Update (12/10) - Twisted Metal season two has been confirmed!
(New York – July 20, 2023) – In a deal with Sony Pictures Television (SPT), Paramount+ has acquired the much buzzed about, all-new action-comedy series TWISTED METAL in Canada. The live-action adaptation of the PlayStation classic game series premieres in Canada exclusively on Paramount+ with all 10 episodes dropping August 10. Paramount+ will be launching this series in other international territories to be announced at a later date.
The series is from SPT, based on an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (Deadpool & Zombieland) and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai).
TWISTED METAL is about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named Sweet Tooth who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.
“TWISTED METAL delivers high-octane blockbuster summer movie energy episode after episode,” said Doug Craig, SVP of Content Strategy and Acquisitions at Paramount+. “From top to bottom, this series is a wild ride that delivers with talent and story that showcases the premium content Paramount+ viewers can expect from the service.”
“TWISTED METAL is unlike anything in the market today,” said Flory Bramnick, EVP, Distribution and Jason Spivak, EVP, Distribution, North America, Sony Pictures Television. “It fuses heart and humor with nostalgia of the early 2000s in an imaginative way that will be distinctly relatable for global audiences. We look forward to working with our partners at Paramount+ to bring this escapist comedy to Canadians next month, and later this year to additional territories.”
The stellar cast stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier) as John Doe, a smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives; Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine Nine and Encanto) stars as Quiet; Joe Seanoa (AEW) as Sweet Tooth, voiced by Canadian Will Arnett (Arrested Development, Murderville, and The Lego Movie) and Thomas Haden Church (Sideways, Divorce, and Spider-Man: No Way Home). Series guest stars include Canadian Neve Campbell (Scream), Richard Cabral (Mayans M.C.), Mike Mitchell (Love and The Tomorrow War), Tahj Vaughans (The Purge), and Lou Beatty Jr. (Finding Normal).
Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the live-action comedy from Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
