First Look of Transformers: EarthSpark Revealed During Exclusive Panel Featuring Voice Cast and Creative Team Members

BURBANK, Calif., July 22, 2022 -- Nickelodeon, Paramount+ and Entertainment One (eOne) today announced the voice actors breathing new life into original and franchise favorite characters in the upcoming Paramount+ original animated series Transformers: EarthSpark. The all-new animated series (26 episodes) introduces a new generation of Transformers robots--the first Transformers robots to be born on Earth--and together with the human family who welcomes them in and cares for them, they'll redefine what it means to be a family. Transformers: EarthSpark is set to debut exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. in November, and on Paramount+ and select Nickelodeon channels internationally. The new series joins the globally recognized Transformers powerhouse franchise.
The news was revealed during an exclusive panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2022 featuring voice cast members Danny Pudi (Bumblebee), Kathreen Khavari (Twitch), Zeno Robinson (Thrash), and co-executive producer Dale Malinowski and executive producer Ant Ward. Mike Cecchini (Editor-in-Chief, Den of Geek) moderated the panel, which also revealed a first look at the series.
The new voice cast and their Transformers: EarthSpark characters are:
Sydney Mikayla (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts) as "Robby Malto," a smart 13-year-old boy with an abundance of moxie and charisma. Robby is frustrated by his family's recent move to a small town until he discovers Transformers bots and is now living the ultimate dream.
Zion Broadnax (Day Shift) as "Morgan 'Mo' Malto," Robby's 9-year-old younger sister. Though she's emotionally mature for her age, she's able to look at everything with a wide-eyed sense of optimism and hope. For her, family comes first no matter who you are or where you're from.
Benny Latham as "Dot Malto," the mother to Robby and Mo, surrogate mother to the Malto-bots, and wife to Alex. She's a loving mother and ex-soldier, so she can flip that switch when she's pushed.
Jon Jon Briones (Ratched) as "Alex Malto," the father to Robby and Mo, surrogate father to the Malto-bots, and husband to Dot. He's a college professor with a Ph.D. in Transformers History who loves sharing his Filipino heritage and wealth of Transformers knowledge with his human and bot kids. He can also rattle off dad jokes like a pro.
Kathreen Khavari (Dead End: Paranormal Park) as "Twitch Malto," an Earth-born Terran born out of primordial sludge in the cave waters of Witwicky, Pennsylvania, like her brother Thrash. She's a keen observer of everything around her.
Zeno Robinson (Big City Greens) as "Thrash Malto," an Earth-born male Terran and a cheeky wild child. Like his sister, Twitch, he was born out of primordial sludge in the caves of Witwicky, Pennsylvania. He's a bringer of fun and good times with a happy-go-lucky attitude.
Danny Pudi (Community) as "Bumblebee," a fun-loving veteran Autobot who serves as a mentor to the Terrans as they learn what it takes to be Transformers robots. Bumblebee has a lot to learn about being a big brother and role model. He's suddenly in a position of authority, which makes him nervous and afraid to show any cracks.
Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien) as "Optimus Prime," a courageous Autobot leader who has forged a new alliance with humans. The birth of the Terrans has given him renewed hope for the future.
Rory McCann (Game of Thrones) as "Megatron," the father of the Decepticon faticon who believes in making any sacrifice necessary for the survival of Cybertronian civilization. He's a headstrong idealist but isn't unwilling to adjust his strategy when victory hangs in the balance.
Cissy Jones (The Owl House) as "Elita-1," the physically gifted and confident second-in command of the Autobots. Elita-1 is fair and never overbearing to the team. She listens to everyone and is a bot the Terrans look up to.
Diedrich Bader (Better Things) as "Mandroid," the villain. He was a scientist-soldier in the war, jaded and ultimately, very anti-Cybertronian. With this new anti-Transformer ideology, he believes Earth and its humans need his protection and surmises that the annihilation of all Cybertronians is the best for the planet.
Hasbro, maker of the Transformers: EarthSpark toyline, and a production partner on the animated series, also participated in the panel presentation.
Transformers: EarthSpark is created and co-executive produced by Dale Malinowski (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and executive produced by Ant Ward (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). The film will reportedly follow Aang and Team Avatar as young adults in the time between Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. The film releases in 2024 in theaters.
Varney said this in the new video: "Hello Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast friends and Avatar-verse lovers! It's me, Janet, and I am so sad not to be at San Diego Comic-Con with Dante and with all of you. I've just been doing a little reading while I recuperate, and it reminded me that we actually have some exclusive Avatar Studios news for you all! Now, there have been a lot of rumors floating around, a lot of speculation, and a lot of excitement – I feel it too. But we figured it was time to set the record straight. The first feature-length movie from Avatar Studios will be focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends, and I for one cannot wait!"
Previous reports had suggested that the first of the three Avatar films would focus on Kyoshi, one of the previous Avatars, and that the other two would be focused on Zuko and Korra. It's unclear whether or not the Aang-focused movie confirmed at SDCC is the same as the Zuko-focused one which was previously reported, but it is clear that if the Kyoshi and Korra films are real, they will arrive after one focused on Aang.
In addition to the upcoming films, Avatar Studios, the animation studio founded by Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, is also reportedly ready to work on future TV series set in the Avatar universe.
