A new TikTok trend involving Squidward Tentacles from Nickelodeon's beloved animated series SpongeBob SquarePants has begun spiralling the app - and it may slightly creep you out.
In a new 'before and after' trend on the social video platform, video creators are encouraged to record their traumatised reaction after searching ‘how did Squidward die’ on the internet. The revealing answer is definitely not as lighthearted as the SpongeBob SquarePants series itself.
The first result that appears when you search for that question that in the "lost" SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Squidward’s Suicide", also known as "Red Mist", in which the anthropomorphic octopus character is supposedly shown taking his own life with a shotgun.
Most people use a particular TikTok sound, uploaded onto the platform by AntiNightcore, to take part in the trend.
During the second half of the TikTok sound, when users are showing their reactions to the search results, many appear to be shocked and somewhat traumatised.
The TikTok Hashtag #HowDidSquidwardDie currently has more than 8,000 views and is full of videos showing creators’ stunned reactions.
Throughout 13 series of Nickelodeon’s actual SpongeBob SquarePants show, none of the episodes feature any details indicating Squidward’s death.
The theory behind the answer to the question regarding Squaidward’s death is known as a Creepypasta.
Creepypastas are horror-related legends that have been shared around the Internet. The entries are often brief, user-generated, paranormal stories intended to scare readers.
As explained via Creepypasta Files Wiki, the information about Squidward’s death originates from an anonymous user on an online forum.
The urban legend was reportedly told by an intern working for Nickelodeon who claimed to have watched an episode titled "Squidward’s Suicide" which ends with the fictional character taking his own life. The urban legend is so infamous amongst fans that producers actually referenced it in an episode - before being replaced with a more innocent scene.
Unfortunately, rumors about the death of SpongeBob characters come around often, with Sandy Cheeks and Mr. Krabs also falling victim to the hoaxes.
