Nickelodeon Universe Operator Triple Five Misses Debt Payments
Triple Five Group, which owns the Nickelodeon Universe amusement parks at its Mall of America and the new American Dream mall in New Jersey, has missed the last two monthly payments on its $1.4 billion mortgage for the Mall of America property. The Bloomington, Minneapolis-area mall - the biggest in the United States - has been closed since March 17, though it is scheduled to reopen on a limited basis on June 1, with Nickelodeon Universe remaining closed until the state approves those types of businesses to reopen. The company is asking the state of Minnesota for a forgivable loan to help it make its debt payments.
Many shopping mall operators were struggling before the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, as "brick-and-mortar" retail suffered under competition from online sales and indoor malls fell out of favor. The pandemic will be the killing blow for many retail chains, such as mall stalwart Pier 1, which recently announced its closure. With many stores unable to pay rent while closed, leveraged mall developers can't make their payments, either.
Triple Five was opening its new Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream, starting with its first rides last fall. The incomplete park didn't immediately hit with fans, but Triple Five was hoping for a bigger response following an official opening of the park and the surrounding mall this spring. That didn't happen because of the pandemic.
The New Jersey park features the record-setting TMNT Shellraiser roller coaster - a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter that offers the world's steepest drop at 121.5 degrees. Other coasters at the indoor park include Shredder - a Gerstlauer spinner, and Sandy’s Blasting Bronco - an Intamin launch coaster that has yet to debut.
From Patch:
Owner Of American Dream Missed Two Mortgage Payments: Reports
Triple Five put up Mall of America as collateral to take out a loan for American Dream, and missed its April and May mortgage payments.
SECAUCUS, NJ — The owner of American Dream mega-mall has missed two mortgage payments to the bank, according to a June 2 report in the Bergen Record and CNBC.
American Dream is owned by Triple Five (the Ghermezian family), the same family that owns Mall of America in Minnesota.
In fact, Triple Five put up Mall of America as collateral to take out a loan for American Dream, according to the news reports.
Triple Five missed two payments for its $1.4 billion mortgage for Mall of America. The bank that owns the mortgage, Wells Fargo, confirmed to the Bergen Record that Triple Five missed its April and May payments.
It is an incredibly tough time to be in the mall business, much less open a brand-new mall. American Dream just opened last fall, but only in a tentative fashion: Only the Nickelodeon theme park and indoor ski mountain opened.
In fact, many of American Dream's store spaces had not even been rented and much of the mall was vacant even while families flocked to the theme park. American Dream was able to get one large-scale retailer in, European discount store Primark, and they were set to open this spring. But Primark had to suspend operations due to the pandemic.
Neither American Dream or Mall of America have reopened yet.
Triple Five CEO Don Ghermezian told CNBC in April: "The difficulty we are going though now ... if tenants don't want to pay rent, my response is: 'I have got to pay a mortgage. I borrowed money. I have got to pay back my lenders.'"

From Bloomberg Quint:
Mall of America Said to Miss Another Payment on Mortgage Debt
(Bloomberg) -- Minnesota’s Mall of America missed another payment on a $1.4 billion mortgage, putting the borrower more than 60 days delinquent, according to people with knowledge of the financing. The mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the U.S., didn’t make its roughly $7 million debt payment for June, according to the people, who asked not to be named speaking about a private matter. It was the third straight month of missed payments for the property.
Triple Five Group, the company that owns the mall, didn’t reply to requests for comment. The 5.6-million square-foot complex, which features 500 stores, partially reopened June 10 with reduced capacity at restaurants and movie theaters. An indoor theme park, Nickelodeon Universe, remained closed to comply with health directives, according to its website.
Mall of America is one of North America’s three largest shopping centers, all owned by the Ghermezian family. The properties face financial challenges as coronavirus infection precautions depress the lure of experiential attractions, such as theme parks, and brick-and-mortar retailers lose market share to online competitors.
Mall landlords have struggled to collect rent from shuttered retailers, adding to the financial pressure in the industry.
The West Edmonton Mall, the first mega shopping center developed by the Armenians in the 1980s, began gradually reopening in May.
The Ghermezians’ American Dream, a megamall in the New Jersey Meadowlands with an indoor ski slope and water park, has not yet fully opened. The developer’s construction costs for the project surpassed $2 billion, up from an original 2015 estimate of $1.55 billion, according to a recent report by CBRE Group Inc.
The Ghermezians pledged 49% of their equity interests in the West Edmonton Mall and Mall of America as collateral to finance the American Dream.

