Nickelodeon Orders New Animated Series from 'SpongeBob' Storyboarder John Trabbic III

SpongeBob SquarePants storyboarder John Trabbic III has announced the very exciting news that he's creating a brand new animated series for Nickelodeon, and that he's now hiring staff to join the show's production team to make it a reality!


On his official Twitter, Trabbic wrote:

In addition to SpongeBob SquarePants, Trabbic has also worked on Nick's Pig Goat Banana Cricket and FX's Archer.

Details of Trabbic's new Nickelodeon show are currently under wraps for now.

SpongeBob SquarePants Chillingly Reimagined by Hellboy Creator Mike Mignola

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most popular cartoon characters in the modern era, as the late Stephen Hillenburg's creation has been enjoyed by viewers of all ages for over 20 years. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola recently decided to take his own spin on the characters of SpongeBob and the results are chilling.


SpongeBob SquarePants first debuted on Nickelodeon back in 1999, becoming a huge hit for the network. The show still runs new episodes to this day and has had multiple film adaptions, with SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward and the gang becoming even more relevant thanks to internet culture and memes. Meanwhile, Hellboy first debuted back in 1993, with Mignola's acclaimed Dark Horse Comics series being adapted, like SpongeBob, into multiple movies, animated films, and in video games. While the two series couldn't be more tonally different, Mignola decided to bring his trademark style to the SpongeBob universe.

Mignola has been very active in posting some seriously amazing sketches during his self-quarantine. He's tackled everything from robot creations of his own characters to cereal mascots - with proceeds from sketch sales going to the World Central Kitchen to provide meals for those who need it. On Sunday evening, Mignola showcased some of his recent sketches with an unexpected twist, as he drew multiple SpongeBob characters, starting with this chilling drawing of the titular character and his best friend Patrick.


Patrick's face is nightmare fuel - but in the best possible way. The sketch also got a thumbs up from SpongeBob SquarePants showrunner Vincent Waller, who replied saying "Love it".

Mignola also posted a sketch of Squidward, Mr. Krabs and the villainous Plankton.


Mignola also took a stab at drawing Sandy, Gary, and of King Neptune.


Mignola's drawings might be completely unexpected, but they look stellar. His style of using thin lines, heavy shadows, and unique body proportions lend itself perfectly to the characters of the SpongeBob universe. SpongeBob characters in Mignola's style are frankly, brilliant. While it's doubtful it would ever happen, if Mignola ever released a one-shot SpongeBob comic with this type of art, it would be an incredible read.

How would the world of SpongeBob SquarePants change if it was drawn and written by Mignola? For starters, maybe SpongeBob might still live in a pineapple, but instead of it being under the sea, it's in Hell. An R-rated spin on the children's classic might be highly unlikely, but these drawings are the closest thing readers will get to a SpongeBob SquarePants/Hellboy mash-up nobody asked for until these sketches were made public.

Paramount Pushes Back Release of 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run' to Friday, August 7

Due to the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic currently sweeping the globe, Paramount Pictures has pushed back the release date of the studio's upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants movie, and will now release The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run in theatres on Friday, July 31, instead of on Memorial Day, Friday, May 22.

Update (4/14) - Boxoffice Pro is reporting that Paramount Pictures has pushed The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run back another week, and will now release the new SpongeBob SquarePants film in theatres on Friday, August 7, 2020.


The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run was one of many movies that Paramount has had to adjust the release date for. You can find Paramount's latest release schedule on Deadline.

As we currently live in a unpredictable climate due to coronavirus, its important to note that the new July 31 release date could change at any moment. It could be moved even later, as Sony Pictures moved Ghostbusters: Afterlife to a March 21, 2021 debut from its July, 10 release. There is also a chance that the release could be moved forward. Deadline has been told that many titles are flexible for all movie studios, and can always be pulled up to an earlier opening in the calendar should the crisis clear up earlier than expected. Also, most of these titles remain in post-production.

Paramount Pictures, meanwhile, scrapped the April 3 theatrical release of The Lovebirds and offloaded it to SVOD service Netflix, and the studio fast-tracked theatrical release Sonic the Hedgehog for digital purchase starting March 31.

