Avatar: The Last Airbender has been enjoying a resurgence of popularity in recent weeks following Netflix re-adding Nickelodeon's beloved 15-year-old animated series to its programming library in the U.S. - where it quickly became the platform's number-one title.
And now, fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender may soon be able to bring the world of the iconic series into the real world thanks to talented LEGO set designer!
Fan designer Minibrick Productions, who also runs the YouTube channel of the same name, has been active on LEGO Ideas for about three years, and his latest creation is a LEGO set inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender.
LEGO Ideas (formally Cuusoo) is a platform where fans can submit their own custom projects, and if a project gets 10,000 supporters - a target which the project smashed in under two weeks (!), making it the fifth fastest draft in the history of Ideas - it could become an actual LEGO set!
Now Minibrick Productions has reached it's goal of 10,000 supporters, it'll now be reviewed by LEGO to see if it can become an actual LEGO set!
The official description for the project is:
"Journey across the 4 nations alongside Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Momo, and Appa! Be careful not to run into General Iroh and Prince Zuko, firebenders who will stop at nothing in order to capture the Avatar! Together with Team Avatar, you can:
- Play as Aang and learn to bend all four elements!
- Ride on Appa and set up camp as you evade the fire nation! He gets really hungry, so make sure to feed him some cabbages!
- Unlock Aang's Avatar State, but make sure to control it!
- Use Waterbending, Earthbending, and Airbending to fight againt Prince Zuko!
- Pour out some Jasmine tea for Uncle Iroh, his favorite!
The possibilities with LEGO Avatar: The Last Airbender are infinite! Create your own battles, master the elements, and restore balance to the Four Nations! So what are you waiting for? Yip yip!
The LEGO Avatar: The Last Airbender set doesn't currently feature Suki, the leader of one Kyoshi Warrior team of the Earth Kingdom's Kyoshi Island and girlfriend of Sokka, however, there is hope that she'll appear in the finished set, with Minibrick Productions saying: "So many of you have also asked about Suki, and I would love to have her appear in this set. Unfortunately, I didn't want to risk putting too many minifigures in this submission, so I left her out - hopefully if this set is green-lit, she will find her way in somehow :)"
The number of bricks and minifigures used in the Avatar: The Last Airbender LEGO set is currently unknown, but Minibrick Productions reportedly plans to release the set with a $50-60 USD recommended retail price.
Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't new the the world of LEGO. Two Lego Avatar: The Last Airbender sets based on the Air Temple and Fire Nation Ship in the show were released in 2006, however, these were unfortunately short lived.
Created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and airing between 2005 and 2008, the critically-acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in world people can manipulate the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, and they lived peacefully in different regions until one of the nations started a world war. One master who can manipulate all four elements, dubbed the "Avatar," had been able to prevent this war, but disappeared soon after. 100 years later, a new Avatar named Aang awakens and sets out on a journey to master all the elements in order to bring peace to the land once more by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.
Fondly remembered for its likable characters and surprisingly deep themes of destiny, prejudice, and war, Avatar: The Last Airbender ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, spawning a number of tie-in comic books and even the four-season sequel series, The Legend Of Korra. A live-action Netflix adaptation was announced back in 2018, one that will hopefully avoid the mistakes that befell the ill-fated M. Night Shyamalan film of 2010, which notoriously mispronounced key characters’ names and white-washed the source material's ethnically diverse cast.
