Netflix Serves Up the Scares with 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The Carnival of Doom' From October 1

Submitted for the approval of The Midnight Society, the first season of Nickelodeon's critically-acclaimed Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival is set to haunt Netflix from Friday, October 1!

Nickelodeon’s three-part revival of ’90s series Are You Afraid of the Dark? was quite a treat during the 2019 Halloween season, introducing a brand new Midnight Society and making them the stars of the show in a life-and-death battle against the evil Mr. Tophat and his sinister Carnival of Doom. The limited series, penned by BenDavid Grabinski and directed by Dean Israelite (SkiptraceHappily), managed to hit that “gateway horror” sweet spot.

In the new series, “The members of the Midnight Society tell a terrifying tale of the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster, Mr. Top Hat, only to witness the shocking story come frightfully to life and prepare for an adventure beyond their wildest nightmares.”

In Part One, "Submitted For Approval", tormented by nightmares, the new girl in school feels and out of place until a mysterious group invites her to join. All she has to do is tell a truly terrifying story.

In Part Two, "Opening Night", when a friend's disappearance seems to be linked to Rachel's story, the Midnight Society decides to attend the Carnival of Doom. Is it the same carnival from her nightmares? How?

In Part Three, "Destroy All Tophats", with her friends' lives at stake, Rachel decides to take charge and end Mr. Tophat's reign of terror. Will the story have a happy ending, or is the Midnight Society doomed?

And no matter what happens, remember, it's All Part Of The Show!

The new members of the Midnight Society are: Rachel, played by Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick); Gavin, played by Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.); Akiko, played by Miya Cech (The Astronauts, Rim of the World, Always Be My Maybe); Graham, played by Jeremy Taylor (IT: Chapter Two, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween); and Louise, played by Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl, The Worst Witch), with the Carnival of Doom’s ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, played by Rafael Casal (Blindspotting).

All three parts of Are You Afraid of the Dark? ranked as the most co-viewed show on broadcast and TV each week, with 33% of Adults 18-49 watching with a Kid 6-11. It was the number-one live-action series on cable TV in all kids’ demos (2-11, 6-11 and tweens 9-14). And with an industry standard of shows targeting 6-11-year-olds experiencing roughly 20% lifts in L3 time shifted ratings compared to Live Same Day, Are You Afraid of the Dark? scored 35% lifts among Kids 6-11 and 36% overall with the Kids 2-11 demo in L3 versus LSD.

In addition to the reboot, fans can catch episodes from the classic '90s series on NickRewind, as well as stream the original series and The Carnival of Doom on Paramount+. Visit ParamountPlus.com for a free trial!

Nickelodeon followed up Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The Carnival of Doom with a second season, Curse of the Shadows, which aired on Nickelodeon earlier this year.

NICKELODEON HD+ INDIA TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE CASAGRANDES

New Series Follows Adventures of a Multigenerational Mexican-American Family
in Spinoff of the Emmy Award-Winning The Loud House

Share it: @nickindia @thecasagrandes

A new home in the city holds big adventures, laughs and love around every corner in The Casagrandes, Nickelodeon’s new original animated series, premiering Monday 19th July 2021 at 6:00pm on Nickelodeon HD+ in India.

A spinoff of Nick’s animated hit The Loud House, The Casagrandes tells the story of 11-year-old Ronnie Anne who moves to the city with her mom and older brother to live with their big, loving family, the Casagrandes.

After moving in with their grandparents in Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne adjusts to her new life living under one roof and over the family-run mercado (local market), which is a gathering place for everyone in the neighborhood. The series showcases the culture, humor, and love that’s part of growing up in a multigenerational Mexican-American family.

The Casagrandes stars Izabella Alvarez (Westworld) as 11-year-old Ronnie Annie, Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) as her brother Bobby and Sumalee Montano (Nashville) as her mom Maria. Alvarez, PenaVega and Montano bring these characters to life, alongside: Carlos Alazraqui (The Fairly OddParents) as Carlos, “Tio;” Roxana Ortega (The League) as Frida, “Tia;” Alexa PenaVega (Spy Kids) as Carlota; Jared Kozak (Born this Way) as CJ; Alex Cazares (The Boss Baby: Back in Business) as Carl; Ruben Garfias (East Los High) as Hector, “Abuelo;” and Sonia Manzano (Sesame Street) as Rosa, “Abuela.” Additionally, Eugenio Derbez (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) gives voice to Dr. Santiago, a physician living and working in Peru, who is Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s father.