The studio also looked to non-new theatrical content to fill the pipeline.

“We are working creatively to ensure that there is a constant flow of fresh content for both consumers and retailers to fill the theatrical void,” said Bob Buchi, president of worldwide home entertainment at Paramount Pictures. “Fortunately, we have a robust schedule of television content from CBS, Showtime, Nickelodeon and Paramount; new theatrical releases from Saban; plus a wealth of catalog initiatives, including our new Paramount Presents line.”

Based on the TV series created by Stephen Hillenburg, The SpongeBob Movie is produced by Ryan Harris, with Stephen Hillenburg exec producing. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies present, in association with MRC A United Plankton Pictures production. Written and directed by Tim Hill. An actor named Antonio Raul Corbo will be voicing young SpongeBob.

Which brings me to the question I've been increasingly asked in recent days…
“In light of the COVID-19 coronavirus, will Genius Brands be affected like other businesses?”

The answer is simple. No. The business of animated cartoons has proven over and over again, that its appeal is timeless. Like the Walt Disney Company, and as Bob Iger said at the Disney shareholder meeting last Wednesday, “What we create has never been more important or necessary.” Animated entertainment has shown to be extremely insulated to factors that other asset classes can fall prey to: the price of oil, the price of gold, Brexit, impeachment, wars, elections, recessions, and today, even the COVID-19 coronavirus.

We are a tiny company, but our model is similar to the Walt Disney Company. However, unlike some entertainment conglomerates, we don’t have cruise lines or theme parks, or live Broadway shows to be shut down. We make cartoons, and we sell licensed products from those cartoons. Kids watch cartoons through all weather and events. If baseball practice or soccer games or Girl Scout meetings are canceled, and even if school is closed down, kids will still watch cartoons, maybe even more cartoons. Our stories are uplifting, they all have positive messages and enriched content, from which kids learn, thus making our cartoons parent friendly as well.

In fact, we have witnessed an increase in viewership, which equates to more revenue, to more recognition and appeal of the characters. That ultimately equates to product sales at retail, and that is how our business makes money.

Cartoons endure. We announced Tuesday that Rainbow Rangers is now up to 26 broadcasts a week on Nick Jr.!!! We intend to share a significant number of releases regarding Rainbow Rangers in the coming days, but let me say in brief, that it is now being broadcast, in the entire western hemisphere, on the best broadcasters there are. Not just Nick Jr. in the U.S. and Nickelodeon Latin America, but also in Mexico on top kid’s broadcaster Televisa, and on top kids broadcaster, Treehouse, in Canada. From, Italy, where we are on the top kid’s broadcaster, Cartoonito, to NOGA, the top kid’s broadcaster in Israel, we see the same story. Rainbow Rangers is gaining traction. We are closing a broadcast deal with Australia and expect to announce next week a major deal with the largest and most important broadcaster in China, where Rainbow Rangers will become available to be seen by an audience of 1.2 billion. Rainbow Rangers continues to grow, and we have increasing confidence that it will meet our high expectations, as we have spoken to right from the start.

Over the coming days, we plan to roll out more and more news about what has been going on with both Rainbow Rangers and Llama Llama, as well as what is happening with our upcoming new tentpole series, Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten. We have a MAJOR retail event with Llama Llama, that we plan to announce next week and will only bring more awareness to that brand which is now strong and growing.

While the major studios, who churn out production for the networks and broadcasters worldwide, have called all live action production to a halt, our business continues to thrive and grow steadily. More content. more viewers. more consumer product licensees. We don’t have actors who have to go home because they can’t be on a set full of people. We don’t have a film crew, which is gathered together. Our artists work at their computers. And while the rest of Hollywood is grinding to a stop, we are busy creating new products for the insatiable audience that has grown out of the new technologies and streaming services…all hungry for new content.

To that point, just in the last six months we have witnessed not just the success of Netflix and Hulu, but new services popping up it seems almost daily.

The rush of new streaming broadcasters we are seeing here in the U.S., is being mimicked all around the world now.

What they share in common is that they all need product, and children’s animated content is a staple of virtually every broadcaster. What we do at Genius Brands is supply them that content, and our global sales team is busy signing deals. We now have built a rich and growing catalogue of first class animated cartoons, and we also have a robust pipeline with powerful brands yet unannounced, but which we are confident will be very much in demand.

