Tom Kenny & Rodger Bumpass Relish The 'Comfort Food' Aspect Of 'SpongeBob SquarePants'
Tom Kenny and Rodger Bumpass reveal their first responses to seeing SpongeBob SquarePants in CGI, and how it won them over.
During a roundtable interview with CBR, SpongeBob SquarePants cast members Tom Kenny (SpongeBob) and Rodger Bumpass (Squidward) talked about their initial reaction to the CGI-look of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge on the Run, how they and series creator Stephen Hillenburg were won over, and what's at the heart of the franchise — regardless of the media it's presented in.
SpongeBob SquarePants premiered in 1999, making the twenty-plus-year-old show one of the longest-running programs in modern animation. Along the way, the series has morphed in unique and exciting ways, inspiring a Tony-winning Broadway musical, multiple films and the upcoming prequel series Kamp Koral. The latter mimics the CGI-animation style that was incorporated for parts of the 2015 film SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out Of Water, which is a departure from the look of the original series. However, that shift in design hasn't led to a radical altering of the show's style of comedy and character, which Kenny was quick to point out.
As Kenny explained, the heart of the franchise is that "it all goes to character. Character, character, character, and as long as the characters are who they are, and are true to their blueprint, because you don't want cartoon characters to change, really. You don't want SpongeBob to have an arc. You don't want Squidward to have an arc. 'Wow, he's so different in this movie than he was in the third one. Wow.' Cartoon characters stay the same, you know what I mean? Charlie Brown is always Charlie Brown, that's what's comforting about it. Bugs Bunny's always Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck's always Daffy Duck, Popeye the Sailor Man is always Popeye the Sailor Man. There's not like a, "Maybe I'll give up spinach and not punch people anymore." Yeah. You don't want Popeye to do that. It's the comfort food aspect."
Kenny even admitted that the animation shift to CGI initially caught him, some of his fellow-castmembers, and even series creator Stephen Hillenburg by surprise. "[Hillenburg] and we were a little unsure about the CGI thing, too. SpongeBob is such a determinedly 2D classic animated looking show." But their wariness was calmed by the producers of the new series, who were also responsible for the still-running original series. "They were able to find a way to take that CGI and lend it the same squashy, stretchy, kinetic, the craziness of 2D, classic animation. That was a puzzle they worked really, really hard to figure out, and I think are still learning on Kamp Koral. I think it's fun to have to learn new tricks when you've been doing something for a while, so it doesn't become stale."
Looking back at his own first impressions, Bumpass agreed that "the animation change... that might be a little jarring at first. I find it the more I see it, the more I like it. And it dovetails also with our characters. We're showing them fresh and new, in a different age, in a different environment. You're being introduced to new aspects of the entire show, both character-wise and overall presentation-wise. So if my perception is any indication, it will be nicely adjusted to by anybody watching the show, both the CG and the characters."
For Kenny, the response to the new show's style was similar to his feelings when the Broadway musical adaption was announced. "We had the same trepidation about the Broadway show, going to see the Broadway show like, "wow. SpongeBob doesn't happen in the real world — the physicality of the real world. Can you take what SpongeBob is and put it on a stage with human beings?' And that's another code that they managed to crack, another Rubik's Cube that they managed to solve brilliantly, and put any reservations we had to rest. Yeah. They're good at figuring this stuff out."
Bumpass specifically cited the way the live-action show adapted Squidward's design as part of his view on taking the original series and finding ways to successfully adapt it. "A great example of them solving that problem was Squidward's character on stage, because in the cartoon, we make him anthropomorphic by combining two legs to make two legs. In the live-action, you've got to take a real human being and turn him into a multi-legged person, and their costume design was absolutely perfect like that, but it's a great example of how they've solved this dilemma."
Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years stars Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy, Mr. Lawrence as Plankton, Mary Jo Catlett as Mrs. Puff, Jill Talley as Karen, Lori Alan as Pearl, Carlos Alazraqui as Nobby and Kate Higgins as Narlene. The SpongeBob SquarePants prequel will premiere on Paramount+ on Mar. 4 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will make its debut on Premium Video-On-Demand (PVOD) & Paramount+, ViacomCBS’ highly anticipated global streaming service, on Mar. 4.

'iCarly' Star Jennette McCurdy Confirms She's Quit Acting and Reveals That She's 'Embarrassed' by Her Roles
During her latest podcast episode, iCarly alum Jennette McCurdy said she doesn't foresee ever acting again and shared, "I resent my career in a lot of ways."

