There is no better time than Friday the 13th to announce that Abrams and IDW are set to debut new books and comics, respectively, tied to Mattel’s beloved Monster High franchise.
Mattel says the publishing program is being brought back after years of demand from the fan base. “Even when Monster High was on hiatus, we were hearing from fans constantly who, simply put, wanted more Monster High,” said Ryan Ferguson, Mattel’s global head of publishing. “As the desire for more publishing content that expands the Monster High universe has been a common request, we’re particularly excited about today’s news.”
“We’re all huge fans of anything spooky, and several of us read and loved the books when they came out a decade or so ago,” said Anne Heltzel, editorial director, entertainment publishing and content development for Abrams Children’s Books. “The Monster High brand has a rabid fan base made up of both kids who are new to the series and older readers who are nostalgic for those original ghouls. To be able to delve into this rich world and tell all-new stories perfectly tailored to both groups has been a dream.”
The publishing program commences with a middle grade series, Monster High School Spirits, with the first title, A Fright to Remember, launching this Halloween and new stories to follow annually. This series features self-contained original stories inspired by the animated show on Nickelodeon, which features a new generation of characters. “The books will target newly minted fans as well as older fans who want to pass on their passion for the brand to the young people in their lives,” Heltzel said.
In spring 2024, the publisher will release a new young adult novel, Once Bitten, Twice Dead. The book is by Tiffany Schmidt, author of nine YA novels including the Bookish Boyfriends series. The book, with a very different cover illustration style from the middle-grade series, continues and expands on the narratives of the original characters and stars fan-favorite character Draculaura. The novel is positioned as a standalone, but the conclusion leaves room for a sequel.
Abrams also has a Monster High graphic novel in the works.
IDW, meanwhile, will peg its introduction of the brand to Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) on May 4, 2024. The company will offer a gratis 32-page comic including an exclusive new Monster High story and an extended preview of its new comic book series based on the franchise, Monster High: New Scaremester. The monthly series will begin with 10 books.
Monster High was first introduced in 2010. Core to the franchise were books penned by Gitty Daneshvari and Lisi Harrison and published by Little, Brown. There were also dolls and online content from Mattel, followed by other entertainment and licensed products. The franchise wound down in 2018 when Mattel retired the doll line.
In early 2021, Mattel announced that it was relaunching and reimagining the franchise. After success with a collectible line called Monster High Skullector Dolls, released through the Mattel Creations platform, Mattel introduced a new range of dolls, clothes, and accessories in May 2022 that reflect more diversity in body types, ethnicities, and gender expression than the first time around. A live-action movie premiered in October of that year, and a sequel debuted this past October 5 on Paramount+. In addition, an animated TV series was introduced in September 2022 on Nickelodeon, with a second season starting this fall.
Other components of the program include a stage show, Monster High Live, which arrived last month; product collaborations, which include a just-released pairing with fashion label Off White; digital gaming; and a social impact platform, Monster High Project Belonging.
“These programs include core characters and themes from the original Monster High but have also greatly expanded the Monster High universe for today’s audiences, including all new toys, characters, and storylines, all still rooted in the values of inclusivity and self-expression,” Ferguson said.
Focusing on the lives of the children of famous monsters, including Clawdeen, a half-human and biracial werewolf; Frankie Stein, who is non-binary and uses a prosthetic leg; and Draculaura, a curvy vampire who is adopted, among others, Monster High is meant to encourage a more accepting world where everyone can be proud to be their authentic self. This is a message the company believes will resonate perhaps even more today than in the 2010s.

