“Star Trek: Prodigy” Launches on Paramount+ in the U.S. This Fall
August 31, 2021 – Paramount+, the streaming service from ViacomCBS, today unveiled the main title sequence for the upcoming all-new animated kids’ series STAR TREK: PRODIGY, featuring a theme scored by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino. First look images of the series’ main villains, The Diviner (voiced by John Noble) and Drednok (voiced by Jimmi Simpson), also made their debut. The main title sequence and first-look images were revealed by STAR TREK: PRODIGY executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman during Paramount+’s virtual Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation.
The PRODIGY theme is composed by Giacchino, and the series music is by Nami Melumad (“An American Pickle,” “Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond,” “Absentia”).
“I am excited that I had the opportunity to write the main theme for Kevin and Dan’s latest project, and as always am thrilled to be a part of the ‘Star Trek’ family,” said Michael Giacchino. “I’m especially looking forward to everyone hearing the incredible work of composer Nami Melumad, who will take the reins of scoring the episodes. Not only is she extremely talented, she is a true ‘Star Trek’ fan.”
Produced by the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions, STAR TREK: PRODIGY will premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S. this fall.

Developed by Emmy® Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (“Trollhunters” and “Ninjago”), the CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first “Star Trek” series aimed at younger audiences, and will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the “Star Trek” franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Star Trek: Prodigy’s opening sequence includes gorgeous visuals of the USS Protostar flying through space — and showing off a number of wild starship maneuvers thanks to its experimental technology.
While Giacchino took on the task of scoring the Star Trek: Prodigy theme, as he notes, the rest of the series will feature musical compositions by Nami Melumad.
The new title sequence features not only the Protostar’s wild new propulsion action — including the deployment of a third engine from its secondary hull, and an inverted nacelle position for what seems to be a kind of slipstream technology — the starship also rockets around larger-than-life representations of the Prodigy cast, both heroes and villains.
To introduce the world of Star Trek to a new generation of Trekkies, Star Trek: Prodigy enlisted the help of 24th century Starfleet officer Kathryn Janeway and original actor Kate Mulgrew.
“I am delighted to be back playing her, I love her. When a character defines a part of you life, you are in turn deeply grateful, which I am,” Mulgrew said during Paramount+’s TCA presentation on Tuesday. “She has never left me and I am thrileld to be back and to be introducing this to children,
During the TCA panel, EPs Kevin and Dan Hageman teased the characters who will inhabit the latest installment of the Star Trek franchise, which will premiere later this year. The duo teased the relationship between Simpson’s Drednok and Noble’s The Diviner, along with the villains’ motivations.
When asked about the decision to begin a new chapter of Star Trek just for kids, executive producer Alex Kurtzman said there was an opportunity to bring the franchise’s universal message of transformation to new significance.
“Star Trek is about so many things that are formative: the idea that our best selves will emerge in the future, the idea that our better angels will lead us to an optimistic place where all the things that divide us now are gone, in the rear-view mirror,” he said. “What I love so much about Star Trek is that each generation that finds it keeps finding that message again and again.”

The opening sequence — which you can view above — is classic Star Trek, as the show’s main ship, the USS Protostar, zooms around the mysterious Delta quadrant. In the series, a group of young aliens discover an abandoned Federation ship, and along with a training hologram of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), they decide to explore the galaxy.
Naturally, along the way they run into some trouble, courtesy of The Diviner (Noble) and his second in command, Drednok (Simpson). And they’re not the only old friends who potentially might show up. As Lower Decks showrunner Mike McMahan previously teased to Decider, the show has several “elegant” ways of looping in a previous Star Trek series set in the Delta quadrant: Star Trek: Voyager.
Back to the opening sequence, which clearly shows off the ships name, and number (NX-76884), which don’t match up to any previous ship in canon, if you’re looking for clues about its origin.