Although iCarly fans continue holding out hope that Jennette McCurdy will change her mind and return for the show's upcoming revival, they'd be well-advised not to hold their breath.
Jennette, who now hosts the podcast Empty Inside, played Sam Puckett for six seasons on the beloved Nickelodeon show that signed off in 2012, and she later reprised the role on Sam & Cat opposite Ariana Grande. During her recent podcast interview with Anna Faris, Jennette confirmed she considers herself done with acting, and revealed she is not particularly proud of her previous shows.
"I quit a few years ago to try my hand and writing and directing—it's going great," she said with a self-deprecating laugh. "I quit a few years ago because I initially didn't want to do it. My mom put me in it when I was 6 and by sort of age, I guess, 10 or 11, I was the main financial support for my family. My family didn't have a lot of money, and this was the way out, which I actually think was helpful in driving me to some degree of success."
Jennette, 28, explained that "always, always, always, acting was difficult for me," as she had a tough time dealing with nerves during auditions.
Nickelodeon Network/Schneider's Bakery/Kobal/Shutterstock |
"Once I started to get the nerves under control was when I started to actually get some traction, but I ultimately quit after my mom passed away because with her death kind of died a lot of her ideas for my life, and that was its own journey, and a difficult one for sure," she shared.
Anna asked if she would ever return to acting, and indeed, many fans hoped Jennette would reunite with Miranda Cosgrove and other iCarly cast members on the upcoming revival. Jennette responded that she returned as a thespian for her one-woman show I'm Glad My Mom Died, which debuted in Los Angeles in February 2020 and explored her mom's 2013 death from cancer, but that she considers it a one-off.
"I wrote this one-woman show, and I performed that, and I really did not want to because of the nerves,'" she recalled. "Because of feeling like I don't want to f--king act anymore, 'I'm done.' So I did it just for that show, but I think that one-woman show would be the most of it."
Jennette later went into detail about the embarrassment she felt regarding the type of projects she landed.
"My experience with acting is, I'm so ashamed of the parts I've done in the past," she said. "I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing. I did the shows that I was on from like 13 to 21, and by 15, I was already embarrassed. My friends at 15, they're not like, 'Oh, cool, you're on this Nickelodeon show.' It was embarrassing. And I imagine there's a very different experience to be had with acting if you're proud of your roles, and if you feel fulfilled by them."
She also recounted a painful moment from age 10 when her mom was giving Jennette's agent a hard time after the then child-star didn't book a role in the 2005 film Because of Winn-Dixie that ended up starring AnnaSophia Robb.
"My agent, I literally hear her on speaker phone go, 'They want an ethereal beauty. Jennette is not an ethereal beauty. She is homely. She reads homely,'" the star said. "And I was like, OK, guess I read homely."
As for whether she could ever imagine returning to acting, Jennette said it may depend on getting an opportunity to collaborate with a director she "really admired." She continued, "I feel like I have a point of view, and I have a vision. We'll see where things are in a few years."
“But just because of my past and the auditions that would come across my eyes, I was like OK well this is what the industry sees me as and I don’t want to do that.”
McCurdy also questioned Faris about her own entrance into acting, and the former Mom star explained that her interest began at an early age when her mother enrolled her in "imagination" classes. From there, Faris took up acting in community theater.
"I loved acting, but it wasn't quite that clear in any way. I don't remember saying 'This is what I want to do,'" Faris explained.
The House Bunny actor furthered that acting became "my identity outside of school," and considered herself fortunate that she was able to decide on her own to quit college. "By that point, my parents had been out of my career for quite a long time. I can't imagine though, that must have been really difficult," she said of McCurdy's personal experience. "That's a whole different journey than I was on."
Ultimately, McCurdy said she believes acting during her transformative years stunted her ability to develop her own emotions at the time.
"For me, I kind of had my own emotions on the back burner as a kid. I think it was really detrimental to my own emotional wellbeing because this character's emotions was the priority. Also I was always playing the sad, crying thing," she said.
Faris reflected on industry difficulties, but eventually concluded she was starting to feel the acting “itch” again. She asked if McCurdy has ever felt rewarded by a character she played.
“I’m so ashamed of the parts I’ve done in the past,” McCurdy said. “I get that this answer is super unlikable.”
McCurdy has previously spoken about her struggle with anorexia and bulimia, which began at just 11 years old and persisted for 13 years. Insiders have also speculated that her time on set may have been troubled.