We have had a long road to get here. We have had a lot of bumps and challenges.

But we are finally at the ‘door,’ and with this week’s announcement of financing, the road has become a lot clearer. Our earliest products now are in Target, Walmart and Amazon, and we have just barely begun to arrive at U.S. retail, with international to follow. Other than retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Amazon, our commercial partners include Mattel Toys, Nickelodeon, Netflix, Amazon Prime. They also include powerful international partners like Alibaba, Televisa, Treehouse, and China’s CCTV. As I have often stated, these companies ‘play to win.’ We are selling our shows literally around the world to the most important and established broadcasters, and we expect international retail to follow and mimic the U.S.

I want to now say a word about Walmart (NYSE:WMT). Maintaining a relationship with Walmart is fundamental to maximizing revenue and profitability. Because the cartoons we broadcast, have products which we license for retail, and with half of all retail in America occurring at Walmart, we cannot state how important this relationship is. Some of our first products are now in Walmart, however, we expect to have a robust assortment of products and categories of Rainbow Rangers products at retail in the coming 4th quarter. As we become authorized to discuss, we will share this further with our shareholders.

Having said the above, I am very privileged to have been asked to EMCEE the upcoming HELEN R. WALTON CHILDREN’S ENRICHMENT CENTER GALA. It is an annual event held in Bentonville, and one very near and dear to the entire Walmart family. The event originally planned for the first week of April, has for obvious reasons now been postponed, and has been rescheduled to take place the first week of October. I am proud to be a part of this and of Genius Brands’ connection to Walmart.

Nickelodeon France Launches 'Battle Des Classics' and 'Teen Battle' Programming Stunts

To help keep viewers stuck at home entertained during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, Nickelodeon France has launched two brand new 'Watch Your Own' stunts which lets viewers pick what shows they'd like to see aired on Nickelodeon!


Launched this week, Battle Des Classics (#BattleDesClassics) lets viewers pick which classic Nickelodeon shows they'd like to see on TV!

Each week, Nickelodeon will publish voting posts on the channel's official Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages as well as in Instagram Stores and Facebook Stories in which fans can choose between two retro Nickelodeon shows by leaving comments, with the show with the most votes airing on Nickelodeon the following Sunday at 14h30.

To kick Battle Des Classics off, fans can vote between The Wild Thornberrys (La famille Delajungle) and Rugrats (Les Razmoket)!

Meanwhile, over on Nickelodeon Teen, fans can vote for their favourite Nickelodeon Teen series with Teen Battle (#TeenBattle)!

Launched late March, fans can vote for which series they'd like Nickelodeon Teen to air by leaving comments in the specific voting posts each week on Nickelodeon's official Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages and Instagram Stores and Facebook Stories, with the winning show out of two choices airing on Nickelodeon Teen every Wednesday at 20h00.

Buitenspeeldag 2020 Moves Online in Flanders | Nickelodeon Benelux

Nickelodeon Benelux is teaming up with the Flemish government to host the 13th edition of Buitenspeeldag, Nickelodeon Benelux's localised version of Nickelodeon's "Worldwide Day of Play", and to celebrate, Nickelodeon and Kruisem have launched an exclusive competition in which one lucky entrant will a specially designed street makeover to play in during Buitenspeeldag 2020!

Update (20/4) - Due to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, many Buitenspeeldag events are having to be cancelled, including in Wevelgem and Edegem, with activities being moved online instead. Nickelodeon Flanders will also be airing tips on how kids can play and exercise at home on Wednesday 22nd April 2020.

Jij kent de Buitenspeeldag toch al? De buitenspeeldag is een initiatief van de Vlaamse Overheid en Nickelodeon. Tijdens de buitenspeeldag gaan de schermen van Nickelodeon en Ketnet op zwart. Er is geen enkel excuus om binnen te blijven: tijdens de buitenspeeldag moet er buiten gespeeld worden. Overal in Vlaanderen worden er activiteiten georganiseerd waarin je al je energie kwijt kan.

