Paralympic medalist Grace Harvey. (S1, ep 10)

Bonus Episode: SpongeBob has assembled a team of kids to try a selection of Paralympic sports and meet real life Paralympic legends.
