BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., March 17, 2020 -- Genius Brands International “Genius Brands” (Nasdaq: GNUS) announces today that Nickelodeon, a Viacom Inc. company (Nasdaq: VIA, VIAB), has again increased the broadcast of the Company’s hit original preschool series, Rainbow Rangers, to 26 airings per week.

Nick Jr. now airs Rainbow Rangers Monday – Friday, four airings per day, and six airings on the weekends. The animated action-adventure series premiered on Nick Jr. in November 2018 with five airings per week and has consistently achieved high ratings with its target demo of Girls 2 – 5-years-old. The additional airings of Rainbow Rangers, which represents a five-fold increase (400+%), are complimented by content available via video on demand platforms and the brand’s robust YouTube channel where viewers have consumed over 22.5 million minutes of Rainbow Rangers’ content in the last year.

Genius Brands International Responds to Misleading Short Seller Criticisms

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Genius Brands International, Inc. “Genius Brands” (NASDAQ:GNUS) today released the following statement from CEO and Chairman Andy Heyward, in response to recent short seller criticisms published online and on certain social media platforms:

“Genius Brands has carefully reviewed the report and social media comments published by two short seller funds last week. These materials contain numerous misleading statements, omissions of key facts, and red herrings. More importantly, the short sellers themselves demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of the unique potential of Genius Brands and our position of strength given the current dynamics of our industry.

It is also important to keep in mind how these short sellers make money and what they are trying to do. Make no mistake, their intention – and indeed how they make their money – is to manipulate the stock price of companies like ours in order to profit at the expense of other shareholders. Their interests are directly opposed to shareholders’ interests. In contrast, as one of the largest investors in the Company myself, my interests are fully aligned with those of my fellow shareholders – and will remain so.

With that in mind, I submit the following:

-- We are well positioned to create substantial value – With Kartoon Channel! launching on June 15 and to be available in more than 100 million U.S. TV households and 200 million mobile devices, we are positioned to be one of the preeminent ad-supported kids’ digital networks. The service referred to as a ‘Netflix for kids’ is made even stronger by the distinct fact that it is a free service. There are no subscriptions fees, it is ad-supported. Further, we do not anticipate being impacted by COVID-19. The business of cartoons has historically had an appeal that is timeless, and is a rare asset class which has historically been resistant to typical market forces (e.g., the price of gold, oil, interest rates, elections, etc.). While the rest of Hollywood is grinding to a stop during the COVID-19 crisis, we're creating new products for an audience that is growing now out of the new technologies and streaming services. This is especially true at a time when there are more kids at home and in front of their devices during the pandemic. We believe we will see robust and accelerated revenue growth coming forth in this arena for the foreseeable future.

-- Our balance sheet is strong – We have $9.75 million of debt; in excess of $45 million of cash, significant receivables from a diverse array of companies across our industry with strong credit profiles, and low overhead. Today, Genius Brands has enough cash on our balance sheet to meet our existing obligations and execute on our business plan for at least 60 months, and still fund continuing new production and content acquisitions each year. Conveniently, last week when one of the short sellers stated we weren’t at the same revenue point as one of our Canadian-based competitors, he neglected to mention that the other company has more than 60 times ($600 million) as much debt as Genius Brands. We think identifying this omission is important to understanding the whole story. Finally, to clear up market confusion that we believe has been generated as a result of one short seller’s report, the shelf registration on form S-3 filed on June 4th was related to our capital raise in March 2020. We registered the resale of shares underlying the warrants we issued in March, and the S-3 filing does not in any way represent a new capital raise, nor is it related to recent changes in our stock price.

-- The short sellers’ criticisms of our Programs highlight their own industry ignorance – Llama Llama is an industry-recognized tremendous asset that we have on great terms, which are mutually beneficial with the IP’s author/book publisher and ourselves. We are also confident in the appeal of the soon to be launched Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, one of the last creations of Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, Fantastic Four, Black Panther, and the Avengers, among others. Similarly, we are happy with the outlook for Rainbow Rangers. The fact is that the show’s airings on Nick Jr. have been scaled back while we are currently producing new episodes, which is a standard industry practice known as “resting.” We expect the airings to ramp back up in August when the new episodes are completed and this will be timed with the launch of toys from Mattel hitting the shelves of Walmart in August. We are confident Nick Jr.’s interests are aligned with ours – after all, they have a stake in the consumer products merchandising royalties related to this asset.

