'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Announces Earth Day Weekend Celebration, Inc. 'New Fan-Led Original Discussion Series'

The official Avatar: The Last Airbender YouTube channel has just announced plans to host an Earth Day Weekend celebration!


This 3-day event will feature earth-shattering original videos, a live stream every day, and a new, fan-led original discussion series exclusively on the channel. Following the live-streamed premiere of the new series, it'll be made available on the channel permanently soon after.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender YouTube channel's Earth Day Weekend celebration kicks off on Earth Day, April 22. "Get ready! Toph's already on her way!" Nickelodeon said in their announcement.

Nickelodeon issued a casting call last September looking for fans to take part in a new short-form series. It's currently unknown whether this is the same project.

Fan website Avatar News has noted some interesting activity from the Avatar voice cast. Janet Varney, who voiced Korra in the sequel, The Legend of Korra, recently mentioned she’s working on a “special” project with Nickelodeon that “should be announced soon”. However, there’s technically no guarantee it’s even Avatar-related.

Olivia Hack, who voiced Ty Lee, posted about a project that will excite "older fans." Of course, all of these performers have a slate of projects under their belts, so these posts could be promoting unrelated projects.

Update (4/17) - Polygon reached out to Nickelodeon for clarification, and we have been told to expect a trailer for the new series and a formal announcement from the company on Monday, April 19.

Avatar has seen a resurgence in popularity in the past few months after both Last Airbender and Legend of Korra hit Paramount+ and Netflix. It turns out that nostalgic millennials, a global quarantine, and a light-hearted binge are a perfect combination. Nickelodeon took notice, announcing the formation of Avatar Studios, a new creative endeavor focused solely on putting out new Avatar content. The original creators are on board, but exactly what characters or stories we can expect to see was left unsaid. Netflix is also developing a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, without the show's original creators.

'Baby Shark’s Big Show!' to Swim onto Nick Jr. UK on Saturday 8th May 2021

ViacomCBS Consumer Products (VCP) has announced the fin-tastic news that Nick Jr. UK & Ireland will fully premiere Baby Shark’s Big Show! on Saturday 8th May 2021 at 9:30am, with new episodes premiering weekends at 9:30am!


The news follows Nick Jr. UK & Ireland treating fans to an early look at the brand new animated preschool series based on the world-famous pop culture phenomenon Baby Shark with the debut of the all new Christmas special “Baby Shark’s Big Fishmas Special” ("All I want for Fishmas") in December 2020.

VCP announced the news in the January 2021 issue of Toy World Magazine:

"Baby Shark officially reigns as the No. 1 most viewed YouTube video of all time. ViacomCBS recognises the sea of opportunity with this IP and its expanding reach through the lens of content and consumer products. In May 2021, a new series, Baby Shark's Big Show, will be arriving on the Nick Jr. channel, much to the delight of pre-schoolers both here in the UK and globally. In the consumer products space, Baby Shark has achieved UK sales growth of+46% between August 2020 vs. August 2019, showing that the IP is a brand that is here to stay.

"The licensing programme for Baby Shark continues to grow, most notably with the expanded line from WowWee (via Jazwares). Clementoni will continue to build on its range, particularly the Soft Clemmy.

"Several exciting new partners are on board for spring/ summer 2021, including Ravensburger, Moose, MV Sports and John Adams. Role-play has been identified as a key opportunity for the property, fitting nicely with settings seen in the new series such as Carnivore Cove and the house where Baby Shark lives, whilst the classic IP look translates seamlessly into wooden toys; a partner to sign here is being explored. From a softlines perspective, a big focus will be on the summer shop for spring/summer 2022. HOLLYWOOD, Calif.–April 16, 2021–Nickelodeon today announced U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry is making an appearance in a brand-new Earth Day special, Nick News: Kids and the Impact of Climate Change, airing Saturday, April 17, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). Hosted by CBS News correspondent Jamie Yuccas, the hour-long special will tackle environmental issues, educate kids on the importance of protecting the planet and empower action through stories of kids and families across the country who are working to address the effects of climate change in their communities.

