Macy’s National Believe Week Seeks to Raise an Additional $1 Million Through Annual Believe Campaign Benefitting Make-A-Wish®
From Sunday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 5, Macy’s will double its donation to Make-A-Wish for every letter sent to Santa online or dropped off at Macy’s stores

NEW YORK, NY--Nov. 30, 2020--This year, Macy’s (NYSE:M) beloved Believe letter-writing campaign extends National Believe Day to National Believe Week, providing customers the opportunity to double their donations to Make-A-Wish for a full week, helping deliver hope and joy to wish kids and their families when they need it most.
From the start of Believe campaign through its final day on Dec. 24, for every letter sent to Santa online at macys.com/believe or dropped off in Macy’s stores, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $1 million. During National Believe Week, from Sunday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 5, Macy’s has pledged $2 for each letter collected (up to an extra $1 million above the existing $1 million campaign goal) to help children fighting critical illnesses’ life-changing wishes come true.
“The impact of a wish forever transforms the lives of Make-A-Wish children battling critical illnesses and provides hope and strength needed to fight harder and look forward to tomorrow,” said Sam Di Scipio, Macy’s senior director of corporate communications, giving and volunteerism. “With the extension of National Believe Day to National Believe Week, we’re thrilled to give our customers and communities even more opportunities to safely participate in Macy’s Believe campaign and help Macy’s reach our extra $1 million goal to help more life-changing wish experiences come true.”
In celebration of National Believe Week, Macy’s stores, Make-A-Wish chapters and community partners across the country will host digital letter-writing parties and encourage letter drop-offs through Macy’s Curbside Pickup for enhanced safety. Now more than ever, as COVID-19 continues to impact communities and families, these letters to Santa can bring hope and joy to wish kids who are isolated and some of the most vulnerable members of our population.
For parents, educators and community leaders interested in participating in National Believe Week, Macy’s Believe Teacher & Parent Engagement Toolkit provides resources and lesson plans to easily execute within the new environment of virtual learning. These educational materials, created in partnership with The Learning Experience, include letter writing guides, holiday activities and more, offering fun and unique ways for children to learn the importance of giving back to those in need.
This year, Macy’s will help grant wishes across the country, including these three upcoming:
- Monday, Nov. 30 in Seattle, WA: 14-year-old Harry, diagnosed with lymphoma, wishes “to deliver care packages to cancer patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital.” Macy’s Bellevue and Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington have teamed up to help Harry’s wish come true. During National Believe Week, Harry will deliver pillows from Macy’s and care packages to 25 patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
- Tuesday, Dec. 8 in Brooklyn, NY: 5-year-old Kennise, diagnosed with leukemia, “wishes to stay in a castle.” Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Macy’s Downtown Brooklyn will transform a portion of the store into a castle fit for a princess.
- Tuesday, Dec. 8 in Richmond, VA: 5-year-old Ainarah, diagnosed with neuromuscular disorder, wishes “to meet JoJo Siwa.” Macy’s Short Pump Town Square, Nickelodeon and Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia will host a virtual meet-and-greet with singer and actress JoJo Siwa. Ainarah, her family and JoJo will be surprised with festive, matching family pajamas from Macy’s. On Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1, 20 percent of the purchase price (up to a total of $10,000) from Macy’s Family Pajama capsule will benefit Make-A-Wish.
Since 2003, Macy’s has donated more than $132 million to Make-A-Wish, including more than $21 million through the retailer’s annual Believe campaign, helping grant more than 15,500 wishes and impact more than 3.1 million people, including wish kids and their families, volunteers, community groups, medical professionals and more.
Health and safety continue to be a priority this holiday season. Macy’s 2020 Believe campaign offers virtual letter writing experiences ensuring customers and communities feel comfortable with enhanced safety measures in place. In addition to writing letters to Santa, find writing guides, local wish stories and more at macys.com/believe. Join the conversation on social by tagging #MacysBelieve.

ACM Launches 'Museums Mobilize' to Highlight COVID-19 Responses; Nickelodeon Named as Inaugural Partner
ACM Launches “Museums Mobilize” to Highlight COVID-19 Responses
—Campaign Tagline #MuseumsMobilize captures efforts—
ARLINGTON, VA (November 30, 2020)—The Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) has launched Museums Mobilize, a new initiative to highlight how children’s museums around the world are supporting children and families during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The campaign documents and amplifies museum efforts over the past eight months, and also provides resources to help ACM member museums communicate their work at the local level.
“Since March, children’s museums around the world have launched new efforts and transformed existing ones to support children, families, and communities facing unprecedented challenges,” said ACM Executive Director Laura Huerta Migus. “In these trying times, children’s museums have leveraged their expertise in child-and play-centered approaches to academic and social-emotional learning to meet direct and pressing needs—as shown in our new initiative, Museums Mobilize.”
Examples of children’s museum efforts include the Children’s Museum of Fond Du Lac partnership with the North Fond Du Lac School District to house the Treffert Way for the Exceptional Mind school; Louisiana Children’s Museum’s partnership with Tulane Institute of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health to offer the In Dialogue Video Chat Series, a webinar series that demystifies mental health issues for caregivers and their children; and the Museum of Discovery and Science’s MODS PODS program for distance learners in grades K-3.
To help shape the campaign, ACM is collecting stories of impact from our more than 300 children’s museum members around the world. These stories will be shared across ACM’s channels in the coming months. ACM is also building a network of global partners to increase children’s museums’ capacity to serve their communities. The first partner in the Museums Mobilize network is Nickelodeon.

