Leveraging the Power of Parents | ViacomCBS Networks Africa

JOHANNESBURG 27 AUGUST 2020 – Parents direct billions of dollars spent globally each year. Their control on family spending has a direct impact on brands and how these brands choose to reach their audiences. Gone are the days of yesteryear where parents believed that children were meant to be seen and not heard. A new generation of parents has emerged and interestingly, these parents have made their children part of the decision-making process in the household.
As families navigate the new normal of home schooling and quarantining during this Covid-19 pandemic, brands have the opportunity to tap into this behaviour and expand their consumer reach.
Research conducted by ViacomCBS Networks Africa on families shows that today’s kids and parents around the world have an interesting dynamic around brand choices and decision making. The path to purchase in households (with children) is often a negotiation between children and parents and children have been found to have the upper hand.
In the study, 87% of parents said that they initiate the purchase process in the household, often identifying what they need to buy. Then, they will let their children know about those needs and both parties will collaborate in evaluating their options.
Our study has found that both kids and parents are influenced by rational and emotional drivers. Emotion, however, is the primary driver behind decision making. Rationally, parents want to know how much a product costs and whether their kids will enjoy it. From an emotional perspective, parents are now seeking brands that allow them to spend time interacting as a family and help them remain heroes in the eyes of their kids.
Through our research, we found that millennial upbringing, kids’ unprecedented access to tech, financial awareness and family closeness all play a role as key drivers to family collaboration in the path to purchase. We will delve deeper into understanding millennial upbringing as a key driver to collaboration when purchasing from brands.
Previously, Generation Xers parented using a top down approach where children were “seen, not heard”. However, when millennials were born, the shift in parenting started to happen. Children became the center of their parents’ worlds, given a seat at the table and often had the upper hand over their parents.
Additionally, the study shows that a majority of millennials attended daycare, participated in play groups and played organised sports. Because of this, they learned the value of teamwork and collaboration when they were young, and these learnings are reflected in their parenting style now.
With this in mind, parents have reimagined the role of children in the family. Instead of catering to their children’s every whim, they have brought learned values of teamwork and collaboration to the fore. Parents and children now collaborate in the process of decision making in the household.
Kids are reported to influence up to 16 out of 26 categories of all household purchases and as a market segment, cannot be ignored. In fact, ignoring them means missing the mark as a brand completely.
Studies show that the influence of children continues to increase exponentially although the kinds of products marketed to them have remained the same over the years. Children have gained more affluence which makes their market segment worthy of pursuit by businesses.
Their heavy use of media and quick adoption of newer technologies give advertisers a good opportunity to market campaigns using TV, cellphones, iPads, gaming platforms and other digital platforms.
To appeal fully to households, brands also need to target and engage both kids and parents simultaneously. This can be challenging because parents and kids have different needs and interests. However, through balanced messaging that appeals and engages with both parents and children, brands can remain top of mind in any household. It is so essential that brands create messaging that reflects these new collaborative households that have emerged.
As ViacomCBS Networks Africa, we noticed that within our stable, our fastest growing channel during the COVID-19 pandemic across most target markets is Nickelodeon a children’s channel, a family channel. Interestingly, children’s programmes as a genre have seen a 49% growth in viewership, coming second to news at 99%. This serves as testament to the power of family viewing often in favor of the younger audience channels. It also reflects that on TV, the only channels that will have high viewership by both parents and children are the kid’s channels.
Parents, particularly moms, happily oblige to watching children’s programmes frequently in a bid to keep their children happy. The same pattern can be seen in their purchasing patterns. Kids are seen as trusted advisors to their moms on the latest products to buy because they have their pulse on trends and brands that are considered ‘cool’. A high 76% of moms involved in the ViacomCBS study said that they often leverage their kids’ tech skills to research brand information and their kids play a massive part in the products that are bought in the household.
The Channel Director for Nickelodeon Africa, Tasania Parsadh put it best when she said – “Good robust research is what underpins our content creation and understanding of our dual audience of kids and parents. While kids enjoy the animation and fun on the channels, our parents who engage with the content are avid fans too. Co-viewing homes have grown over the years and in SA, we frequently have toddlers, kids, teens and their parents actively watching our Nickelodeon and NickToons channels daily.”
This is an opportunity for brands to leverage the path to purchase, which studies have shown, is driven by a delicate process of negotiation. Parents and kids are working together to decide which products should be purchased in the home. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has announced the exciting news that the 2020 SCAD AnimationFest will be hosting a "Creator Conversation" session with Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 5 p.m. ET!
SCAD AnimationFest returns for a fourth year with an all-new virtual setting, offering unparalleled access to titans of animation, special screenings, insightful presentations, and a few surprises along the way. Eventgoers are invited to the digital celebration of this lively artform and experience two days of animated excitement right from their computer, tablet, or mobile device.
The SCAD AnimationFest, one of the more academically notable animation festivals in the animation industry's calendar, usually takes place each fall in Atlanta. This year, the festival will take on a virtual twist for the first time ever.
The 2020 SCAD AnimationFest will take place on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26, and it will feature programming that represents many of the university’s top-ranked degree programs: including animation, visual effects, motion media design, film & television, along with interactive design and game development.
The festival will also showcase many SCAD alumni who have become leaders in their creative careers, as well as standout student work.
"The profession of animation is one of the creative winners of 2020, because virtual collaboration has long been a practice in the industry -- where teams work together from across the world to write, produce, score, and give voice to these films,” SCAD president Paula Wallace said in a statement.
Heavy hitters in the film and television industry are expected to engage in this year’s festival. Exclusive screenings, panel discussions, visual presentations and top talent and alumni from Netflix, Epic Games, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, Amazon, and more will be available to eventgoers.
“Animation films and shows have actually increased production during the pandemic! SCAD AnimationFest finds the industry riding high and invites our SCAD students into the very heart of it, to connect with our Bees in the industry and other filmmakers elevating animation to become the leading form in world entertainment,” Wallace added.

