Major Broadway hit The SpongeBob Musical is setting sail for the U.K.!
A new production of the show, featuring iconic characters such as SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Gary the Snail, will run next year at venues across the nation.
Nickelodeon’s The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved SpongeBob SquarePants animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley.
The news was revealed earlier this month by the Birmingham Hippodrome, who featured the show as part of their 2023 season plans. It plays there from 11 to 15 April 2023. The show has also been revealed by Theatre Royal Plymouth, where it plays from 29 August to 2 September. We will reveal more tour dates as they come in.
A U.S. production was first seen in Chicago in 2016, going on to transfer to Broadway the subsequent year, which was followed up by a tour of North America.
The Broadway production had orchestrations, arrangements, and music supervision by Tom Kitt, choreography by Christopher Gattelli, scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Kevin Adams, projection design by Peter Nigrini, sound design by Walter Trarbach, and hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe.
A smash-hit on Broadway, the show was nominated for twelve Tony Awards, tying with Mean Girls for the most nominations at the 72nd Tony Awards, winning the Best Scenic Design of a Musical award for Zinn's scenic design.
A pro-shot of the Broadway show was filmed at the Theatre Royal Plymouth and released in 2019 on Nickelodeon.
Tickets to The SpongeBob Musical UK Premiere Tour 2023 are available today. Select performances will feature BSL Interpretation, Captions and Audio Descriptions.