Update (8/20) - From StarTribune:
Mall of America, behind on its mortgage, reaches deal to avoid foreclosure
The mall's owner has been several months late on the $1.4 billion mortgage for the megamall.
Mall of America in Bloomington has been behind on its mortgage payments since the temporary closure due to pandemic mandates.
The owner of the Mall of America continues to be months behind on its mortgage payments and has entered a cash management agreement to avoid foreclosure.
MOA’s owner, Triple Five Group, started having trouble meeting the mortgage after the mall had to closed in March due to state-mandated efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus.
The loan was transferred to special servicing in May after the mall owner, Canada-based Triple Five, was no longer making full payments. At the time, a mall representative said revenue had fallen 85%.
Now the special servicer has entered into a cash management agreement with Triple Five requiring increased reporting requirements and monthly remittance of net cash, according to a report issued Tuesday by data firm Trepp.
The special servicer, CWCapital Asset Management, could not be reached on Wednesday.
Mall of America’s collateral value, which was $2.3 billion in 2014, has decreased to $1.9 billion, according to Trepp.
Malls across the country have uphill mountains to climb as they deal with struggling tenants, several of which have filed for bankruptcy in recent months or can’t afford full rent payments because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Trepp’s report shows MOA’s loan was paid through the month of April, showing payments on the $1.4 billion mortgage remains three months delinquent.
The mall reopened in June and is slowly getting back to normal with the majority of its stores and its indoor theme park Nickelodeon Universe currently open. Tenant rent collections have climbed from 33% in April and May to 50% in July, according to Trepp.
MOA’s finances are complicated by its owner’s other projects as well.
Triple Five pledged a 49% stake in the Mall of America for its American Dream megamall in East Rutherford, N.J., which hasn’t been able to fully open.
Despite the issues, retail experts said they expected lenders to work together with Triple Five on a solution for the Mall of America.

Nickelodeon Scandinavia to Premiere 'Ollie's Pack' on Monday 31st August 2020
Share it: @Nickelodeon #OlliesPack
Ollie, his two best friends and an otherworldly backpack embark on monstrous adventures in Nickelodeon’s original action-comedy series, Ollie’s Pack, premiering on Nickelodeon Scandinavia on Monday 31st August 2020, airing weekdays at 14:30 on Nickelodeon Denmark (Danmark) and Nickelodeon Sweden (Sverige). The series is also expected to air on Nickelodeon Norway (Norge) from the same day.
Ollie’s Pack is locally titled Ollies Rygsæk in Denmark and Ollies Ryggsäck in Sweden.
Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series combines the struggles of tween life with the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters.
“Ollie’s Pack is filled with excitement, humor, and heart, and we are thrilled to welcome Ollie and his friends to Nickelodeon’s incredible family of original characters,” said Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President of Development and Production, Nickelodeon.
Chris Rose, Vice President of Animation Production and Development, Nickelodeon, adds, “I can’t wait to introduce a new generation to the timeless tale of a boy growing up and finding his place, while simultaneously trying to save the world.”
Ollie’s Pack follows Ollie and his backpack, which doubles as a powerful portal allowing an array of monsters to travel from the Monsterverse into Ollie’s world on Earth. Throughout the series, Ollie and his two best friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while often utilizing the helpful monsters who assist with their everyday tween problems, like sneaking into a movie or winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest. No matter the circumstances, Ollie’s thirst for adventure undoubtedly gets him into trouble that only he and his friends can resolve.
In the first episode, “The Chosen One…Stinks,” Ollie’s stinky sweat is a hot commodity in the Monsterverse so he exchanges it with a monster who offers to do his laundry. Then, in “Not Another Superhero Movie,” Ollie and his friends utilize a monster’s powers to make an epic superhero movie for their film club.
The US-English dub of the series stars James Hartnett (Cupcake & Dino) as Ollie, an ordinary, impulsive, and creative kid who has been given the status of Chosen One and Keeper of the Pack; Ana Sani (Mysticons) as Cleo, the brave and adventurous comic relief; and David Berni (Rocket Monkeys) as Bernie, the nervy and logical voice of reason.
Along the way, audiences will be introduced to some larger than life monsters including Andre and Bev, a bounty hunting double act; Major Snooch, a high ranking official in the Ministry of Chosen One Affairs; and Rance, a weaselly petty thief in utter denial about his boldfaced stealing.
The series originated from “Monster Pack,” an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program. Creators Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty) met at the Vancouver Film School and have now been friends for over 10 years. Pedro is a creator, producer, director and animator from Rio de Janeiro, while Graham is an animation supervisor and instructor at local and overseas studios.
Ollie’s Pack made its world premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. in April 2020, and is slated to debut internationally later this year, reaching over 170 countries and territories.

