Gordon Cormier, star of Netflix's upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, channels Aang in a new image on social media. The live-action project is based on the beloved animated series of the same name, which aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Netflix first announced that it would be re-imagining the award-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender as a live-action show in 2018. At the time, the show's original creators Brian Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino were attached to the project as executive producers and showrunners, but in 2020, they left while citing creative differences.
Still, despite losing the original creators, Netflix forged ahead and added Albert Kim as showrunner and executive producer. In an effort to avoid one of the biggest mistakes made by M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 movie The Last Airbender, the creators of Netflix's Avatar pledged their commitment to a diverse cast that authentically represents the show's characters. This cast includes Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. While expectations for Netflix's live-action remake have not been lowered, seeing the cast for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender soothed many fans' doubts about the show.
This week, Cormier gave another reason to eagerly anticipate Avatar: The Last Airbender with an in-character social media post. The Aang actor posted a picture of himself posing in the Avatar's iconic meditation form while out skateboarding. Cormier even nailed Aang's humor when he joked in the caption, "maybe I will just go skateboarding and save the world later!" Check out the new picture below:
Not only does Cormier have the pose right, but he also seems to have a perfect handle on Aang's light-hearted sense of humor. Considering the young Airbender dragged Katara and Sokka to Kyoshi Island so that he could ride an elephant koi during Avatar book 1, episode 4, "The Warriors of Kyoshi", skateboarding could definitely be one of Aang's hobbies. Also, with Cormier wearing Aang's signature yellow, the actor is completely in character. This is casting done right, and while Cormier's performance has yet to be revealed, it already seems like Netflix's creative team has chosen Avatar's lead well.
Seeing Cormier's post resonate so closely with Aang's personality will relieve many Avatar fans still unsure about Netflix's live-action series. Another complaint Shyamalan's infamous movie received was that Aang was too serious and lost his loveable sense of humor. Cormier's Aang evidently won't have that problem, so fans can look forward to seeing more of his good humor in Avatar: The Last Airbender when it is released.