Ronnie Anne’s new apartment building holds new friends and neighbors, including: Ken Jeong (Dr. Ken) as Stanley Chang; Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa Explains It All, Sabrina the Teenage Witch) as Becca Chang; Leah Mei Gold (Legion) as 12-year-old Sid Chang, Ronnie Anne’s new friend; and Lexi Sexton as Adelaide Chang, Sid’s 6-year-old little sister.

In the first episode, “Going Overboard,” Ronnie Anne finds out her Tio Carlos was a famous skateboarder and she begs him to teach her some new moves. Then, in “Walk Don’t Run,” Ronnie Anne and Sid start a dog-walking business to save up for a new skateboard in a plan that quickly gets out of hand.

The Casagrandes theme song is performed by pop star Ally Brooke.

The Casagrande family was first introduced in the The Loud House special, “The Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos,” which premiered in on Nickelodeon USA on May 2017 and ranks as the highest-rated premiere for the series in Live+7 with both K2-11 (6.6/1.8M) and K6-11 (8.1/1.3M).

The Casagrandes made its world premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on Monday, October 14, at 1:30 p.m. (ET/PT). Following its launch, the popular series has spawned a podcast, The Casagrandes Familia Sounds and vlog series. Currently in its second season, a third season is currently in production.

The Casagrandes is produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif. The series is executive produced by Michael Rubiner (The Loud House), with Karen Malach (The Loud House) serving as producer, Alan Foreman as supervising producer and Miguel Puga as supervising director. Award-winning cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz (Coco) serves as consulting producer and cultural consultant.

On This Day in 1996 | 'Harriet The Spy' Was Released in Theaters

.On This Day in 1996 | 'Harriet The Spy' Was Released in Theaters

On this day 24 years ago, Harriet the Spy was released in theaters! We also got our first look at Hey Arnold!, when the show's pilot episode was shown as a short cartoon before the film!

The first feature film from the Nickelodeon, Harriet the Spy is an updated version of Louise Fitzhugh's best-selling 1964 children's novel.

Sixth grade outcast Harriet (Michelle Trachtenberg, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) is an only child who has mostly been raised by her nanny, Golly (Rosie O'Donnell, Kids' Choice Awards, Sleepless In Seattle, A League of Their Own), rather than her materialistic parents.

Harriet wants to be a writer when she grows up, and only Golly encourages her creative pursuits. Meanwhile, Harriet dons a yellow raincoat and a belt full of gadgets to spy on everyone around her, including her eccentric neighbor with a lot of cats and the other kids at school.

Carefully taking notes in her private notebook, Harriet makes clever and cruel observations about her subjects, including her best friends, would-be scientist Janie (Vanessa Lee Chester) and overburdened Sport (Gregory Smith).

Harriet's world begins to change when Golly leaves, signaling that it is time for her to grow up. Then a snobby girl a school, Marion, gets her hands on Harriet's special notebook and makes its contents known to the whole school. Soon everyone is against Harriet, and she must concoct a plan to get even.

From Vulture:

J. Smith-Cameron Answers Every Question We Have About Harriet the Spy

In the small but mighty subgroup of “films featuring misfit preteen girls whose precociousness frequently leads to trouble,” there is Little Women, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, Matilda, and, for the Nickelodeon generation specifically, Harriet the Spy, a genre-defying movie (is it comedy? a drama? a spy caper?) that put then-10-year-old Michelle Trachtenberg on the map, showcased ’90s New York in all its rose-colored glory, and introduced a world of viewers to the joys of tomato-and-mayo sandwiches. When Harriet, based on a 1964 Louise Fitzhugh novel of the same name, was released in 1996, it was a moderate success at the box office, earning a total of $26 million on a $12 million budget. VHS consumers will remember the orange-clamshell release featuring two Rugrats episodes (the pilot of Hey Arnold! was shown ahead of the movie in theaters), a relic of its home viewing popularity. Critics, though, were less effusive, with most praising Trachtenberg and co-star Rosie O’Donnell’s performances but criticizing its slow pacing and lack of a real plot (harsh, but fair).

Twenty-five years after the movie hit theaters, we called up J. Smith-Cameron, the veteran actress (and current Succession star) who played Violetta Welsch, Harriet’s mother, to parse through the story they ended up filming and everything that happened behind the scenes, too. Cameron spoke to Vulture — a day before leaving for Italy to film scenes for the HBO hit later documented on her Instagram (and in the pages of New York Magazine) — about impressing O’Donnell with her Broadway bona fides, hanging out with Courtney B. Vance in Toronto, and the enduring brilliance of the Harriet costume design.

