A teaser from the Madden NFL Twitter account today asks fans, "Are you ready?" Attached to the tweet is an image of SpongeBob's face and the reveal date: January 7. This is presumably when all will be revealed about Madden 21's campaign.
Update (1/7) - EA Sports has announced that, included in today's update of Madden NFL 21 is a "New SpongeBob Yard Location"! The update is available for Xbox Series X|S & PS5 and Xbox One, PS4, PC versions of the game!
The news follows CBS Sports and Nickelodeon announcing that they are teaming up for a special NFL Playoff broadcast. This Sunday's (Jan. 10) Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints will be broadcast on Nickelodeon, and the televised event will include a variety of Nickelodeon-themed elements - including slime.
Play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle will be joined by CBS Sports’ analyst Nate Burleson and Nick star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green (All That, Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered) in the booth to call the NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon. Additionally, Nick star Lex Lumpkin (All That, Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered) will serve as a reporter during the game. Nickelodeon’s coverage begins with “The SpongeBob SportsPants Countdown Special,” a sports-themed compilation special at 4 p.m. (ET) hosted by the Denver Broncos’ Von Miller, highlighting SpongeBob’s best sports moments and featuring pre-kickoff appearances by CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, as well as Eagle, Burleson and Green.
Here is a glimpse at what the broadcast this weekend may look like on TV--it's pretty wild stuff. A more "traditional" broadcast will also be available on CBS.
SpongeBob, Slime, and Googly Eyes, @NFLonCBS and @Nickelodeon will present the NFL like you’ve NEVER seen it before on Wild Card Weekend.

During halftime, Nickelodeon will air a special teaser for the new SpongeBob spin-off Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, which follows, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward's adventures when they were children. The prequel series premieres in 2021 on the streaming platform Paramount+ and later on Nickelodeon.
SpongeBob Madden 21 Map Teaser
It's not exactly clear, however, what role EA Sports and the Madden series may play in all of this, but it seems something is in the works and will be revealed very soon. Keep checking back for more!
Of course, the best collaboration would be Squidward's Sweet Victory performance made available in Madden 21, something that would make up for the bungled halftime performance at last year's Super Bowl. Others want SpongeBob and Patrick to be added as commentators to the game, although the chances of that happening are probably slim to none. Is mayonnaise a football?
This isn't the first time EA Sports and Madden have teamed up with Nickelodeon and SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2018, SpongeBob and his BFF Patrick guest starred in a trailer for NFL 19.
Madden is the latest video game franchise to feature Nickelodeon characters and shows. In 2019, Fortnite featured The Carnival of Doom from Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and in 2020, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles featured in SMITE.
As for SpongeBob, the iconic character's most recent video game adaptation, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, is also slated to get a mobile release, which will drop on January 21.

Madden 21 Adds SpongeBob-Inspired Game Modes And Gear To Celebrate NFL Playoffs
SpongeBob and company have invaded The Yard in Madden 21.
EA and Nickelodeon have officially pulled back the curtain on their Madden-SpongeBob collaboration, revealing several new game modes for The Yard, along with exclusive gear and a new Reef-Top location.
At first blush, the collaboration between Madden 21 and SpongeBob doesn't make much sense – Mr. SquarePants might be a professional bubble-blower, but his football skills leave a bit to be desired. However, there's actually a good reason for the awkward partnership. This weekend marks the start of the NFL Playoffs, and one of the games will be broadcast on Nickelodeon, complete with kid-friendly content and halftime show.
The Nick-NFL mashup has spilled over into Madden 21, giving us a bunch of new content in The Yard. Here are some of the most interesting additions:
- The Flying Dutchman's Ghostly Grab: A game mode in which you'll "fly high with the Dutchman and make incredible catches." Snagging deep touchdowns and completions will earn you bonus points.
- Sandy's Rocket Arm Rally: Players can throw the ball more than 80 yards – turning every QB into a superpowered Patrick Mahomes.
- The Goo Lagoon Bowl: "Navigate the goo in sloooow motion!"
- SpongeBob Reef-Top: A new location in The Yard, complete with massive SpongeBob blimps and the Krusty Krab.
- SpongeBob Gear: Compression sleeves, back protectors, and bikini bottom shorts are just some of the new equipment you'll be able to unlock.
Patrick Mahomes with a Patrick Star-themed back protector is something I never expected to need in my life – but here we are anyway. Some fans on Twitter are disappointed with the update – claiming EA should instead fix its servers and franchise mode – but the SpongeBob content is bound to appeal to a large portion of its audience. After all, it's SpongeBob. Who doesn’t like the guy?

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS Content Makes Its Way Into MADDEN NFL 21's The Yard
If nautical nonsense be something you wish then drop on in to Madden NFL 21's The Yard and experience the all-new SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration. The special event features new modes, challenges, and gear.
Earlier this week, Electronic Arts teased some sort of collaboration with Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants in Madden NFL 21. As expected, that collaboration is taking place within The Yard, the game's backyard-inspired 6v6 game mode. Heading into The Yard, players will discover all-new SpongeBob SquarePants-inspired content, including new game modes, a new location, and special cosmetic gear.
There are three new playable game modes that are cleverly inspired by SpongeBob. The Flying Dutchman's Ghostly Grab challenges players to make incredible catches and score long touchdowns to earn bonus points. Inspired by Sandy's crazy invention, Sandy's Rocket Arm allows players to launch passes that can travel 80 yards or further. Lastly, the Goo Lagoon Bowl puts goo all over the field causes players to move in slow motion.
In addition to these new modes, there is also a new playable location: SpongeBob Reef-Top. This doesn't actually take you under the sea, but it does feature a giant inflatable SpongeBob balloon flying above the field. Surrounding the field is SpongeBob's pineapple home and The Krusty Krab. The field is also appropriately themed. Completing challenges at SpongeBob Reef-Top will unlock exclusive SpongeBob-inspired gear themed after SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Plankton, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs.
While Madden is primarily known as a simulation of the NFL, The Yard offers players more of an arcade-like experience. It also allows EA the opportunity to host these sorts of special events and sponsorships without ruining the traditional football gameplay experience. The Yard existing as a separate mode allows for this kind of silly collaboration.

How to unlock Spongebob-themed gear and clothes in Madden 21
Who wants all the gear under the sea?
As previously predicted, Nickelodeon’s ultra-popular cartoon, Spongebob Squarepants, has crossed over into Madden 21’s The Yard. Along with its Bikini Bottom-inspired location, all players have the chance to scoop up gear based on all the beloved characters in the show. Here’s how to get each piece available.
Where to find all of Spongebob’s gear
Surprisingly, unlike most cosmetics, the event’s gear is not available for purchase in The Yard’s store – so you won’t have to spend any in or out-of-game currency whatsoever. Instead, you can discover each piece of clothing by first going to the “Spongebob Frenzy!” field via The Yard’s location menu.
From there, press triangle (on PlayStation) or Y (on Xbox) to view all unlockable rewards during the event. You can make progress and level up this “city pass” by earning specific high scores in any of the three challenges. The score needed for a particular item will be found underneath its image in this rewards menu.
There are 13 Spongebob-related items to collect – or one of each kind of clothing (including a pair of socks, a sleeve, and a visor). Also, every one of these is listed as Legendary, with the rarest item, the Nickelodeon Spongebob Jersey, only requiring you to get a high score of 20,000.
The challenges are relatively challenging, as each lends super strength, or increased speed, to a particular positional player on the enemy’s team. No matter, the event does allow you to use only the best superstars, in the likes of Patrick Mahomes, J.J. Watt, Deandre Hopkins, and Stefan Diggs.
