Mount Pleasant, MI - Mt. Pleasant High School will soon being performing
The SpongeBob Musical at the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools Performing Arts Center auditorium.
The musical will be performed from March 17-20. The March 17, 18, and 19 shows will be going on at 7:30 p.m. and the March 20 shows will be going on at 2:30 p.m.
The SpongeBob Musical follows the popular Bikini Bottom characters of the beloved
SpongeBob SquarePants animated series on Nickelodeon as they deal with the threat of a volcano eruption. While some Bikini Bottom citizens find different ways to deal with the impending threat, SpongeBob SquarePants, Sandy Cheeks and Patrick Star take up the challenge to save the town.
“I picked this show because after two years of “bummer,” I felt like the whole community needed a high-energy, fun, comedy to perform in and go to,” Show director and MPHS English Instructor John Klak told
The Morning Sun. “SpongeBob has what I call “hyper-optimism” and I really liked that about his character and this show.”
While the show is based on a cartoon about aquatic creatures living in a city in under the sea, the performers in the show will be looking like humanized versions of the beloved characters.
“Most of the characters from the animated show appear in the musical but they don’t look like amusement park mascots,” Klak said. “They’re more like “humanized” looking sea creatures.”

The music for the show was written by multiple well known bands and recording artists like David Bowie, Plain White T’s, T.I., Panic! at the Disco, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Barailles, and John Legend among other well known artists.
“The show has awesome music,” Klak said. “It was a 2018 Tony nominee for several categories.”
The MPHS cast has 64 students participating in the show in performing and technical roles, which Klak notes is one of the smallest groups that an MPHS cast has had.
“What they lack in size they make up for in quality,” Klak said. “This group started learning the music for the show before we even held auditions. We’ve been working on this production in some capacity since October. This show is really good.”

The show also includes some guest performers who will appear as pirates for a special song at the beginning of act two.
“These guests are MPPS employees who have been working on their song and putting their costumes together since right before winter break in December,” Klak said.