Filmed in Paris – including at the Garnier Opera House – the new season will also travel to the French Riviera, where the students participate in an international dance workshop, and Brussels. Principal photography commenced in July 2019.
The new season will comprise 26 half hours, bringing the series to a total of 78 episodes.
In Season 3, Lena seeks to find who she is and why everyone is so interested in her and her timepiece. When she and her friends attend a dance workshop in the South of France, they have to fight for the only spot available in the company. What will Lena do when the Time Bureau comes for her and tries to bring her back to 1905?
“The new season will push the boat out even further with exciting storylines, new characters, compelling dance sequences, and new locations that we have no doubt will continue to thrill and entertain viewers,” said David Michel, president of Cottonwood Media and managing director of Federation Kids & Family.

The series is a Cottonwood Media production, co-produced with ZDF, ZDF Enterprises, Be-Films and the Opera National de Paris. Find Me in Paris is directed by Matt Bloom (Emmy Award-Winning Hank Zipzer, and Disney’s The Lodge), along with heavyweight Irish directing team Ronan and Robert Burke (TV3’s hit show Ed Rock, Netflix’s Free Rein, animated series Roy and Damo & Ivor: The Movie).

Nickelodeon Names Zack Olin as SVP of Live-Action
In the newly-created role, Olin will partner with Shauna Phelan, who serves as Senior Vice President of live-action scripted content. Together they will oversee scripted series, movies and specials in the company’s scripted division. Both will report to Brian Robbins, President of ViacomCBS Kids and Family Entertainment. Olin will be based in Hollywood.
The appointment formalizes Olin’s relationship with Nickelodeon, having previously served a live-action development consultant for the network. Before that, Olin spent several years at ABC Studios (now ABC Signature) as Vice President (VP), Creative Development, overseeing series like Grown-ish, Speechless, The Kids Are Alright and The Real O’Neals.
Prior to that, Olin served as executive director of current programming at ABC Network Entertainment, where he oversaw series such as Happy Endings, Cougar Town, Better Off Ted, Samantha Who? and Body of Proof as well as story and animation for the animated release Schoolhouse Rock! Earth.
Olin also worked on the Development and Current Programming teams at Fox Broadcasting, assisting in the development of American Dad and managing series including The Simpsons, That 70’s Show, The Bernie Mac Show and MadTV. Olin began his television career at CBS Productions as an assistant on the development team.
This hire marks a continued focus on live-action content for the company. In June, ViacomCBS’s kids and family division hired Yolanda Cochran as SVP of live-action long-form production for its Nickelodeon channels. Around the same time, ViacomCBS also named Syrinthia Studer as the first Executive Vice President (EVP) of Nickelodeon and Awesomeness Films, overseeing all live-action feature-length content for Awesomeness and Nick’s kids and family studio.
Despite these appointments, Nickelodeon’s live-action efforts have faced significant delays after shutdowns related to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic shuttered filming around the world earlier this year. Recent live-action offerings have instead focused on remote filming, like the quarantine-themed Danger Force special that aired in May and subsequent filmed-at-home shorts.

'The Legend of Korra' Merchandise Sale Brings Home The Latest World of Bending
Netflix, prior to acquiring both Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, announced that it would be producing a live action adaptation for the first series, re-telling the story of Aang awakening from a block of ice and attempting to take down the Fire Nation and their campaign of world domination. Though Aang and his friends have certainly had their fair share of merchandise, Korra is definitely looking to catch up with their overall sales with the retailer Hot Topic attempting to capitalize on the Netflix acquisition - the show has already become the number one title on the streamer!
Hot Topic currently has the Legend of Korra shirts and vinyl figures for sale here, while Funko took to their official Twitter account to help push forward the sale as well by showing off the amazing Funko Pop figurine for Korra that shows off her excellent use of bending as the Avatar:

The Legend of Korra ran for fifty two episodes over the course of four seasons (or "Books"), giving us some brand new adventures for the re-incarnation of Aang, and introducing a world where bending had become so common place, it was used by a number of citizens in their every day lives. With Korra struggling against benders and a rogue movement looking to make bending a thing of the past, it will be interesting to see if we ever revisit this world in a possible sequel or a live action series re-telling these stories. Like its precessor, the story of The Legend of Korra has continued with best-selling graphic novels from Dark Horse.