What do you remember from your audition?
So the first screenplay was written by Theresa Rebek, who I really admired a lot, and I think she then was replaced and it was rewrittenDouglas Petrie co-wrote the script. between the time I auditioned and got there. So when I first read my audition scenes, Mrs. Welch was sort of stuck up, and she talked to Harriet like an adult. She was kind of arch. And I thought I gave a very funny audition doing that, not pulling the punches of that.

Then when I got the script, it was all different and she was much more warm and fuzzy. And Harriet was spunky but not — you know how in the book, Harriet is an oddball? She’s like Lynda Barry or Fran Lebowitz in child form. And Rosie O’Donnell’s Golly is also a very, very specific character in the book. They’re all oddballs in the book. And this was sort of like a brighter, sunnier [version]. So it was a bit schizophrenic for me in my mind because I had gotten the part reading some version in between the book and what it ended up as.

But when I saw the movie, I was very proud of it. I thought it was really great and really charming and had a really fresh look … yet it was slightly confusing because it didn’t quite feel like the book. It had its own little universe that was very true to itself, and very fresh and funny and sweet, but just a different tone. I have a real fondness for it, and it was a really magical time.

It sounds like you were a big fan of the book originally.
Yes, I was. There’s a lot about the book that just immediately gets your attention when you read it. It almost doesn’t read like a children’s book. You know what I mean? It’s not a child’s world, exactly. It’s kind of droll … Harriet’s very snarky, but it came out of her being precocious and an only child. In New York, children are sort of sophisticated in a way, and yet there’s something provincial about them because they can’t go anywhere and be wowed by any place they visit because they’ve already been in New York. And as someone who didn’t grow up in New York, I remember marveling at it, that a kid could be that blunt or that frank on her own.

How did the adaptation’s change in tone feel to you, once you saw the movie?
I almost think of it as two separate things. There’s the novel I loved, and the characters I loved from the novel, and then our movie, which I also loved, but was not Harriet the Spy, exactly. So I feel like it was a charming movie, but in my mind, it’s very different from the book. But both things can exist. And in a way, you’d almost rather that. If you really loved the book, it’s almost like, don’t try to be the book. Do your own thing. And that’s sort of what they did.

I read that the movie was filmed in Toronto, despite being a classic New York story.
It’s such a New York story! I still feel that there may be another version of Harriet the Spy that’s really shot in New York. Because it’s such a classic, it could be done again and again.

I remember that we stayed in this cool hotel in Toronto. There were people I knew from another cast, maybe two other casts, in the hotel, too. I remember Courtney VanceVance appeared in The Preacher’s Wife the same year that Harriet was in theaters. was there — I had gone way back with Courtney, I had known him in my early 20s — and I remember hanging out with him a little bit in the hotel. It was just a very festive, jolly time. And I remember being very impressed by all the local Canadian actors. They had all these really crΓ¨me de la crΓ¨me character actors who were CanadianThe adult Canadian actors included Sally Cahill as a maid, Jackie Richardson as Janie’s mother, and Robert Joy as Harriet’s father. in Harriet, all of whom were, I thought, wonderful.

Most of your scenes in the film were with Michelle Trachtenberg, who was only 10 when she started filming but was already a child star thanks to The Adventures of Pete & Pete. What was it like working with her?
She was this very appealing, bubbly, very beautiful child star from Nickelodeon. And she was feeling her oats, but not in an obnoxious way. It was like everything was taking off for her. But she was sweet about it. And I just remember her taking it very seriously. A true professional. She and I kind of rediscovered each other on Twitter a few years ago. She was so sweet and bubbly in the messages, again.

Harriet the Spy came out in 1996, the same year as The Rosie O’Donnell Show debuted. How was having Rosie as a co-star?
Golly [in the movie] was completely different from the character in the book, but Rosie was so game and very natural and ebullient in the part. Even though it was very different, I thought it worked. It was the first time I got to know Rosie, and I remember that she had seen me in plays,Smith-Cameron made her Broadway debut in 1982 in Crimes of the Heart. She has appeared in many Broadway and Off Broadway plays since then. and she was very enthusiastic about working with me. And then at one point in the makeup trailer, I remember her telling me that she thought I looked like Patti LuPone, which I’d never heard before, so I was kind of thrilled by it. She was just very warm and friendly.

And then the next year after it came out, I think in ’97 or ’98, I was in this play called As Bees in Honey Drown, and it was kind of a big hit Off Broadway, and I had this real tour-de-force part.Smith-Cameron played Alexa, a con artist, in a role that earned her an Obie Award, a Drama Desk nomination, and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. And I remember on [O’Donnell’s] talk show, her talking about it and saying, “Oh my friend J. Smith-Cameron is fantastic in that play, what did you think of it?” And she’s talking to Russell Crowe, and it wasn’t his kind of play. But he did say he thought I was worth the price of admission.