-- The track record of our leadership team speaks volumes – Our senior management comes largely from the Walt Disney Company, DreamWorks Animation, and Hasbro Toys, and has been responsible for many of the biggest and most profitable hits in children's television history, as well as toy and consumer product programs generating Billions of dollars of program sales and royalty income. The management team and board have had creative, licensing, production, broadcasting, and sales roles in some of the biggest animated hits in children’s history, including Lion King, Toy Story, Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, Power Rangers, My Little Pony, Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, Transformers, Muppet Babies, Fraggle Rock, Real Ghostbusters, and Inspector Gadget. Nickelodeon Slated to Premiere 'Rugrats' Revival in 2021; Nancy Cartwright to Reprise Role of Chuckie Finster

Vanity Fair is reporting the exciting news that voice actor Nancy Cartwright (The Simpsons) that she'll be reprising her role of Chuckie Finster in Nickelodeon's Rugrats revival! Additionally, Vanity Fair also reports that Nickelodeon is planning to debut the network's revived Rugrats series during Fall 2020!


Update (5/14) - Vanity Fair have updated their post to say that Nickelodeon is now planning to premiere the Rugrats revival in 2021!

Nancy Cartwright is best known for providing the voice of Bart Simpson on the long-running, record-breaking animated series The Simpsons. Having voiced the mischievous 10-year-old for over three decades, Cartwright's name will always be synonymous with the role. When not voicing Bart, however, the actor has lent her voice to a variety of other animated characters over the years. She notably took over the role of Chuckie Finster on Rugrats in 2001 following the retirement of the late Christine Cavanaugh, who has since passed away, but was so good even diehard fans couldn't tell the difference. She would also voice the role in the movie sequel Rugrats Go Wild and the spin-off series All Grown Up!.

In a recent Impress Me segment for Vanity Fair, Nancy revealed that taking over the role of Chuckie was one of the most - if not, the most - challegning jobs of her voice acting career. Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures announced in July 2018 that they were relaunching Nickelodeon's beloved '90s animated series Rugrats with a 26-episode new season from Nickelodeon and a live-action film featuring CGI characters from Paramount Players. However, although the TV series is still planned, the new Rugrats movie has reportedly been shelved for the time being.

Rugrats focuses on a group of toddlers, Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, twins Phil and Lil DeVille, and Angelica Pickles, and their day-to-day lives that became adventures in their imaginations. The original Rugrats Nicktoon series launched in August of 1991 and instantly became a groundbreaking phenomenon, spawning consumer products, three hit theatrical releases, various video games and cementing its place in pop culture history through its iconic characters, storytelling and unique visual style. Rugrats was in production for nine seasons over the course of 13 years, and also spawned three spin-off series, All Grown Up!, Angelica and Susie's School Daze and Rugrats: Tales from the Crib. The series earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids' Choice Awards and its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Kidscreen Announces Launch Of Next Wave Mentoring Program To Help Animation Students Preparing To Graduate

New three-month initiative aims to help animation students find industry jobs


A select group of third- and fourth-year students from world-leading animation programs will be paired up with industry mentors based on the type of work each student is interested in focusing on after graduating.

Each matched pair will have three video calls over the next six weeks to discuss entry-level career planning, identify and develop leads for employment opportunities, and review the student’s portfolio of work.

A second six-week phase of mentoring with another group of students and mentors is planned to begin July 20 and run until the end of August.

Kidscreen is thrilled to announce the launch of its Next Wave Mentoring Program, a three-month initiative designed to connect post-secondary animation students preparing to graduate with experienced mentors who can help guide their successful entry into the kids entertainment industry.

A select group of third- and fourth-year students from world-leading animation programs will be paired up with industry mentors based on the type of work each student is interested in focusing on after graduating. Each matched pair will have three video calls over the next six weeks to discuss entry-level career planning, identify and develop leads for employment opportunities, and review the student’s portfolio of work. Schools participating in phase one are: California Institute of Arts (US), Sheridan College (Canada), Gobélins—L’École de L’Image (France), Ballyfermot College and the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (Ireland) and The Animation Workshop (Denmark). And phase two will include students from NYU Tisch School of Arts (US), Centennial College (Canada), Griffith University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia) and Image Campus (Argentina).

