Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Nickelodeon and Chief Content Officer has revealed that Nickelodeon is currently developing a fourth movie inspired by the network's beloved animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants!
As the film is still under wraps, not much is currently known about the film, including whether it'll be a theatrical movie or for a streaming service such as Paramount+. Nickelodeon's last SpongeBob Movie, Sponge on the Run was originally slated for theaters, however, ViacomCBS moved the film to Paramount+ due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.
It's also currently unknown whether the film is one of the previously announced character movies in development for streaming.
This would be the fourth SpongeBob film, after 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, 2015’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and the aforementioned The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

In a speech at the 2021 Edinburgh Television Festival, ViacomCBS Networks UK chief content officer Ben Frow has committed to commissioning local content for the company’s forthcoming SVOD service Paramount+ which is set to launch in the UK in 2022.
The direct-to-consumer streaming service is the successor to CBS All Access, Paramount+ launched in the US and across Latin America and in Brazil on 4 March 2021, the Nordics on 25 March and Australia on August 11. It offers exclusive access to the latest films from the Paramount Pictures canon and TV series from the ViacomCBS stable such as Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. Paramount Network, MTV, Comedy Central and Channel 5 UK.
In August, ViacomCBS announced plans to roll out Paramount+ in key European markets including UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, building on its partnership with Sky.
Yet in addition to a catalogue of hit shows and movies from the ViacomCBS brands and studios, the UK version’s content offer, as revealed by Frow, will feature high-end, original drama and documentary content from the UK. For this, Frow called on the UK’s burgeoning indie sector to pitch series which had UK resonance and global appeal, confirming that the business had a dedicated budget to invest in premium local content. “It’s about great content. We’re starting to work on our Paramount+ factual and drama slates – all ideas are welcome,” Frow told the Edinburgh audience.
Speaking alongside Frow, ViacomCBS Networks UK Daniel Pearl, overseeing unscripted originals for Paramount+ and Channel 5, welcomed the opportunity to develop premium show of a global audience and asked indies to submit a broad range of ideas covering anthologies, feature documentaries, boxsets and more. “Ours is an ongoing commitment to commissioning premium shows for SVOD and we are listening to the best ideas out there,” he added.
Netflix has renewed Sharkdog for a second season ahead of the show's debut on Friday, September 3! The news was revealed by Liam Mitchell, who voices Max on the show in a jawsome interview with CURRENT. In addition to the renewal, Mitchell also revealed that season one will have 20-ish episodes and a Halloween special.
Sharkdog is a brand new animated series from Singaporean creator Jacinth Tan. The 20 x 7 minute episode animated series is produced by ViacomCBS International Studios, in partnership with Singaporean based CGI animation studio One Animation.
Sharkdog follows 10 year old Max and his best friend Sharkdog - half shark, half dog, all appetite. Blissfully unaware of his own strength, stealth and general sharkiness, Sharkdog often leaves a trail of chaos in his wake. But, like all good half-dogs, he's Max's BFF and Max is his.
Sharkdog is VIS' first internationally originated global animated series for Netflix. It is also the first animated series from Singapore to come out of Nickelodeon's Global Animated Shorts Program, designed to identify and develop long form original comedy-driven content for kids globally.
Prior to Netflix ordering Sharkdog, Nickelodeon International announced in 2017 that it had greenlit a series of 90-second shorts based on the characters, which premiered as a short-form digital series for the Nickelodeon Play App in Asia.
Sharkdog was the first Singaporean series to come out of Nickelodeon's Global Animated Shorts Program. But it’s in good company, as several animated shorts from Nick’s program have turned into full fledged series recently. This includes Toronto-based prodco Nelvana’s 26 x 22-minute animated series Ollie’s Pack, which began as an original short dubbed Monster Pack for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program; The Loud House, also from the 2013 Animated Shorts Program; and It’s Pony, which was part of Nick’s 2015 Global Animated shorts program.

