Paramount and Comcast Xfinity Ink Major Carriage Deal, Averting Blackout of CBS, Nickelodeon

Paramount Global and Comcast Xfinity have cut a new carriage deal, averting a potential New Year’s Day blackout that would have included the CBS network and other channels owned by the company.

Paramount Mountain

The deal includes continued carriage of Paramount’s portfolio of channels and apps across the Xfinity platforms. Paramount owns Nickelodeon, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, BET and Paramount Network, among other offerings.

A Paramount spokesperson confirmed the new carriage agreement to news outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.

The deal comes before the expiration of the current pact at the end of the year. In January 2022, Paramount (then known as ViacomCBS) and Comcast announced a “multi-year” carriage renewal.

Talks proceeded quietly in recent days, without any of the consumer-facing warnings about looming deadlines that often accompany carriage negotiations. A blackout would have been ill-timed for both parties, given that Paramount carries the NFL and other marquee programming.

The agreement is significant as some New Year’s Eve NFL games and New Year’s Day college football games could have been impacted had the companies not reached a deal. The NFL playoffs also start early next month, with CBS holding some big games.

The company’s flagship broadcast network, CBS, is also slated to broadcast the Super Bowl in February, with cable sibling Nickelodeon providing an alternate telecast.

Comcast is one of the two largest cable companies in the U.S. through its Xfinity service (Charter Spectrum is the other) making the deal a pivotal one for Paramount. Comcast has more than 14 million video subscribers.

The new agreement provides for continued carriage of Paramount’s entertainment, news and sports channels and apps on Comcast’s Xfinity TV and internet platforms. It is understood that the deal skirts the kind of outcome some industry observers had predicted, with the loss of linear carriage for some of Paramount’s two-dozen-plus channels. When Disney reached terms with Charter Communications last September, the pact included gains for streaming services like Disney+ but also the loss of carriage for established networks like Freeform and FXX. As they contend with subscriber erosion due to cord-cutting, programmers are looking to avoid near-term shocks like having channels outright dropped as the entire industry continues to shift toward streaming.

As streaming takes over from traditional linear TV, some cable companies are beginning to reimagine their deals. Charter and its Spectrum service were in an extended carriage dispute with Disney earlier this year, forcing ESPN off the lineup during the U.S. Open. The two sides eventually cut a deal before the NFL season, though it included big changes like the elimination of some major channels and adding Disney+ to the bundle offering.

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish has focused on mending fences with distributors since taking the top job at Viacom in 2015, a process that has grown more complex since the boom in direct-to-consumer streaming. The distribution effort is playing out against a larger dealmaking backdrop for Paramount. The company and its controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone’s National Amusements, have recently entertained offers for some or all of its assets as it continues to face a host of challenges like the soft advertising climate, streaming costs, cord-cutting and pressure on theatrical moviegoing. Any potential buyer of the company will want to have carriage deals in place so they can develop a strategy for its assets.

Paramount is nearing another distribution crossroads in 2024 as its current deal with Charter winds to a close. The parties signed a multi-year deal in mid-2021, with streaming a key component. Charter’s management team has said it will use the latest Disney deal as a template for its future distribution agreements.

About Bossy Bear:

From husband and wife team David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim (UglyDolls), and based on the popular book series by Horvath, the series (30 episodes) follows Bossy Bear, an overly-enthusiastic extrovert, and Turtle, a thoughtful introvert--unlikely besties who make the perfect team for navigating silly childhood adventures in their Koreatown-inspired city of Pleasantburg.

The first season of Bossy Bear will feature real-life couple Lance Bass and Michael Turchin in recurring guest voice roles as the parents to Ginger (Beahlen Deacon), Bossy Bear’s older sister Bissy’s bestie aka her “squirrelfriend.”  Bass and Turchin voice Tyler, a laid-back owl, and Greg, an intense chipmunk, respectively, who run a vegetarian and kosher food truck called Latke Love.

Rounding out the voice cast for Bossy Bear are series regulars: Jayden Ham (Sea of Lights, Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge) as Bossy, an extroverted bear whose big imagination and endless enthusiasm lands him in hilarious situations; Jaba Keh (Sesame Street) as Turtle, Bossy’s patient, pure-hearted and empathetic best friend; Claudia Choi (Her, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as Bossy’s Mom, the funny and athletic mother who has eyes in the back of her head and Gran-Gran, Turtle’s wise, loving grandmother who knows how to have a good time; and Shaun Baer (Chicago PD) as Bossy’s Dad, the store manager of an electronics shop who has a PhD in Dad jokes; and Viva Lee (Polaris, Deadly Class) as Bissy, Bossy’s older sister who thinks she knows everything about being an adult and can play an okay keytar.

David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim are the creative minds behind the UglyDolls franchise. Horvath also penned the Bossy Bear book series (Hyperion), inspired by a blend of Korean and U.S. pop culture.

Bossy Bear is executive produced by: Imagine Entertainment Executive Chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard; Imagine Kids+Family’s Elly Kramer Posner; Stephanie Sperber; David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim; Bob Mittenthal (It’s Pony, The Loud House) for Nickelodeon Animation; and Ashley Postlewaite (Tom and Jerry in New York, The Mr. Men Show) for Renegade Animation. Jeff D’Elia (Captain Underpants, Doug Unplugs, Rugrats) serves as story editor and Chil Kong is consulting producer.

Bossy Bear marks Nickelodeon’s third project with Imagine Kids+Family, following live-action adventure series The Astronauts and The Tiny Chef Show, starring the titular social media sensation and herbivore.

Bossy Bear made its debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on March 6 where it scored Nickelodeon its biggest preschool launch since the 2019 debut of Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. The debut episode posted strong double-digit year-over-year gains with Kids 2-5 (1.1/71K), up 83%.

Production of Bossy Bear for Nickelodeon Animation is overseen by Eryk Casemiro, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation, Global Series Content. Max Goodman serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series. Paramount Consumer Products will lead consumer products licensing for the Bossy Bear property worldwide in partnership with Imagine Kids+Family.

Whether that’s comedy, reality, new concepts, fan favourites or existing shows, we give younger audiences entertainment to escape the everyday. And the results prove it with 10 having more of the top entertainment programs in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s than our competitors.

“10 delivers the LOLs with comedy shows like Thank God You’re Here, Have You Been Paying Attention?, Gogglebox, The Cheap Seats and Taskmaster. We dish up superfans with MasterChef Australia and Australian Survivor. We take families to the jungle with I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! or let them settle into the couch with Gogglebox.

“10 Play has had its biggest year ever, up 25% on 2022, and is Australia’s fastest growing BVOD with over 7 million members and rising. We’ve also seen younger audiences attracted to the mountain of content on 10 Play FAST channels – 75% of FAST viewers are 18 to 54 years old, compared to a lesser average of 62% for other commercial platforms.

“And we’re tapping into this digital audience with market-leading digital ad products such as dynamic video capabilities delivering personalisation at scale, interactive and immersive ad experiences, and proof of performance solutions meeting the market’s need to deliver results-driven campaigns.

“We’re offering the market unparalleled Total TV advertising opportunities as our premium, brand-safe content across linear and BVOD continues to connect with younger, more engaged viewers than our competitors.