Next Wave mentors for phase one include Billy Wee (SVP of original animation, HBO Max), Eryk Casemiro (SVP of preschool, Nickelodeon), David Levine (VP of kids programming for Europe & Africa/UK & Ireland, Disney EMEA), Janine Weigold (manager of original animation, international, Netflix), Tara Sorensen (head of creative development, children, Apple), Stephanie Betts (EVP of content and current series, WildBrain), Chris Keenan (SVP & executive producer of content development and production, Mattel), Alex Woo (former story lead, Pixar) and Colin Williams (creative director, Sixteen South).

The Los Angeles Comic Con has announced the sponge-tastic news that as part of their Main Stage Monday program, they'll be giving fans another chance to watch the SpongeBob SquarePants panel from L.A. Comic Con 2019! The re-broadcast of the event's beloved SpongeBob SquarePants panel will stream on the official Comikaze Entertainment Inc. YouTube channel (video embedded below) on Monday, June 1st at 5:30 PM PST!:

Main Stage Monday will be back this upcoming Monday, June 1st at 5:30 PM PST for a re-broadcast of our beloved SpongeBob Squarepants and Steven Universe panels from last year's show!

This past Monday May 25 over 3,000 fans tuned in to re-live some special moments from L.A. Comic Con! Many of you wrote in and asked for “More!” we've decided to keep Main Stage Monday going throughout June as a way to say “thank you” for being a friend of L.A.’s #1 fan event. ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand unveils new supercharged sales business


ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand today announced the launch of Effect, a new, premium integrated marketing solutions business.

The full-service business is purpose-built to help marketers create innovative brand partnerships and activations across the ViacomCBS portfolio of brands, including 10, 10 Bold, 10 Peach, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., 10 Play, 10 Speaks, 10 All Access, CBS Interactive, Comedy Central and their related digital and event properties.

The launch of Effect follows the merger of the Network 10 and ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand sales teams on 1 May.


ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand chief sales officer, Rod Prosser, said: “The joining together of ViacomCBS and Network 10 has created a content powerhouse spanning the best local and global brands, shows, event sports, digital media and events.

“Right now, marketers are searching for new ways to create authentic and effective connections with consumers, increase their share of voice and build sales.

“ViacomCBS now gives clients phenomenal reach across every age and every stage in the under 50s market,” he said.

“Over the past 18 months, we have executed over 60 sponsorships across the Network 10 assets alone. With the arrival of Effect, that offering is supercharged by our expanded playground, including all 10 brands and tentpole shows, news, event sports, Nickelodeon, Nick Jnr, MTV, digital and social media, and live branded events.

“Effect is a team of high-performance partnership and sponsorship specialists who will enable brands to play a role in our engaging and culturally relevant brands and platforms. The effect of Effect will be second to none,” Rod said.

As part of today’s announcement, the role of Network 10 national sales director Lisa Squillace has been expanded to include Effect. Nisar Malik and Tamar Hovagimian have been appointed sales director and partnerships director, respectively, of Effect. Both report to Lisa.

Lisa said: “The combination of the 10 and ViacomCBS brands means that through Effect, we can offer a unique, integrated sales solution that is powered by market-leading specialists, expertise, service and technology.

“Effect is more than a new sales department. It represents a new way of harnessing the power of the ViacomCBS brands, which reach 17 million Australians every month, to create bespoke and highly effective ideas for our clients and execute them across our premium platforms.

“It will also offer clients solutions that are relevant in our market and can be leveraged globally through the ViacomCBS network,” she said.

“Nisar has done a brilliant job as Network 10’s national sport sales director and is perfectly placed to take on this new role at Effect. Working side-by-side with our marketers and agencies, he will create new opportunities and take access to our audiences to a new level – any time and on any platform.

“Tamar will work with our producers and production partners to create, develop and activate brand partnerships with razor-like precision. Tamar has led a phenomenal team at Network 10 for many years, delivering countless campaigns and hundreds of very happy clients. I am so excited to see how much further she and the team can take our new, expanded offering,” Lisa said.

The announcement of Effect comes hard on the heels of last week’s launch of the new ViacomCBS independent agencies and direct sales division.
