The Superstar Parade at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida will make its final loop around the park on June 4, 2022, after a 10-year run.
The 30-minute parade made its official debut on May 8, 2012, bringing favorite characters from Universal Pictures, Illuminations Entertainment, and Nickelodeon television shows into the park in a high-energy procession set to a dramatic musical score.
During the original version, guests were treated to floats featuring characters from beloved Nickelodeon series SpongeBob SquarePants and Diego & Dora, and the hit movies Despicable Me. and Hop.
Along with floats and vehicles themed to the movies and animated television shows, the extravaganza included stilt walkers and Minions-inspired performers, as well as fish-themed characters on roller skates and colorfully costumed dancers.
In December 2016, two floats featuring Max, Duke, Gidget, Chloe, Snowball, and more from Illumination Entertainment’s movie The Secret Life of Pets were added – with one of them themed to New York’s Central Park and the other themed as an apartment with the city’s skyline – along with performers on bicycles and new dance routines.
After a closure due to the pandemic, Universal’s Superstar Parade was the first major parade to reopen in an Orlando theme park in June 2021.
“Universal’s Superstar Parade will end its run on June 4 to make way for new entertainment experiences,” Universal Orlando said in a statement.
The official description for the parade reads:
"Break Out the Confetti and Join the Fun.
"Boogie down with Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Dora and Diego. Rock out with Gru, Agnes, Margo, Edith and the Minions from Illumination’s Despicable Me. And catch funny moments from The Secret Life of Pets as the streets of Universal Studios come alive with elaborately themed floats, energetic street performers and spectacular music."
The final showing is likely to mark the last time characters from Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora & Diego, The Secret Life of Pets, and Despicable Me will be on parade together. It will most likely mean that this will be the last time Nickelodeon will have a presence at Universal Studios Orlando for the time being, following the closure of Nickelodeon Studios and Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast.
Closure of the parade will make way for new entertainment experiences. Details have not yet been announced.
The news comes just after Universal Orlando Resort permanently closed Shrek 4-D and the Classic Monsters Cafe. Universal has been in the midst of conducting many construction projects around its two theme parks. Revenge of the Mummy has been closed for a lengthy refurbishment since January. At Islands of Adventure, If I Ran The Zoo and the Caro-Seuss-el are undergoing construction, and Poseidon’s Fury just reopened a little more than a month ago after a two-year closure.
