A new report suggests that Netflix has welcomed three new actors to play Jet's Freedom Fighters in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
Three new names have surfaced from the cast of Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, all of them attached to roles within Jet's band of freedom fighters.
According to Knight Edge Media, actors Taylor Lam Wright, Wes Valarao and Nathaniel Kong have been enlisted for the highly-anticipated Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. They are set to portray the respective roles of The Duke, Smellerbee and Longshot, who, in the original series, are known as members of the Freedom Fighters. The young trio join previously confirmed cast member Sebastian Amoruso, who will be playing Jet, the cunning leader of the Freedom Fighters.
In the original series, The Freedom Fighters are a group of young refugees from the Earth Kingdom who seek to take their revenge against the Fire Nation. The group was introduced in Book 1: Water, when they crossed paths with Team Avatar after Aang, Katara and Sokka accidentally stumbled into a Fire Nation camp. The two groups were initially friendly with each other, with Katara even developing a romantic interest in Jet. However, their brief teamwork ended in betrayal, when Team Avatar discovered their plans to destroy a Fire Nation colony. The team appeared in the season that followed, this time in Ba Sing Se.
What to Expect From Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has been in development since 2018, with original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko previously attached to serve as showrunners. However, they exited the project early on due to creative differences and were eventually replaced by Albert Kim. Despite leaving the Netflix series, DiMartino and Konietzko are still actively involved in the world of Avatar as they’re currently developing multiple animated shows and movies for Nickelodeon under Avatar Studios.
The live-action cast will be led by Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, and Paul Sun-hyung Lee as Iroh. Like the original series, Season 1 is expected to cover Aang’s journey to find a waterbending teacher, while being relentlessly pursued by the Fire Nation. Along the way, the team will get to meet a lot of interesting people including Maria Zhang as Kyoshi Warrior Suki and Utkarsh Ambudkar as the eccentric King Bumi.
Production on Season 1 of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender has wrapped. At the time of writing, Netflix has not yet announced its official release date.