You have a great scene with Rosie early on, when Mrs. Welsch tells her she’s been fired after taking Harriet out into the city without her parents’ knowledge.
Oh, gosh. I wish I remembered it better. I do remember it was very cold and I was in an evening gown. That was great.

Do you still keep in touch with Rosie at all?
I do, because Rosie’s so political, too, and so outspoken. I had contacted her to be part of some marches and stuff like that. So we kind of stayed in touch on social media, basically. Because no one was really in touch in real life for a while.

You also had a great dynamic with Robert Joy, who played Harriet’s dad, Ben Welsch.
I’d known but never worked with him, and he’s sort of a legend in the New York theater world and the film world. I kind of looked up to him … he’s like a star in my mind, this really unique, cool actor.

I remember a scene with Bob and Michelle where we’re kind of dealing with her, and we had this repartee, and I had such joy working with Bob and this charming kid. I think Bob and I both felt a little bit like we were straddling the book characters and the way the whole movie was kind of conceived. I felt like we were both trying to be a little bit buttoned-up and starchy, and I thought that worked out okay.

One of my favorite things about Harriet is that she’s the rare young female character who’s not nice — in fact, she’s kind of an asshole, sometimes. She alienates her friends and writes such mean things about them.
Totally. She’s a beyotch. She really is. She’s sort of a little monster. She’s sort of grouchy, and you can infer that she’s got a whole “this is a sophisticated kid that’s younger than her inner life” thing. She’s still gotta work out things. She’s assumed a sophistication and maturity that she doesn’t have yet. And that’s such a New York-y thing, you know?

The movie had a female director, Bronwen Hughes,Harriett was Hughe’s directorial debut, which she followed up with Forces of Nature. which was a pretty big deal for the time, and still is.
It was really exciting to have a female director, so I really appreciated that. Bronwen was like Puck or something. She was just like the Pied Piper, energetic. She was the perfect person to direct that movie. Very much her own person and very creative and authentic and full of life.

I read an interview with Vanessa Lee Chester, who played Harriet’s friend Janie, where she said she remembered the director always dancing and playing music on set to keep the kids energized. What was it like working with so many child actors?
I like working with kids, and I’ve played a mom so much in my career that that happens a lot. And showbiz kids are usually a little different than other kids, but those kids were the nicest version of that, if you can read between the lines there. I thought all the kid performers were fantastic.

On a different note, when I rewatched the movie, I realized that the clothes, by costume designer Donna Zakowska, are fantastic. Those ’90s sweaters!
I remember being so impressed with her, and I thought that she dressed us so particularly. I had satin suits that felt like they were almost a callback to the original era the book is written in, and other things that were very of the moment, so she was kind of bridging the book and the flavor of the movie, which had a different world to it.

And then I was at the premiere for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, back whenever that was — the last few years, I don’t know about you, but I could not tell you the time when it was — I remember seeing [Zakowska] and being so knocked out watching the clothes in Maisel. And when I saw it was the lady from Harriet the Spy who’d done the clothes, I was like, that makes sense.

Okay, we need to talk about those tomato sandwiches.
The tomato sandwiches! Listen, I’ll have you know that I bought a tomato from a farm stand driving into the Hamptons yesterday, and I went, “I’m gonna have a Harriet the Spy tomato sandwich.”

With mayo?
Yeah! I mean, it’s hilarious. But I was the odd kid who liked tomato sandwiches when I was little, too.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--Aug. 26, 2021--Nickelodeon is bringing magic to life with That Girl Lay Lay, an all-new buddy comedy series premiering Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT). That Girl Lay Lay follows Lay Lay (Alaya “That Girl Lay Lay” High), an avatar from a personal affirmation app that magically comes to life, and her best friend Sadie (Gabrielle Nevaeh Green) as they navigate life as teenagers and discover who they truly are.

In the premiere of That Girl Lay Lay, Sadie wishes upon a star that her hype-girl avatar, Lay Lay, were real, causing Lay Lay to magically come to life. Now that she is in the real world with Sadie, Lay Lay decides that she wants a teenage experience herself and enrolls in the local school. Using her innate charm, Lay Lay convinces Sadie that she needs to come out of her shell and the best way for her to stand out is to run for student council.