Ramsey Naito
President of Animation, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation
Ramsey Naito is President of Animation for Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation.
As President of Animation for Paramount Animation, a role which she assumed in September 2021, Naito oversees all of the animation group’s operations from development through theatrical release. Naito previously served as Executive Vice President of Paramount Animation in 2018 before assuming her role as Executive Vice President of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon Animation.
At Nickelodeon, Naito oversees animation content across all formats and platforms--spanning linear, digital, TV movies, theatrical motion pictures and SVOD. She has been a driving force at the network bringing new projects, top talent and key partnerships to Nickelodeon Animation, to further bolster its content pipeline across preschool, kids, theatrical and its studio business. Since joining the network in 2018, Naito has since overseen a renaissance at the studio of animation content and production in scale and creativity. Naito has transformed Nickelodeon’s Animation pipeline from 6 projects to over 70 series and movies, while emerging to launch hits on Paramount+, which have helped build the platform to the fastest growing streaming service in the US.
At Paramount Animation, Naito’s oversight includes developing and ushering upcoming Paramount film titles including some of the studio’s key franchises such as: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, produced in partnership with award-winning Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver and directed by Jeff Rowe, PAW Patrol: The Movie and its sequel PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (September 29, 2023), in partnership with Spin Master Entertainment and directed by Cal Brunker; Untitled Transformers Animation as well as The Tiger’s Apprentice (set for release in 2024), starring Henry Golding and directed by Raman Hui and co-directed by Paul Watling & YongDuk Jhun; Untitled Smurfs Animated Musical and an Untitled Avatar Animation film focusing on Aang avatar (first of three Avatar animated theatricals).
To continue growing Nickelodeon’s animation business beyond linear, in 2019, Naito oversaw the network’s multi-year output deal with Netflix to produce original animated feature films and television series, based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new IP for kids and families globally. This deal marked an expansion of the existing relationship between the companies, which has already brought several popular titles to Netflix, including movies based on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Loud House, and animated specials Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.
Building an inclusive and diverse culture at the animation studio and developing emerging and homegrown talent has been a strong point in Naito’s mission throughout her time at Nickelodeon. Naito has brought in more than 1400 new employees across dozens of Nickelodeon and Paramount animation productions, and since employees began working remotely in March in 2020, over hundreds of new positions have been filled with studio productions operating virtually at 100%. Nickelodeon currently has over 70 animated shows in production across series, its studio business and movies. Under Naito’s leadership, Nickelodeon also held its first-ever virtual job fair this year, garnering nearly 6000 attendees

PROGRAMMED BY HUMANS, PLUTO TV IS DELIVERING TV THE WAY IT SHOULD BE
Brand Campaign Highlights Best-In-Class Programming and Human Curators
Latest Evolution of Pluto TV Brings A New Channel Lineup and Categories to Optimize and Ease Navigation, Viewing and Discovery of Content Across the Platform
OCTOBER 2, 2023 Los Angeles, CA - As a pioneer of FAST, Pluto TV’s signature style of curation, with hundreds of channels and categories programmed daily, is a known catalyst that sparked acceleration and fandom around free, ad-supported streaming television. With nearly a decade of experience, a dedicated and proprietary team of over 50 curators who apply passion and expertise alongside audience behavior and insights with advanced technologies to deliver the best entertainment experience for all audiences.
Beginning today, Pluto TV is rolling out a new brand campaign, building on the popular Stream Now Pay Never series, that puts a spotlight on the heart and humanity behind the award-winning service. Two new themes are being introduced to the market - Programmed By Humans and TV The Way It Should Be. This new positioning will take center stage in a multifaceted campaign spotlighting the human-powered innovation behind Pluto TV that is building upon the best parts of television and adapting it for the future of streaming television.
Programmed by Humans looks to shine a light on Pluto TV’s best-in-class programming and the programmers who curate the channels. The human element of Pluto TV is a centerpiece connecting programming with viewers in a way that is unparalleled to any other FAST service. Programmed by Humans will air with three unique commercial spots, each paying heed to a Pluto TV fandom; sci-fi, romantic comedy and true crime. Each spot speaks to the distinctive quality of the subgenre where fictionalized expert curators appear in living rooms to resolve the paradox of choice and underscore the free, easy-to-use, “something for everyone” value proposition.
“When developing this campaign, we set out to connect with audiences in a meaningful way that captures the essence of Pluto TV and how transformative it has been to the world of television,” states Val Kaplan, Global SVP, Head of Consumer Marketing, Pluto TV. “Our creative focus was to spotlight what sets Pluto TV apart in the increasingly competitive streaming market– the human element of curation that is intrinsic to the very human experience of watching television.”
The Programmed By Humans campaign debuts today and will run through the remainder of the year. The spots take flight across global linear, CTV, digital, out-of-home, streaming audio, terrestrial radio and social platforms. Tapping into the power of the Paramount Global ecosystem, the campaign will be cross-promoted across the company’s marquee lineup of linear, streaming and digital properties.
Additionally, an evergreen campaign, TV the Way It Should Be, will launch out-of-home creative at major sports arenas, airports and ferries, shopping venues, as well as NYC’s Times Square, home to Paramount Global, while the creative spots will air during select NFL and NBA games.

In concert with the brand campaign, Pluto TV is introducing the first installment of a recategorization that will take place between now and early 2024. The first of the new categories include DRAMA, SCI-FI, and TRUE CRIME with additional categories in development. Inspired by downstream viewing habits, programmers created these categories based on patterns that emerged in the form of a visual roadmap that offered a deeper understanding of how users are navigating the service.
“With the growth of the platform there are opportunities to better align the categories on our guide to help our users find the content they want to watch faster,” states Scott Reich, SVP Programming, Pluto TV. “These changes are based on long-term user data trends and preparing for future content expansions as we continue to entertain the planet and drive viewing hours to new heights.”
Curated by the Pluto TV programmers and inspired by fandoms, these new categories seek to further enhance the user experience through the consolidation of content for easier and smoother discoverability.
