It happens all the time in live-action television shows and movies, where producers use photos and short videos of the exteriors of real buildings and landmarks - usually taken from a studio's own library, with many shows and films even sharing the same shots - for establishing shots, to indicate where the next scene is meant to be taking place and to help move the show or movie along, with the action in the following scenes taking place inside a closed set. And it seems like the producers of Nickelodeon's popular ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks have borrowed the idea!
It's been revealed that the exterior for the school in ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks may be based on a real life school, the Santa Barbara High School in California!
You can tell from the photos below that both buildings share the same characteristics, right down to the three archways at the front doors of the school.

It's more than likely that the school in ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks is based on Santa Barbara High School, as the Bagdasarians - Janice Karman and her husband Ross Bagdasarian - the owners of the franchise and producers of the current CG-animated ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks, live in Santa Barbara!
Unfortunately, like with TV shows, only the exterior of the building is used, with the classrooms and hallways having completely different designs.