In an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box today (August 20), Nickelodeon president and CEO Brian Robbins revealed that, following the success of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show, the first two spin-offs from Nickelodeon's hit SpongeBob SquarePants animated series, plans are well on the way to expand the SpongeBob Universe even more by giving more beloved characters from the show their own spin-off TV series and/or movie!
Interestingly, Robbins seemingly confirms plans for a SpongeBob spin-off for Sandy Cheeks, the Texan squirrel and one of SpongeBob's closest friends in Bikini Bottom! First reported earlier this year, the hybrid movie is said to be putting the animated character in a live-action setting. Nickelodeon is producing the untitled movie, which will be directed by Liza Johnson.
In the interview, Robbins, who also serves as President, Kids & Family Entertainment at ViacomCBS and as Chief Content Officer, Kids & Family, Paramount+, discusses how Nickelodeon is more than capable of competing against Disney and its branded Disney+ SVOD platform.
Update (8/23) - In a recent interview at MegaCon, Rodger Bumpass, the voice of Squidward, revealed that there are at least two SpongeBob spin-off specials in development, with plans to eventually do one spin-off for each character. The first two spin-offs won't be centered on Squidward, however. Bumpass also suggested that the specials could be for Netflix, but this may have changed now that ViacomCBS has changed streaming strategies.

In this episode, Pongo interviews Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Nickelodeon and Chief Content Officer, kids and family for Paramount, about the company's deep library of IP and franchises for kids and families and the strategy around reaching the youngest consumers of content.
In the lucrative battle for children streamers of video content, Nickelodeon features a character line-up (SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, iCarly) more than capable of competing against Disney and its branded Disney+ SVOD platform, says CEO Brian Robbins, who is also chief content officer, kids and family at Paramount+.
According to Nielsen, children from 2 – 11 years of age are watching 11+ hours of content weekly on connected streaming devices. Speaking Aug. 20 on “CNBC Squawk Box,” Robbins said SpongeBob SquarePants characters are being spun-off in separate series and movies on Paramount+.
[“That's the gift that keeps on giving,” said the host] “SpongeBob is truly ubiquitous. He might be the most popular animated character of all time" [added Robbins.]
Robbins said ViacomCBS remains “excited” about the launch of Paramount+, and the Aug. 20 theatrical debut of Paw Patrol: The Movie, which the executive says is a preschool juggernaut.
“It’s the biggest preschool franchise in the world,” he said. “We want to continue to leverage our biggest franchises into direct-to-consumer relationships with our audiences.”
Relationships that include consumer products and amusement rides.
“That’s the case with Paw Patrol, it’s not only the biggest preschool show for us, it’s a CPG juggernaut for us,” Robbins said.
When asked about kid-friendly Disney+, which ended its most recent fiscal period with 116 million subscribers worldwide, the executive said the kids market is big enough for multiple players.
“Kids are enormous consumers of content…they seek out what they want,” Robbins said. “Sometimes that’s going to be on Disney+ and that’s OK, a lot of the time it’s going to be on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.”
Brian Robbins, CEO of ViacomCBS's kid-centered TV network Nickelodeon, said Friday that he isn't worried about competition from Disney+ (NYSE:DIS) because "there are enough eyeballs for everyone."
"Kids are enormous consumers of content ... and they seek out what they want," he told CNBC.
"Sometimes that's going to be on Disney+ and that's OK, a lot of the time it's going to be on Nickelodeon and Paramount+," Robbins added.
The Nickelodeon CEO asserted that kids programming provided a key draw for ViacomCBS's Paramount+ streaming service.
As a result, the company is looking to leverage its existing franchises to create more streaming content, Robbins reported. This includes spin-offs centered on SpongeBob SquarePants characters and projects like the recently released PAW Patrol movie.
Robbins said the company also got a programming boost from multi-generational interest, with parents introducing their kids to nostalgic properties or younger people discovering old content through streaming.
He pointed to the recent iCarly reboot as an example of this process in action.

