Steve Wasn't The Only Blue's Clues Character To Abruptly Leave | The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

It's probably a good thing he didn't have any more public appearances. #Colbert #Comedy #ColdOpens

SHUT UP, YOU’RE THE ONE CRYING

Many millennial (and if I’m being honest, Gen X) eyes were blurry this week after Steve Burns, the original host of Nickelodeon’s “Blue’s Clues,” posted a video marking the beloved show’s 25th anniversary. In the video, Burns addressed his abrupt exit after five seasons and vowed, “After all these years, I never forgot you. Ever.” SHUT UP, YOU’RE THE ONE WHO’S CRYING.

So on Thursday’s episode of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert took a few minutes to talk about the video and the reactions from people who were kids at the time. And naturally, while playing Burns’ video for “The Late Show” audiences, he became increasingly emotional about it. That’s when a friend came out to comfort him: Burns himself.

First, as Colbert played the clip and commented on it, he pretended he was too old and mature to care about the video. Obviously that wasn’t really the case, and after it ended, the pretense fell apart.

“Uh, nice message and everything, but uh, that show was for my kids, and I am a man, and by definition I feel nothing,” Colbert said while his eyes glistened.

“Are you sure about that, Stephen?” Burns said, after suddenly appearing stage right.

“Steve from ‘Blue’s Clues,’ who I’m not emotionally invested in? What are you doing here?” Colbert replied.

Burns then explained, “I just came by and wanted to see if you were OK. You seem kind of upset, and I just wanted to know if maybe you wanted a hug. I mean, that’s what friends do, right?”

“I mean, if you need one or whatever,” Colbert said. Then they hugged and SHUT UP, THIS WAS AWESOME, NO I AM NOT EMOTIONAL.

Stephen Colbert gets hug from ex Blue's Clues host we all needed after watching that touching video

Bring on the waterworks... again.

The tears just keep on coming this week.

Steve Burns, who played original Blue's Clues host Steve on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. starting in 1996, showed up on CBS' The Late Show to give Stephen Colbert a hug after the late-night personality got all choked up watching Burns' touching video message.

Burns returned this week as Steve to address Millennial Blue's Clues fans, who are now all grown up, about his departure from the show in 2002 with the episode "Steve Goes to College." Burns would appear on a few more episodes, but this was the moment in the show when the host explained to his kid viewers that his brother Joe would be their new best friend as he went off to continue his education.

"Look at all you have done and all you have accomplished in all that time," he said. "And it's just… it's just so amazing, right? I mean, we started out with clues and now it's what? Student loans, and jobs, and families, and some of that has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know."

"I guess I just wanted to say," he concluded, "that after all these years I never forgot you. Ever. And I'm super glad we're still friends…"

Colbert acted out a crying fit when playing the video for his audience, but there was a genuine moment among the jokes.

"Although I was aware of the show because of my kids, those kids are all grown up and moved away now," he said. "So, obviously I have no emotional investment in Steve."

Burns then appeared on stage to give Colbert a much-needed hug.

"You seem kind of upset and I just wanted to know if maybe you wanted a hug," he said. "I mean, that's what friends do, right?"

'Blues Clues' Original Host Leaves Stephen Colbert a Weeping Mess on 'The Late Show'

It's been nearly 20 years since Steve Burns from Nickelodeon's beloved Blue's Clues has been on the scene. But this week, he surprised fans by taking over the network's Twitter account with his signature striped shirt in tow in a video. "I'm super glad we're still friends," Burns said while standing in front of the classic screen.

He continued: "I mean, we started out with clues, and now, it's what? Student loans and jobs and families? And some of it has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know. I wanted to tell you that I really couldn't have done all of that without your help...I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you, ever."

Days later, he stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to give Colbert a hug. Both triggered all the mushy feelings from viewers, and even Colbert. While Burns hasn't been on Nickelodeon, he passed the baton to his character's younger brother Joe (Donovan Patton) in 2002 amid his exit from the show. [Burns] later revealed that he tried to pursue a career in another realm of entertainment.

"People think I left the show to pursue a music career. That didn't happen at all," he said in a 2006 interview with The Huffington Post. "I left the show because it was just simply time to go. I was pretty much playing a boyish, older-brotherish kind of character on the show. I was getting older; I was losing my hair; a lot of the original gangsters on the show, like the people who created it, were all moving on to other careers. It just felt like time. I just had a gut feeling like it was time to go."

[Burns] is now a producer for Blue's Clues & You! and continued consulting on Blue's Clues, assisting the casting department to hire Joshua Dela Cruz, who plays Steve and Joe's cousin on the show. Social media users also can't get enough of seeing Burns after so long.

Former Blue’s Clues Host Steve Burns Surprises an Emotional Stephen Colbert

Earlier this week, Burns went viral for addressing viewers in a video celebrating the popular Nickelodeon show’s 25th anniversary.

Former Blues Clues Host Steve Burns Surprises an Emotional Stephen Colbert

These days, apparently, no one is exempt from the healing powers of a Blue’s Clues reference. Earlier this week, the Nickelodeon hit’s original host, Steve Burns, went viral after appearing in a video to honor the show’s 25th anniversary. Following his nostalgic tribute to millennial viewers, Stephen Colbert welcomed Burns for an emotional appearance on Thursday’s episode of The Late Show.

“Folks, that soft sound you’ve been hearing everywhere this week is the internet weeping because Steve, the original host of the children’s show Blue’s Clues, dropped a video message to millennials,” Colbert began. He then absolved himself of any deep connection to the series. “Now, I was grown up in the late ’90s. Although I was aware of the show because of my kids, those kids are all grown up and moved away now,” Colbert explained. “So obviously, I have no emotional investment in Steve.”

Colbert then live-reacted to the viral clip, in which Burns told fans: “I’m super glad we’re still friends.” The Nickelodeon star also detailed his 2002 exit from Blue’s Clues, in which his character left for college. “One day I was like, ‘Oh hey, guess what, big news, I’m leaving. This is my brother Joe, he’s your new best friend. And then I got on a bus and I left,” Burns recalled. “And we didn’t see each other for like a really long time. Can we just talk about that?”

Burns then commended his viewers for the progress they’ve made over the ensuing decades. “Look at all you have done, and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it’s just, it’s just so amazing, right?” Burns continued.

“I have grown a lot. I’m on network now,” Colbert quipped in response.

“We started out with clues and now it’s what? Student loans, and jobs, and families. And some of it has been kind of hard, you know?” Burns concluded. “I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you, ever.”

Colbert struggled to keep his composure when assessing the video. “Um, you know, nice message and everything, but the show is for my kids and I am a man and—by definition—I feel nothing,” he said, prompting an unexpected visitor. “Are you sure about that, Stephen?” Burns himself asked, walking onstage to applause.

“I just came by. I wanted to see if you were okay,” Burns continued. “You seemed kind of upset, and I just wanted to know if maybe you wanted a hug? I mean, that’s what friends do, right?” Colbert then shrugged. “I mean if you need one, or whatever,” he said, before embracing Burns.

The duo exited the stage after Colbert found—surprise—a blue-hued clue behind his desk. “Wow! Great job, Stephen. Let’s go tell Blue!” Burns said, recreating his signature one-liner with ease. What’s that? Oh, there’s just something in my eye.