Toph’s Rock Armor Really Wasn’t Supposed To Have Eye Holes in 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'
Toph's season 2 rock armor didn't originally have eye holes, seeing as Toph is blind, but an animation error found its way into the aired episode.
Avatar: The Last Airbender's creators admitted that they made a mistake while animating Toph Beifong's rock armor in season 2. In season 2, episode 9, "Bitter Work," Toph trains Aang in Earthbending by encasing herself in rocks and charging at him. If Aang could master an Earthbender's mentality of meeting an obstacle head on, he would be able to push her back. Fans were quick to notice that Toph's rock armor had eye holes, even though she is blind and wouldn't need them.
Toph's blindness never held her back from becoming the greatest Earthbender in the Avatar universe. She learned to Earthbend from the original masters of the art, badgermoles, and defeated several formidable opponents throughout the series. Her seismic sense allowed her to 'see' everything around her and anticipate others' movements, and she even created an entirely new form of bending: Metalbending. Her tough demeanor and ability to wait and listen while Earthbending made her the perfect teacher for Aang.
Toph uses her rock armor in one of her first training exercises with Aang. In the scene, her armor features a hole over her eyes, despite her blindness making such a gap pointless (and potentially dangerous). In the book Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series, creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko explained that the eye hole was simply an error that occurred during the animation process: the hole was intended to be over her mouth, not her eyes.
One of the first designs for Toph's armor took Toph's blindness into consideration and omitted the eye hole, instead including a hole over her mouth so she would still be able to breathe. According to DiMartino and Konietzko, the mistake came when "the animation was drawn so that the hole appeared over her eyes." The crew missed the error when they were revising the episode, so it ended up in the final version of the animation. Some fans speculated that it was Toph joking about her blindness, as she often did around other members of the Gaang. However, this small passage from Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series confirms that it truly was a mistake.
Fortunately, this mistake did not occur the next time Toph uses armor in Avatar: The Last Airbender. When she, Suki, and Sokka take down the Fire Nation's airships in the series finale, Toph covers herself in metal armor to protect herself from the Firebenders steering the ship. This particular suit of armor doesn't have any eye holes in it, showing that the animators learned from their initial mistake and adapted their design accordingly.
The pilot of Avatar: The Last Airbender can be watched here, and the recently released second printing of Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Art of the Animated Series is now available from Dark Horse. The follow up, The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series-Book One: Air, will receive a second reprint in February 2021, also from Dark Horse.

The Real Life Event That Inspired 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'
The early concept for Avatar: The Last Airbender was partly inspired by a real-life shipwreck that happened in the early 1900s in Antarctica.
Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were inspired by a real-life historic event while they were in the early stages of developing the beloved animated series. Konietzko and DiMartino, who met at school and shared a dream of creating an animated television show, decided to collaborate and come up with a pitch for Nickelodeon. They knew they needed an idea that appealed to and was appropriate for children – either a show about children or non-human creatures that children could relate to.
Konietzko and DiMartino started sketching. As DiMartino recalls in Avatar Spirits, a short documentary on the making of Avatar, “we spread out all of our ideas on the table … and one of the drawings was something Bryan had done.” Among the first sketches by Bryan Konietzko was one of a young, bald boy with two companions: a cyclops robot monkey with an arrow on its head and a polar bear dog who walked upright on its hind legs. The polar bear dog became Appa (though the idea was later repurposed for Naga in Avatar: The Legend of Korra) and the robot monkey became Momo. The creators decided to take the arrow from the monkey’s head and put it on the boy – and thus the boy became Aang, the Avatar.
But these characters needed a world and a story, so DiMartino thought of Antarctica. Specifically, he thought of Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition on the Endurance. Ernest Shackleton led several British expeditions to Antarctica in the early 1900s, but the part of Shackleton’s story that DiMartino seemed most taken with was the element of survival. In 1915, the Endurance sank in Antarctica, stranding its 28-man crew. Shackleton and his crew journeyed by foot and boat for months until they were rescued – all of them. No one from the Endurance died on that expedition. “I had been watching documentaries about Shackleton’s crazy Antarctic expedition,” DiMartino says in Avatar Spirits, “and the ship getting caught in the ice and all these guys surviving against all odds.”
DiMartino and Konietzko were intrigued by the idea that humans could manage to survive the harshest climates on Earth. Konietzko was brainstorming when he was at yoga “drenched in sweat,” as he recalls in Avatar Spirits, “and I thought of combining his Shackleton idea with this kid.” The connection between Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic voyage and Avatar is most prominently reflected in the inciting event of the series. In Avatar’s pilot, “The Boy in the Iceberg,” Katara and Sokka discover Aang, who had – against all odds – survived being trapped in an iceberg for a hundred years, not unlike Shackleton’s men who survived the cold and unforgiving Antarctic.
Avatar’s characters, story, world, and concept resonate as much with audiences today as they did when Avatar: The Legend of Aang first aired, but imagining the idea of Avatar: The Last Airbender coming from an actual historical event seems strange – especially an event that likely wouldn’t interest children. And Konietzko’s original concept for Aang, Appa, and Momo is very different from the finalized versions. But once the two ideas melded together and gave Konietzko and DiMartino a solid starting point, the rest of the award-winning show came together in a masterfully created and produced work of children’s animation.
