Billy West Reveals Kurt Cobain Once Tried to Write a Song for ‘Ren & Stimpy’

The Ren & Stimpy Show is one of Nickelodeon's most iconic animated series. The cult favorite premiered on August 11, 1991 as one of the original Nicktoons, alongside Rugrats and Doug, and if you were a '90s Nick Kid, there’s a good chance that “Happy Happy Joy Joy” will be seared into your mind until the end of time.

The cult Emmy-nominated animated series followed Ren, foul-tempered Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat. It aired for nearly 100 episodes over five seasons on Nickelodeon, ending in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV.

However, if things had gone a little bit differently though, there was a good chance that the show could’ve gotten a grunge makeover courtesy of Kurt Cobain.

During episode #49 of the The Nerdist Podcast podcast, Billy West, who originally voiced Stimpy then both Ren and Stimpy, talked about how chaotic it was in the early ‘90s with fans coming in and out of Spümcø Studios, mentioning that there were a few times where a bunch of visitors were coming in hoping to sink their teeth into what the show was up to.

A certain grunge icon got lost in the shuffle though, saying “one time this scraggly kid comes in and said he wanted to write a song for Ren and Stimpy and they said ‘yeah, that’s great’ and they threw it in the trash… and it was Kurt Cobain.’”

It’s not like the story doesn’t hold any water either, with Kurt actually having a few plush toys of Ren and Stimpy at the time.

That wasn’t the last time that the world of Nickelodeon crossed paths with the world of rock and roll, with Frank Zappa getting a speaking role on the show, and Pantera featured in the "Prehibernation" song in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Prehibernation Week”.

Ren & Stimpy is available to stream on Paramount+, with a reboot currently in the works courtesy of Comedy Central. Original creator John Kricfalusi has no creative input into and won't be receiving any financial remuneration from the new series.