Avatar Studios was first unveiled last year, and is led by original Avatar creators and producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Though its first three projects (including this first film) are set to be animated, theatrical films, the studio has left the door open for other types of projects down the line as well, such as TV series. Avatar Studios has also said it is laying the groundwork for an "Avatar Airbender universe" across multiple TV series, films, and platforms.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Lauren Montgomery would direct the studio's first film, with DiMartino and Konietzko involved alongside Eric Coleman.
Netflix also has a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender in the works, but Konietzko and DiMartino departed citing creative differences.

SDCC: Avatar: Braving the Elements Goes Behind the Scenes
The Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast had a panel at SDCC to get behind the scenes of the iconic franchise that began with The Last Airbender.
With the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise continuing to expand across various media including a highly anticipated live-action adaptation, the official companion podcast Avatar: Braving the Elements held a panel on Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego to take a deep dive into the series. Dante Basco, the voice of Prince Zuko, completed an episode of Nickelodeon iHeartRadio's popular podcast in front of a live audience, going behind the scenes of the making of Avatar. He is usually joined by Janet Varney, the voice of Korra.
Basco came on stage and immediately said, "What's up? Zuko here!"
He then announced that Varney would be unable to appear on the panel as planned. Basco introduced the podcast saying, "For those who don't know, we are going through the whole series episode by episode. When we go through the episodes we go through everything, and we bring in the actors, the animators, the musicians, we really get a deep dive in."
The voice of Sokka, Jack De Sena and the voice of the Earth King, Phil LaMarr, surprised the audience by appearing live in lieu of Varney. However, Varney also appeared in a video message with an announcement: "The first movie will be focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends."
LaMarr talked about his work on Avatar, saying he had never seen a show quite like it before.
De Sena then said, "Book 2 is great. It has a lot of really great Sokka stuff. Season 2 is sort of his college years. You know, getting high on cactus juice in the desert."
Basco explained that he had never actually watched the entire series in order and that he was now reliving it, and De Sena admitted there was one episode, "Zuko Alone," that he's never seen and never read the script for.
LaMarr mentioned working with the late Mako, drawing a round of applause from the audience. Basco followed up with, "He really was like an Uncle Iroh to me. I would go to him and he would give me advice."
Basco reminisced about De Sena's early days on the show, during which he was still doing All That. "I dropped out of college twice," said De Sena in reference to his busy schedule at that time of his life, which he admitted is "such a Sokka thing."
"It's fun to be like, 'Here's a moment that will be repeated to me for the next fifteen years!'" De Sena said in reference to reviewing the old episodes which have now become iconic to Avatar fans.
LaMarr said that he was initially asked to "do [his] regular voice" and was confused, as voice actors don't necessarily know what that means.
Basco asked the others what kind of benders they would be if they lived in the Four Nations, and De Sena responded that he would first of all be so excited just to be a bender at all. However, he then professed to be "loyal to water," like his character. "I'm Water Tribe!"
LaMarr also leaned toward his character's element, noting that earthbending can turn into metalbending. "If I get to choose, watch what you're sittin' on!"
Basco: "On the show, do you guys have a favorite adversary?" De Sena replied, "Can I say Zuko? We end up on good terms!" and La Marr said, "His cutest adversary is Azula!"
Basco and De Sena decided to have a "Zuko and Sokka" conversation, in which they used their characters' voices to discuss their plans for dinner and drop references to the series. They continued by talking about their love interests: "Sokka" said his favorite pickup line was, "My name's Sokka. It's pronounced with an 'okka.' And baby, I'll rock ya!" Basco, who previously mentioned that he shipped Zuko with Katara, said, "There's this Water Tribe girl I like. You don't know her."
The panel then called for some audience participation to come up to the microphone in the aisle and act out a scene from the series. They selected cosplaying volunteers to play Katara, Toph, and Long Feng. Basco played the role of Aang and the other two actors on stage played their own roles from the show. Corresponding still frames from the Season 2 episode played on the screens in the room and an assistant read the script to narrate while the volunteers and actors read their lines for the scene.
When the impromptu cast realized that they didn't have anyone to play the flying lemur Momo, Basco took on double duty to make some squeaking animal noises.
Basco, De Sena and LaMarr then treated the audience to a recreation of a fan-favorite scene. They performed this one themselves, in which Zuko and Sokka are in a war balloon shortly after going from enemies to allies, having an initially awkward conversation. LaMarr provided the narration.
Next, the panel hosted a trivia competition for the fans, who lined up in the aisle for the chance to win a cast-signed Aang figure by answering obscure questions about the series which even the cast members couldn't fully recall. "This game's harder than we thought," said De Sena when the first question stumped four contestants in a row.
After the trivia game, the panel accepted Q&A questions from fans. One "controversial" question was whether Aang or Korra had it harder as the Avatar. De Sena cheekily responded, "Korra, because she didn't have Sokka."
Basco related a memory of recording opposite Mark Hamill, who played his father Ozai in Avatar. "We finished and I was like, did we just do the Vader-Luke scene?"
LaMarr recounted the many voice roles he's played, such as Samurai Jack, Green Lantern in Justice League, and Futurama. "I'm developing a series of my own called Goblins, which is based on the D&D webcomic of the same name. The best thing is that I got to cast it." He named some of his well-known voice actor friends who he had chosen for his project and concluded, "So that was my favorite recording."