The Legend of Korra takes place takes place 70 years after the events of its predecessor, following the next Avatar, a young girl named Korra from the Southern Water Tribe. Both series have since continued in the form of graphic novels.

Synopsis
In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, Tainá and her friends live in a house in the Great Tree – the tallest one, mother of all other trees. All the animals in the forest know that whenever they need help, they can count on Tainá by calling “cru-cru”. By word of mouth, this contagious call finds its way through the forest until it reaches Tainá, who is always ready to face the challenges coming in her way! Together, Tainá and her team have lots of fun in an enchanted forest, but they will also face many perils trying to protect the Great Forest.
Playfully children will learn about the Amazon rainforest, stimulating them to respect the cultural differences between people, bringing a message of friendship, respect and care for the nature in each episode.

PAW Patrol to 'Jet To The Rescue' in New Made-For-TV Movie
The PAW Patrol are set to Jet To The Rescue in their third made-for-TV movie!
In Paw Patrol: Jet To The Rescue, the Super Pups must defend Barkingburg from the Duke of Flappington, who has acquired the power of a mighty levitation gem! Also to add insult to injury, the Duke of Flappington plans to raise the entire village of Barkingburg into the sky using the stolen levitation device, so the pups really do have their work cut out for them!
The movie's synopsis reads: "Get Ready to zoom back to Barkingburg with the pups in this all-new movie! When the scheming Duke of Flappington steals a powerful levitation gem from the royal castle and uses its magical powers to raise Barkingburg into the clouds, Skye will need to overcome her biggest fears and lead the team in their biggest aerial rescue yet! Can PAW Patrol JET TO THE RESCUE and save the town before it is lost in the sky forever?" (#993)
Ryder himself can't help the pups beyond providing them with their own specially outfitted personal jets that each come with stealth mode, as he explains to Skye, Everest, and Tracker in the exclusive clip below, courtesy of Romper. Ryder has been captured along with the rest of the pups, who will also need to be rescued from inside the castle of Barkingburg.

Throughout the movie, the pups are going to be working overtime on this new rescue mission. Not only will they be expected to rescue Ryder and the other pups, they're also going to have to help out with Mayor Humdinger's kittens and save a stunt pilot.
In the U.S., Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment will release Paw Patrol: Jet To The Rescue on DVD on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. The 88-minute DVD will carry an SRP of $16.99, and will feature the TV movie and and four bonus high-flying adventures:

Nickelodeon to Premiere 'Nickelodeon Unleashed' During Fall 2020
Nickelodeon USA will premiere Nickelodeon Unleashed during Fall 2020! Nickelodeon announced the show during their "Fall 2020 on Nickelodeon" trailer. There's currently not much information available about the show, however, Nickelodeon has applied to trademark the show's title with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Given that the show features the world "leash" and that the logo features a bone, it's speculated that will be dog-related. Earlier this year, MysticArt Pictures' posted a casting call for America's Funniest Pets, billed as "a hilarious new pet variety show from a major kids network!" that aims to put "you and your pet center stage". Whether this is the same project is currently unknown.
