The roster for the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action Netflix series may be growing as Master Pakku has reportedly been cast. The Netflix show will be the second attempt at a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved fantasy animated series revolving around a young boy who wields the ability to control all four elements and sets out to bring piece to a world being ravaged by the Fire Nation.
Gordon Cormier is leading the cast of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series as the titular hero alongside Kiawentiio Tarbell, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Elizabeth Yu and Daniel Dae Kim. Netflix acquired the rights to the project with original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko attached, though the two would depart over creative differences and was replaced by Sleepy Hollow alum Albert Kim, who promised a faithful approach to reimagining the animated series. Filming on the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action Netflix series began this past November, but it looks like the cast hasn't stopped growing.
Avatar News has now brought word that Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series has reportedly cast Master Pakku. The show is reportedly bringing on actor A Martinez to portray the Northern-style waterbending master and instructor, though Netflix has yet to officially confirm the casting at the time of writing.
Martinez is an Indigenous Apache and Blackfeet actor with a long career best known for his roles in the series Longmire, soap Days of Our Lives, and the film Ambulance (2022).
Voiced by Victor Brandt, Princess Yue was introduced in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 as a Northern-style waterbending master and instructor who possessed immense skill and power, and was once regarded as the best waterbender in the world. Dryly sarcastic and very serious about his art, he was a harsh, but nonetheless effective teacher, as well as an outwardly acerbic yet inwardly caring old man. For most of his life, he strictly adhered to the Northern Water Tribe traditions, and exclusively taught waterbending to male students; however, after meeting Katara, his ex-fiancée's granddaughter, he agreed to be her waterbending master when he realized that his stubborn beliefs were what drove the woman he loved away. After reuniting with and marrying Kanna, Pakku opened a school in the Southern Water Tribe, accepting both male and female students. Due to his great waterbending skills and wisdom, Pakku was also a member of the Order of the White Lotus, taking part in the liberation of Ba Sing Se.
The news comes as filming on Avatar: The Last Airbender season one, which will be a retelling of "Book 1: Water", officially wrapped on June 17. Principal photography lasted exactly seven months and one day (November 16th 2021 - June 17th 2022). A premiere date for the new series has yet to be announced.
