Rob Renzetti Reveals He Once Pitched Plans for 'My Life As A Teenage Robot' Toys

Creator Rob Renzetti has revealed that he once planned to release toys based on his popular noughties Nickelodeon animated series, My Life As A Teenage Robot! However, one of the reasons the toys never came to fruition was due to the toy aisles being super segregated by gender.

When a fan asked Renzetti on Twitter whether he had planned My Life As A Teenage Robot toys, the creator replied: "My pitch for #mlaatr toys was 'Transformers for Girls' Had no idea how misguided that was till I started working with [My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic creator Lauren Faust] on #mlp The toy biz was (still is?) super segregated by gender. There are toys for boys and toys for girls and never the two shall meet."

My Life As A Teenage Robot was created by Renzetti and premiered on August 1st, 2003. Set in the fictional town of Tremorton, the series follows the adventures of a robot girl named XJ-9, or Jenny Wakeman, as she prefers to be called, who attempts to juggle her duties of protecting Earth while trying to live a normal human life as a teenager. MLAATR ran for 62 episodes over three seasons, airing its finale in May 2009, winning two Emmy awards and garnering an additional nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. The series was produced by Frederator Studios in association with Nickelodeon Animation Studios. Among the voice actors in the show was Moira "Mo" Quirk, the referee in Nickelodeon GUTS and Global Guts.

Although we never got to see My Life As A Teenage Robot toys whist on air, merchandise based on the show is finally being released, more than 10 years after the show's finale aired! Zen Monkey Studios released a few MLAATR pin badges for fans earlier this year.

Renzetti pitched the series to Frederator Studios' animated shorts showcase Oh Yeah! Cartoons and a pilot titled "My Neighbor is a Teenage Robot", which aired on January 5, 1999.
