Netflix's live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is set to begin filming this fall in Vancouver, according to blog Hollywood North Buzz.
The adaptation is based on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008.
According to Hollywood North Buzz, Netflix's live-action series, poised to be filming between November 16th, 2021 to May 17th, 2022 "takes place in a fantasy world, home to humans, fantastic animals, and supernatural spirits. Human civilization is divided into three pre-industrialized nations, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, and the Air Nomads, and one industrialized nation, the Fire Nation, capable of manufacturing various kinds of machines. Within each nation, an order of men and women called “Benders” have the ability to manipulate their native element.
The project is said to have the working title of Trade Winds.
"These Bending arts combine a certain style of martial arts and elemental mysticism. The Bending types are Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending. In each generation, one person is capable of Bending all four elements; this is the Avatar, the spirit of the planet manifested in human form. When the Avatar dies, he or she is reincarnated into an unborn baby native in the next nation in the Avatar Cycle, which parallels the seasons: winter for water, spring for earth, summer for fire, and autumn for air. While legend holds that the Avatar must master the elements in order, starting with their native element, this can sometimes be compromised when the situation requires it. Learning to bend the element opposite one’s native element is extremely difficult because opposing Bending arts are based on opposing fighting styles and doctrines."
The co-creators of the original animation, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were originally signed on to oversee the film but left Netflix's adaptation in June 2020 due to creative differences. Netflix's adaptation will see Albert Kim as showrunner, and Dan Lin, Ryan Halprin and Lindsey Liberatore as producers, according to Hollywood North Buzz.
Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender emerged from its three-season run (61 episodes), from February 2005 to July 2008, as one of the most beloved animated properties in history. Honored with a Peabody Award and Primetime Emmy, along with multiple Annie Awards and Genesis Awards, the series follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.
In addition to the series’ success, the property has spawned into several bestselling book series, which continue to roll out new original stories. The graphic novel series most recently spent two months on the New York Times Graphic Books Bestseller list in 2020, and the young adult novels have spent 22 cumulative weeks on the New York Times Young Adult Bestseller list and have shipped over a quarter million copies. The DVD and Blu-rays are also incredibly successful, with the “Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Series” generating nearly $38MM in retail sales since its 2015 release.
In April 2012, Nickelodeon launched the follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, which ran for four seasons (52 episodes). Like Avatar, the property has translated into a successful ongoing graphic novel series written by TV series co-creator DiMartino. The first graphic novel storyline, Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, has captured various Top 10 sales spots across children’s fiction, YA science fiction, and graphic novel categories since its debut in 2017. The epic story of The Legend of Korra, set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender 70 years later, follows the journey of Avatar Korra, a 17-year-old girl striving to live up to the legacy of her predecessor Avatar Aang, while using her mastery of all four elements to confront political and spiritual unrest in a modernizing world.
Avatar: The Last Airbender also spawned a live-action movie adaptation in 2010, directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
In February of this year, ViacomCBS announced the development of an animated Avatar movie made by a new division of Nickelodeon called Avatar Studios, of which DiMartino and Konietzko are co-chief officers. The Netflix adaptation won't fall under the banner, however.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is more than just Smash with Nicktoons, its developers say

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is an upcoming Smash-like game that, despite its licensed nature, already sounds like an absolutely legit fighting game. Not only do the lead developers have experience making their own popular platform fighter, but they’re also looking into implementing rollback netcode for an optimal online experience. Kotaku recently spoke with folks at Ludosity, the studio behind All-Star Brawl, about their hopes for both its casual and competitive future.
Ludosity may not be a household name, but it’s found itself thrust into the spotlight thanks to the reveal of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl earlier this week. The studio, which is based in Sweden, was founded over ten years ago and maintains a staff of less than a dozen people. Ludosity released several games in that decade, most notably 2018’s Slap City, a platform fighter in the vein of Super Smash Bros. that’s even been featured at major Smash community tournaments.
