CTV Sci-Fi in Canada will be the Canadian of of Nickelodeon and Paramount+'s upcoming CG-animated Star Trek series, Star Trek: Prodigy!
Bell Media, who owns and operates the Canadian TV channel dedicated to science-fiction programming, make the announcement on June 3, ahead of Bell’s Upfront event a week from today, whilst announcing their 2021/2022 line-up of shows for CTV and their specialty channels like CTV Sci-Fi.
In addition to Prodigy, CTV Sci-Fi is also set to add the live-action Strange New Worlds to their line-up as part of the channel's 2021-2022 highlights.
CTV Sci-Fi Channel is already the Canadian home to Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks, so it doesn't really come as a big surprise that the channel will feature the next two shows in the franchise, although Corus Entertainment's YTV and Treehouse have traditionally been the home of new Nickelodeon programming in the country.
No dates were provided for the premiers of either Star Trek show, but it is likely they will arrive at the same time as their USA premieres. Paramount+ has confirmed that Prodigy will debut on the streaming service this year. With Lower Decks arriving on August 12th and Discovery’s fourth season coming later this year, Strange New Worlds is expected to arrive in 2022.
Star Trek: Prodigy is a new animated series aimed at kids, originally developed for Nickelodeon, which will now air the show after the first season concludes on Paramount+. The series follows a “motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future.” The show is set in the Delta Quadrant in the year 2383, five years after Star Trek: Voyager. The show’s premise follows these alien kids after they commandeer a derelict Starfleet ship, where they are guided by the “Emergency Training Hologram” modeled after Captain Janeway, with Kate Mulgrew returning to voice the role she originated on Voyager.
While not mentioned in today’s announcement, it is likely both Prodigy and Strange New Worlds will also be available on Crave, Bell Media’s streaming service, which is also home to Discovery, Lower Decks, and Picard.
There is no word yet on where fans outside of the USA and Canada will be able to see Prodigy or Strange New Worlds, however, as ViacomCBS is rapidly expanding the global reach of Paramount+, it'll most likely debut on the streaming service in countries where it is available, or, in the cast of Prodigy, on Nickelodeon in countries where it isn't. Currently, Discovery is available on Netflix, with Amazon Prime Video carrying Lower Decks internationally.
