The musical is the culmination of the Summer Intensive Theatre Camp, an 8-week camp of youth between the ages of 5 to 18 safely learning and rehearsing together.
Bikini Bottom is in Honolulu this week as The Hawaii Theatre Center and the Pacific Academy of Performing Arts present Nickelodeon's SpongeBob the Musical! And you can watch it from the comfort of your home.
Production director John-Paul Tai and Colton Cameros, a 9th grader from Kamehameha Schools who plays Spongebob Squarepants, joined Good Morning Hawaii to talk about the production which runs through July 25th. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and concerns, viewers can watch a livestream of the show.
The musical is the culmination of the Pacific Academy of Performing Arts Summer Intensive Theatre Camp, an 8-week camp of youth between the ages of 5 to 18 safely learning and rehearsing the musical together.

Students at Pacific Academy of Performing Arts Present: 'The SpongeBob Musical'

The iconic crew of SpongeBob Squarepants and his friends in the fictional town of Bikini Bottom will be in Hawaiʻi with an assortment of catchy tunes and colorful costumes.
This summer, the Pacific Academy of Performing Arts will be producing “The SpongeBob Musical.”
This is the first time the musical will be playing in Hawaiʻi — and performed entirely by children — from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The costumes and sets are made by the dedicated parents and alumni of the theater group. They also did beach cleanups and recycled the trash into props, part of a project complicated by the coronavirus.
"This year we started off completely on Zoom. The second week we started integrating so it was half the cast on Zoom and half the cast in person," said John-Paul Tai, director and choreographer of the musical.
"We alternated rehearsal processes like that until we were able to secure Koʻolau Ballrooms first to have that space where we can be safe together but also be able to rehearse together. And of course the amazing venue here. Once we were able to move in, all the pieces started coming together," he explained.
The cast will be performing at the Hawaiʻi Theatre, but the audience will watch a live stream.
The story opens with the Bikini Bottom community having only two days to live before the expected explosion of Mt. Humongous. The musical touches on some pressing social topics such as racism and scientific skepticism, while keeping the goofiness of the cartoon.
Orion Silva plays Patrick Star, SpongeBob’s best friend.
"There’s emotion, there’s story, and there’s a heartbreaking moment you don’t expect because it’s just a sponge, and a star, and a squirrel — I mean I wouldn’t trust them to save the world either," Silva said.
"But when it comes down to it, you really forget the whole kid cartoonish thing, and it feels real and you get locked in there," he told Hawaiʻi Public Radio.
With musical numbers written by artists such as David Bowie and Cyndi Lauper, this show can be enjoyed by children and adults.
“The SpongeBob Musical” will be live streamed through July 25.

Hawaii Theatre Hosts Popular Live Stream Musical For Families
Honolulu (KHON2) – The Pacific Academy of Performing Arts Program (PAPA) is celebrating their 15th anniversary at Hawaii Theatre with a well-known musical the whole family will enjoy.
With 15 years dedicated to teaching Hawaii’s youth theatre, the Pacific Academy of Performing Arts is hosting their annual summer showcase at Hawaii Theatre.
“We love our partnership with Hawaii Theatre, the staff has been supportive of our local keiki and our program, allowing us to perform in a professional environment. We have been working with them for 5 years and look forward too many more collaborations with Hawaii Theatre and its staff,” says JP Tai, Director of Nickelodeon’s Spongebob The Musical.
In honor of the 15th anniversary of PAPA, Tai and his team directed Nickelodeon’s Spongebob The Musical, which can be viewed via live stream through the Hawaii Theatre’s official website.
Tai says, “Our kids at the Pacific Academy of Performing Arts Program have been working hard to put together this musical. They know their characters and backgrounds which makes performing in a show like this familiar to them.”
Tai feels because the musical has some recognizable characters, the performance from the cast of Nickelodeon’s Spongebob The Musical came naturally.
“I am super excited to play the main role of Spongebob. I grew up watching the cartoons, and to now play him on stage has become a dream come true,” says Colton Cameros, Spongebob in Nickelodeon’s Spongebob The Musical.
With its last weekend approaching at Hawaii Theatre, the cast feels they are grateful for the connections and the theatre knowledge they have gained from this production.
“My favorite part about being a part of this show has got to be the people I met and the work we were able to accomplish as a team. Everyone works hard and the audience will be able to see that in our livestream,” says Alysha Pastor, Sandy Cheeks in Nickelodeon’s Spongebob The Musical.