“Shortly after the success of Slap City, we were approached by Nickelodeon,” Ludosity CEO Joel Nystrรถm told Kotaku via email. “At first I didn’t think it was for real. You get a lot of weird emails and deals on a weekly basis, so at first I dismissed it as spam!”
The small studio eventually realized it wasn’t being scammed and got in touch with Nickelodeon, which laid out its plans for a platform fighter. Ludosity developed a demo, and by early 2020, the devs were in production on Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl alongside co-developer Fair Play Labs out of Costa Rica and publisher GameMill Entertainment, the latter of which previously partnered with Nickelodeon to release Nickelodeon Kart Racers and Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix.
When the game was announced, the niche community of competitive fighting game players immediately realized the enormity of Ludosity’s involvement. Here was a group of people who had already shown intimate knowledge and familiarity with making a competent platform fighter, and they were being put in charge of making a game featuring characters from classic cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants, Hey Arnold!, and Rugrats. It was almost too good to be true.
Folks descended on Ludosity’s official Discord channel following the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl reveal to inundate the developers with questions about the upcoming game. And they were more than happy to oblige, letting slip little details about the project’s gameplay mechanics and use of rollback netcode.

Elias “sinxtanx” Forslind, the chief designer who joined Nystrรถm in answering our questions, was the most vocal; he explained that the team was drawing inspiration from both Smash and their previous work on Slap City to imbue the release with aspects that would appeal to those familiar with playing those games at every level.
“If Slap City played a bit like the old Smash games, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl definitely plays like its own thing,” Forslind explained.
It's fair to say that the announcement of Nickelodeon making a competitive fighting game took a fair few by surprise - a kids network having a game featuring characters battle each other (although there are games such as Shrek SuperSlam). However, Ludosity explained to Kotaku that Nickelodeon is totally on board with the game.
“Nickelodeon is absolutely on board with having the game be competitively viable,” Nystrรถm said. “That’s been in the conversation from the start. That’s why they came to us.”
“My approach to the casual/competitive question is the same as with Slap City,” Forslind added, responding to a follow-up question about the balancing act between the two. “When you make a game fun to play, anyone can have fun with it. This is very good for me, since I don’t have the mad skills like competitive players, but I can still greatly enjoy casual free-for-all matches in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.”
Nickelodeon has also given the studio a surprising amount of freedom in developing Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, so much so that the developers say very few of their suggestions have been nixed.
Every character’s moveset and fighting style, from SpongeBob SquarePants’ Patrick Star to Ren & Stimpy’s Powdered Toast Man, came entirely from the Ludosity team. If it has to do with gameplay at all, Nystrรถm said, it was probably an idea that originated with them. And while they’re obviously not ready to talk about final roster size or DLC plans (“There is talk” about post-release support, Kotaku told.), Ludosity has even been able to provide input on character selection. It’s both surprising and encouraging that Nickelodeon is open to this kind of collaboration, a dynamic that bodes well for the success of the game outside its built-in licensed potential.
Despite being months away from release, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl already has a lot on its cartoon-y shoulders. Not only is it a promotional vehicle for a ton of classic, beloved Nicktoons but also the added stress of appealing to a group of people for whom it seems nothing is ever good enough in the competitive fighting game scene.
While still blown away by the overwhelmingly positive reception earlier this week, the folks at Ludosity seem to be taking the attention in stride. The developers are still interacting with the burgeoning Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl community on Discord—they had to open a new channel to avoid the studio’s original space being overwhelmed with talk about the new game—and have a very clear picture of what they hope to achieve with this ambitious project.
“Nigel Thornberry edge guarding is a goal all to itself,” Forslind joked, referring to the Wild Thornberrys character’s status as an internet meme, before adding: “I hope this game can also inspire others to keep experimenting with the platform fighter genre. It’s more than 20 years old now, but it still feels like a young genre, with lots of potential.”
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will be released this fall on the PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Click here for more information.