Kicking off with a primer on the history of Earth Day, Nick News: Kids and the Impact of Climate Change will also feature appearances by Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ tight end Rob Gronkowski, actress Lily Collins, digital creator and actress Liza Koshy, actress and activist Skai Jackson, among others; who will be encouraging kids to do their part to protect the planet, by sharing small but impactful ways they are more eco-conscious in their daily lives.


Nick News: Kids and the Impact of Climate Change continues the important work of giving kids a platform to tell their stories,” said Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, Vice President of News Programming, Nickelodeon and Executive Producer of Nick News. “As we approach another Earth Day, Nick News delves into incredibly timely topics, including the often not addressed issue of environmental racism, sustainability and the global impact of the Paris Climate Agreement; offering an engaging co-viewing opportunity that will serve as a conversation starter for families across the U.S.”

The program will also explore environmental racism introducing viewers to communities that are being besieged by industries that target underserved areas, typically populated by minorities, bringing employment opportunities that often harm the environment and cause health issues for residents.  The segment will include the stories of: Fionia Carlton, a former resident of Duplin County, NC, who had to relocate because she could no longer breathe the contaminated air; Naelyn Pike, an Apache activist from San Carlos, AZ, protecting her tribal land; and Sabirah Mahmud, who lives in a polluted section of Philadelphia, PA.


Additional segments in the special include: a roundtable where kids educate their parents on environmental issues and ways they can make more eco-friendly choices; a lesson on what the Paris Climate Agreement is and explanation of terms like carbon footprint and greenhouse gases; and the results of a climate quiz about environmental issues conducted on www.nickplay.com, presented by guest kid reporter Rory Hu.

Following the premiere, Nick News: Kids and the Impact of Climate Change will encore across Nickelodeon, Nicktoons and TeenNick on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, and will also be available on www.nickhelps.com.

Nickelodeon will premiere Nick News: Kids & The Impact of Climate Change, a brand new hour-long Nick News special looking at the effects climate change has on the planet, on Saturday, April 17 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

In additional news, Bella, Noah and Liam Syren from the "Zero Waste Family" will be making a special Earth Day appearance on Nickelodeon. The family made a pandemic pledge to live off the land in Talmadge. The family of five, including parents Fredrika and James, are growing nearly 60 different types of vegetables, fruits and berries. Talking about his friends seeing him on TV, 10-year-old Noah said "[y]eah, except my hair is long so they sort of don't recognize me."

Climate change TV show features Maui girl

A Maui girl and her father will voice their concerns about the health of the ocean ecosystem on a national TV broadcast for Earth Day.

Abby Rogers, a fifth grader at King Kamehameha III Elementary School in Lahaina, and her father, Andrew Rogers, general manager of the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, will appear on the special “Nick News: Kids and the Impact of Climate Change,” airing at 6 p.m. Saturday on Nickelodeon. They discuss the health of coral reefs off Maui as part of a roundtable on climate change.

“My specific segment was where I got to talk about biodiversity in the ocean ecosystem with my dad and how everyone can help,” said Abby, 11, in a phone call from Maui.

Abby said she’s been snorkeling and diving off Maui for about two years — Kapalua Bay and off Mala Wharf in Honolua Bay are her favorite spots —and has noticed healthy and bleached, unhealthy reefs.

“It’s pretty incredible to see how it can be different,” said Abby, who is seen snorkeling in the Nickelodeon special. “Just being able to see this has made me want to make an impact on the world.”

Abby got interested in the health of coral reefs after reading an article about the Coral Reef Alliance, a nonprofit that helps reefs adapt to climate change. She came to the attention of Nickelodeon through her work as a reporter for Time for Kids, a childrens’ journal run by Time magazine.

Andrew Rogers said he is especially proud that Abby’s work will influence other children. “It kind of reminds you that you can go back to a grassroots campaign and make a difference just one person at a time,” he said.