Nickelodeon is set to premiere The Smurfs, a brand new CG-animated series which follows the beloved characters embarking upon rousing new adventures in September 2021 - and it seems like Nickelodeon has even bigger plans for the iconic franchise!
In a Smurf-tastic new video in ViacomCBS' Streaming On series, Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Nickelodeon and Chief Content Officer, kids and family for Paramount+ revealed that Nickelodeon is currently working on a The Smurfs movie!
As the film is still under wraps, not much is currently known about the theatrical. Interestingly, Robbins mentions the The Smurfs theatrical in a video for ViacomCBS' streaming services, which may hint that the movie will be simultaneously released in theaters and on Paramount+, similar to how Paramount Pictures just released PAW Patrol: The Movie.
Blue and small, and standing only three apples tall, The Smurfs are set to make their Nickelodeon debut in an all-new series premiering Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The news was announced today by Nickelodeon, the number-one network for kids, and LAFIG Belgium and IMPS, the worldwide licensors for The Smurfs. All-new episodes will continue to rollout Friday nights on Nickelodeon and debut internationally in the fall.
The original series marks the return of the globally renowned characters to television for the first time in nearly 40 years and follows Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy and the other inhabitants of Smurf Village on all-new adventures, packed with humor, heart and high-stakes action. In the premiere episode, “Smurf-Fu,” when Smurfette rescues Brainy from a giant snake, the other Smurfs ask her to teach them “Smurf-Fu.” Next in, “Diaper Daddy,” when everyone is tired of changing Baby’s diapers, Handy decides to invent a robot that will do the job.
Upcoming episodes include: "Clumsy Not Clumsy" (#102), "Unsmurfable Smile" (#103), "Who's Heftier?" (#104), "Smurfs In Disguise" (#105), "DRIIINNGGGGG!" (#106), "Alien Smurf" (#107), "Leaf It Alone" (#108) and "Bringing Up Smurfy" (#109).
Leading up to the premiere, Nickelodeon will treat viewers to a sneak-peak on Monday. September 6 at 12:30 p.m. (ET/PT). In the episode "Where's Papa Smurf?," because of a mishap, Papa Smurf disappears and the only way to make him visible again is to get a whisker from Azrael. (#104A)
The voice cast pushing the charm and absurdity of the original comics to even greater heights includes: David Freeman (7 Promises) as Papa Smurf, the father figure keeping the other Smurfs in line; Berangere McNeese (Matriochkas) as Smurfette, a curious Smurf who is always ready to take part in new adventures; Lenny Mark Irons (No Man’s Land) as Gargamel, a conniving human wizard with a bottomless thirst to capture Smurfs; Youssef El Kaoukibi (NRJ Belgium) as Brainy, who considers himself the smartest of the bunch; and Catherine Hershey (Boundary Games) as Willow, the brave and wise matriarch of a new tribe of girl Smurfs.
The Smurfs CG-animated series acquisition is overseen by Layla Lewis, Senior Vice President, Global Acquisitions and Content Partnerships and Dana Cluverius, Senior Vice President, Current Series Animation for Nickelodeon.

ViacomCBS Networks Germany (Deutschland), Switzerland (Schweiz) and Austria (Österreich) will be launching a Comedy Central programming block on the free-to-air (FTA) Nickelodeon Österreich on Friday 1st October 2021. The Comedy Central block will replace the older skewing Nicknight block on the channel, and will compliment the main Comedy Central channel.
Following the change, Nickelodeon Österreich will continue to broadcast children's programming between 06:00 - 20:15, with Comedy Central airing between 20:15 - 01:00, and Nickelodeon classics for night owls airing between 01:00 - 06:00. The main Comedy Central channel will continue to broadcast 24/7 in its usual channel slot.
The news follows the announcement that CH Media will be taking over the running of Nick Schweiz on Friday 1st October 2021. Nick Österreich and Nickelodeon Schweiz currently share a feed, and the addition of Comedy Central to the Austrian feed aligns the channel with Nick Deutschland, which airs Comedy Central+1, a time-shift version of Comedy Central Deutschland nightly between 20:15 and 01:00.

Oktober 2021 Verstärkung: Comedy Central Austria wird dann täglich zusätzlich von 20:15 Uhr bis 01:00 Uhr im Anschluss an das Programm von Nick Austria gezeigt und löst damit das bisherige Nicknight-Programmfenster ab. Nick Austria sendet künftig weiterhin zwischen 6:00 Uhr und 20:15 Uhr Kinderprogramm und von 1:00 Uhr bis 6:00 Uhr Nickelodeon-Klassiker für Nachtschwärmer. Das 24-Stunden-Programm von Comedy Central bleibt in Österreich auf dem gewohnten Sendeplatz erhalten.

Dann ist ab 20:15 und bis 1 Uhr auf dem Sendeplatz von Nick Austria das Programm von Comedy Central zu sehen. Das reguläre Nick-Programm startet um 6 Uhr in der Früh, zwischen 1 und 6 Uhr gibt’s auf dem Sender Klassiker von Nickelodeon zu sehen. Das reguläre Comedy-Central-Programm ist von der Änderung nicht betroffen, dieses ist auch künftig 24 Stunden am Tag zu sehen. Auch in Deutschland ist nach Nick-Sendeschluss seit einigen Monaten Comedy Central zu sehen (DWDL.de berichtete). In Österreich kommt Comedy Central auf rund 0,3 Prozent Marktanteil beim Gesamtpublikum.