That Girl Lay Lay follows Lay Lay, an avatar from a phone app, and Sadie, a girl who is struggling to make her mark in school and in need of a best friend to talk to. After Sadie wishes upon a star that her hype-girl avatar Lay Lay was real, she magically comes to life, and the two friends learn that when they are together, they can accomplish anything. That Girl Lay Lay also stars Peyton Perrine III as Sadie’s brother, Marky; Tiffany Daniels as Sadie’s mom, Trish; Thomas Hobson as Sadie’s dad, Bryce; and Caleb Brown as Lay Lay and Sadie’s classmate, Jeremy.

The series marks Nickelodeon’s first project under an overall deal with That Girl Lay Lay to develop original multiform programming and music initiatives, and build a cross-category consumer products business. In addition to her new comedy series, Nickelodeon’s comprehensive strategy for That Girl Lay Lay includes supporting her music career and an exclusive line of consumer products, with merchandising agreements spanning categories such as softlines, toy, publishing and more.

That Girl Lay Lay is produced by Will Packer Media (Bigger), with Will Packer (Little, Ride Along) and Carolyn Newman serving as executive producers and Toy Monique Hawkins and Peggy Cheng overseeing. The series is created and executive produced by David A. Arnold (Side Hustle, Fuller House, Bigger), who also serves as showrunner. John Beck & Ron Hart (Side Hustle, Fuller House, Liv and Maddie) serve as executive producers.

Production of That Girl Lay Lay for Nickelodeon is overseen by Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Jessica Brown serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

How David Arnold brought the laughs to Nickelodeon

The stand-up comedian known for Fat Ballerina and Fuller House went back to his roots to develop That Girl Lay Lay, which premieres September 23.

Stand-up comedian David Arnold may have traded in his mic for a pen when he created Nickelodeon’s upcoming comedy That Girl Lay Lay, but he didn’t stray too far from his roots, infusing the series with plenty of humor centered on family, which he considers his comedy signature.

Arnold serves as an executive producer and showrunner on the live-action Nickelodeon show that’s set to premiere on September 23. That Girl Lay Lay (13 x 24 minutes) centers around teenager Sadie, who discovers an avatar from a motivational app that comes to life and helps her learn to be more confident.

Arnold was working as a writer and supervising producer on Nickelodeon series Side Hustle when he learned that the studio was looking for someone to pitch a series starring young rapper and social media star That Girl Lay Lay. Armed with a one-sentence summary of the general direction for the show (“Weird Science meets Young Frankenstein when a teenage wiz kid creates her own best friend”), he went to work.

To create the concept, Arnold wove in his own kids’ love of their phones, the struggles that parents have as children grow up, and played on the comedy around how different the exuberant Lay Lay is from the meek protagonist Sadie.

“I wanted to balance the drama with the humor,” says Arnold. “So while the show features some fantastical elements, it is really about how vulnerable teenagers feel at that stage in their lives.”

To make sure what he was writing was funny, he posted clips from his comedy routine and content featuring his family on his Facebook page to see how people reacted to the various bits, giving him valuable insights into what audiences might find funny on the series.

Arnold also dug deep into his stand-up roots, pulling jokes from the series scripts to turn into a routine for LA comedy clubs. Preforming for an adult audience ultimately gave him a better understanding of what would resonate with families tuning into the show, he says.

A comedian who has done stand-up for 27 years, Arnold often touches on mature topics like sex, race and divorce to fuel for his routines. But from his early days performing on Def Comedy Jam, Jamie Foxx Presents Laffapoalooza and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, up to his 2020 Netflix comedy special Fat Ballerina, the core of his comedy has always revolved around families.

After a number of years on the stand-up circuit, he expanded into narrative storytelling in 2004 with the short film Because My Stand-Up Is Not Enough!! He later landed a gig writing on comedy show The Tony Rock Project, where he met producer Anthony Hill (Raven’s Home), who asked Arnold to write for Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns in 2009. Arnold has since had credits on series including House of Payne, Real Husbands of Hollywood, Bigger and Fuller House.

While That Girl Lay Lay hasn’t launched yet, Arnold is hopeful that Nickelodeon will order a second season, and he’s in conversations about additional episodes now.

In the meantime, he’s lined up an 18-city stand-up tour called “It Ain’t For the Weak,” which will culminate in a Netflix special recorded in his hometown, and he’s working with Opera’s OWN Network to create a show based on his family and social media presence. He’s also in the process of writing a romantic comedy—his dream project as a self-described sucker for sappy stories—to bring to market.

“I’m thankful I’ve been able to play in all these different lanes, and now my fans can see there are more sides to me—not just the me they see at my shows,” he says. “I’m excited for people to see [That Girl Lay Lay], and also for what’s to come.”