The history of McCurdy’s statements on her time at the kid-friendly network indicate the young actor was not valued in the same way as some of her close costars, namely the “7 Rings” singer who was first discovered at Nickelodeon. In 2014, McCurdy boycott the Kid’s Choice Awards, hinting that a salary dispute with Sam & Cat producers was the reason.

Jennette McCurdy Attacked Online for Saying She’s Ashamed of Her Acting Career
Jennette McCurdy disappointed some of her fans after she made the shocking revelation that she was ashamed of her acting career and that she’s done being an actor, most likely confirming that she won't be part of Paramount+'s upcoming iCarly revival.
JB Lacroix/WireImage |
Despite not updating her Instagram account recently, many of her "fans" quickly left messages on McCurdy’s latest post on the platform after learning about her decision to quit acting for good. (*yes, I put fans in quote marks, because real fans would respect her opinion).
Most of them cheered her on for doing such a bold move and also sent her well-wishes. However, a number also slammed the 28-year-old celebrity after saying that she’s embarrassed by her roles in the past. McCurdy is best known for playing Sam Puckett on Nickelodeon’s iCarly and the spin-off series Sam & Cat.
“Embarrassed?? Why??!! You started being an actress and making good money. Some dream to have that chance. You are ungrateful! Being an actress is about being versatile. You started. You could have had different new roles,” one user commented on McCurdy’s photo of her rocking a yellow top and blue jeans while sitting on the sidewalk.
“Dumbest move you’ve made so far. The money alone could have propelled any project you ever wanted. Hell I’d never watched or watch that show but f—k!!!!! Do you not like money? Is that the problem. Such a dumb move omg why?” another wrote.
“You don’t need to feel ashamed of your past roles. Yes, they were in a cheesy kids show. So what? Millions of people watched it. If you died tomorrow, you would have done more than 90% of this planet. As for acting, I don’t get why you quit. Not many people get the opportunity you have. Fight through the nerves and book some shows. If you really want to leave a legacy, acting will be your path and not a podcast,” a third user opined.
McCurdy recently confessed in a recent episode of her Empty Inside podcast that she’s not pleased with her acting career. In the same episode, in which she interviews fellow actor Anna Faris (Mom), she confirmed that she won’t be back as Sam in the highly anticipated “iCarly” reboot as she has officially quit acting.
“My experience with acting is, I’m so ashamed of the parts I’ve done in the past. I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing.”
“I did the shows that I was on from like 13 to 21, and by 15, I was already embarrassed. My friends at 15, they’re not like, ‘Oh, cool, you’re on this Nickelodeon show.’ It was embarrassing. And I imagine there’s a very different experience to be had with acting if you’re proud of your roles, and if you feel fulfilled by them,” McCurdy added.
McCurdy then disclosed to her episode guest Faris that she quit acting “a few years ago because I initially didn’t want to do it.” She said it was her late mom who encouraged her to do acting at age 6, and it helped her achieve “some degree of success” on top of sustaining her family financially. But now she is done with it.
Though McCurdy no longer wants to work in front of the camera, she is still pretty much a part of the entertainment industry. Aside from her podcast, she’s currently more focused on doing more writing and directing work.

The New Amazon App Icon Looks Hilariously Like Avatar Aang
Amazon is no stranger to controversy, and it seems the online retailer has landed on more toes after trying to appease users of its latest gaff. If you did not know, Amazon has given its mobile app icon a makeover of sorts to kick-off 2021. The whole design change was blasted after users questioned whether the makeover made reference to Adolf Hitler, so the app's revised image was just put out...
Credit: ComicBook.com. |
And well, it seems things aren't quite right with fans. After all, the new design is not sitting well with fans, and that is because the mobile app reminds most of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
As you can see in the slides below, netizens have taken to Twitter to discuss Amazon and its unintentional reference to Avatar. The viral comparison all comes down to Aang and his iconic head tattoo. Fans say Amazon's tan-and-blue color scheme looks like an impressionistic take on Aang given its placement and shape. And after seeing the comparison myself, well - this is pretty hard to unsee.
Obviously, Amazon did not mean to evoke Avatar with its app redesign, although Airbending would be an awesome way to deliver packages, but the Internet is going to do what it will. It doesn't help that the Nickelodeon series is fresh on the minds of fans. It was made official last month that Avatar will return to screen thanks to a push from ViacomCBS. The show's original creators have been tasked with heading up Avatar Studios, a brand dedicated to exploring new stories set within the franchise. So if you want to see Aang again and for real this time, that opportunity will be here before too long!
What do you make of this hilarious Avatar swap? Did you notice the similarities here or...? Share your thoughts with me in the comments section below!
