Paramount+ continues to thin its roster of scripted originals.
The Paramount Global-backed service has canceled its Fatal Attraction reboot as well as its Kiefer Sutherland-led drama Rabbit Hole. Both shows, which ran for one season each, will continue to remain on the platform rather than being pulled from the service completely.
“Fatal Attraction and Rabbit Hole will not be returning for second seasons on Paramount+. We want to thank both series’ entire creative teams, crews and the fantastic casts for their dedication to bringing these series to life. Both Fatal Attraction and Rabbit Hole will continue to be available on Paramount+ for audiences to discover,” a Paramount+ spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
Fatal Attraction, a reboot of the Glenn Close and Michael Douglas psychosexual thriller, starred Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson and was produced in-house by Paramount Television Studios. The series, from showrunner Alexandra Cunningham (Dirty John) did not garner favorable reviews despite its star power. It has a 37 percent rating among critics and 71 percent score from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Rabbit Hole, meanwhile, was ordered straight to series in mid-2021 and was also produced in-house by CBS Studios. The series marked Sutherland’s return to television after ABC-turned-Netflix drama Designated Survivor and hailed from This Is Us duo John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. The show marked a reunion at the time for Sutherland and former Paramount Global exec David Nevins, who previously developed 24. Nevins exited the company last year after more than a decade.
Rabbit Hole garnered more favorable reviews, with a 76 percent and 86 percent score among critics and viewers, respectively. (Paramount+, like other streamers, does not release traditional viewership data.)
Fatal Attraction, which Cunningham was hoping to continue with a second season, and Rabbit Hole become the latest cancellations to come at Paramount+ and join the recently axed iCarly sequel, Star Trek: Prodigy (which found a new home at Netflix), Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, The Game and the unscripted show Queen of the Universe. The latter four shows, in addition to being canceled, were also removed from Paramount+ as the streamer, like others, took advantage of a tax write-off, although Star Trek: Prodigy season one will be made available on Netflix as part of the deal, which will also see the unreleased second season arrive next year. Also removed from the platform was Inside Amy Schumer, Tell Me a Story and scores of originals and library shows from Nickelodeon.
Amid an uncertain economy, streamers and networks alike have been reviewing their slates of pricey scripted originals as their parent companies look to rightsize their rosters in an effort to be more fiscally responsible. The moves have largely brought an end to the so-called Peak TV wave and the free spending that came with it.
