GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization, has announced the very exciting news that Nickelodeon has received four nominations in the 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards!
Nickelodeon's long-running animated series The Loud House; the "Manlee Men" episode of Danger Force; and Power Rangers: Dino Fury, the latest iteration of the Power Rangers franchise have each received a nomination in the "Outstanding Kids & Family Programming" category of the 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
Meanwhile, Nickelodeon and Paramount+'s CG-animated Rugrats revival has been nominated in the "Outstanding Children’s Programming" of the awards.
Both categories recognizes and honors media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and the issues that affect their lives.

The Loud House currently has three LGBTQ+ characters. In August 2016, the show introduced Harold and Howard McBride, the same-sex parents of Lincoln's best friend, Clyde in the episode "Attention Deficit" (pictured above). Clyde parents are voiced by comedians voiced by Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show, Everybody Hates Chris and Michael McDonald (Invader Zim, Futurama, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call).
Then, in June 1997, the series revealed that Lincoln's sister, Luna (Nika Futterman, (It's Pony, The Last of Us), and her crush, Sam (voiced by Jill Talley (Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling, SpongeBob SquarePants) in season two and by Alyson Stoner (Drake & Josh) from season three onwards) were bi-sexual, in the episode "L Is for Love".
The Danger Force episode "Manlee Men," which premiered in June 2021, introduced viewers to trans actor Sasha Cohen, who portrayed Finn in the episode. Sasha was discovered by Nickelodeon and Danger Force star Michael D. Cohen's (no relation) Trans Youth Acting Challenge, which aims to help trans and nonbinary youth break into showbusiness.
Danger Force and Henry Danger, the show which Danger Force is spun-off from, has a legacy of supporting LGBTQ+ actors. Michael revealed in 2019 that he had transitioned himself. Additionally, the Danger Force episode "Say My Name," which aired in April 2020, featured a child with two dads.
Power Rangers: Dino Fury revealed last year that Green Ranger Izzy, played by Tessa Rao, was part of the LGBTQ+ community - the first LGBTQ+ Ranger in the franchise's 28 seasons!
Lastly, Nickelodeon made headlines last year when they confirmed that Phil and Lil’s mom Betty DeVille was gay in Paramount+'s CG-animated reboot of Rugrats! Although she was married to Howard in the original '90s series, Betty has always been a low-key always been a queer icon. And now it's canon. This time, instead of her sweater having the “female” symbol, Betty’s donning a Gemini sweater. Betty is voiced by actor Natalie Morales in the new series, who is queer herself.
RuPaul's Drag Race Season 13 finalist Gottmik announced nominees of the 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in select GLAAD Media Awards categories live via GLAAD’s TikTok channel.
The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. Since its inception in 1990, the GLAAD Media Awards have grown to be the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally. The 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Gilead Sciences, Inc. and Ketel One Family Made Vodka.
The 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards nominees were published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2021. The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies, which fund GLAAD's work to accelerate LGBTQ acceptance, will be held in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, April 2, 2022 and in New York at the Hilton Midtown on Friday, May 6, 2022.