Wedstrijd

In het kader van Buitenspeeldag 2020 organiseert de afdeling Vrije Tijd een wedstrijd. De winnaar wint een unieke speelstraat - de BuitenSPEELdagSTRAAT - die zal doorgaan in zijn of haar straat! Op deze BuitenSPEELdagSTRAAT kunnen spelende kinderen tussen 13.00 u. en 17.00 u. de openbare weg in kwestie volledig innemen.

Waarin verschilt de BuitenSPEELdagSTRAAT van een andere speelstraat?

Ze gaat door op woensdagnamiddag van 13.00 u. t.e.m. 17.00 u.
Er is een wedstrijdreglement en -formulier.
De gemeente voorziet spelmateriaal en animatie voor de winnende straat.

Reglement

Om een Buitenspeeldag te kunnen aanvragen moet je straat voldoen aan alle voorwaarden opgenomen in het reglement op speelstraten. Dit kan je hier vinden.

Naast het voldoen aan de voorwaarden uit het reglement op speelstraten, zal je aanvraag voor een buitenspeeldagstraat ook beoordeeld worden op het geheel van deze criteria:

  • haalbaarheid (zie reglement op speelstraten). Deze haalbaarheid wordt beoordeeld door de administratie.
  • aantal kinderen, jonger dan 16 jaar, woonachtig in de straat (15 punten). Dit wordt onderzocht door de administratie.
  • creativiteit/originaliteit van de mogelijke activiteiten die de kinderen zelf voorstellen (25 punten). Beoordeling door de jury.
  • blijken van voldoende aanwezigheid van draagvlak bij volwassen bewoners van de straat (10 punten). Beoordeling door de jury.

De beoordeling zal gebeuren door een jury van 3 personen waaronder de jeugdambtenaar van de afdeling Vrije Tijd, iemand uit de Jeugdraad en een jeugdconsulent uit een naburige stad.

KRUISEM Het gemeentebestuur van Kruisem daagt buurten uit om ideeën te bedenken voor een buitenspeeldag. Een jury kiest het meest originele voorstel uit en laat de winnende wijk voor het verkeer afsluiten voor de organisatie van een “buitenspeeldagstraat”.
De Buitenspeeldag is een jaarlijks initiatief van de Vlaamse Overheid en Nickelodeon. Op die dag gaan de schermen van Nickelodeon en Ketnet op zwart. In het kader van de Buitenspeeldag 2020 organiseert de afdeling Vrije Tijd van de gemeente Kruisem een wedstrijd. De indiener van het meest originele voorstel wint een unieke speelstraat. De jury houdt rekening met verschillende criteria: de haalbaarheid (die wordt beoordeeld door de gemeentelijke admnistratie), het aantal kinderen jonger dan 16 jaar in de wijk en vooral: de creativiteit en originaliteit van de mogelijke activiteiten waaraan de kinderen kunnen deelnemen.

WEVELGEM De Buitenspeeldag van komende woensdag is door de coronamaatregelen afgelast. De gemeente Wevelgem organiseert daarom een digitale Buitenspeeldag met online workshops. Via Facebook kunnen kinderen circustechnieken aanleren en knutselideeën opdoen.

In Wevelgem stonden heel wat leuke activiteiten gepland op de Buitenspeeldag, maar die gaan nu dus niet door. Daarom zal de gemeente via haar Facebookpagina ‘Wevelgem jeugd’ tussen 14 uur en 17 uur enkele filmpjes van workshops posten. “Via die filmpjes worden technieken aangeleerd, waarna de kinderen zelf aan de slag kunnen”, zegt schepen van jeugd Bas Surmont (CD&V). “De instructeurs staan de kinderen live bij om vragen en problemen op te lossen.” Er staan drie live workhops gepland. Tussen 14 uur en 15 uur staat een workshop Circustechnieken gepland met Tim Vandenberghe van Circus Tico. Tussen 15 uur en 16 uur staat een workshop avontuurlijk spelen met Wildebras gepland en tussen 16 en 17 uur kan je leren knutselen met de jeugddienst van de gemeente. De filmpjes blijven ook na de workshop beschikbaar op de Facebookpagina. Op de website van de Buitenspeeldag staan nog enkele handige tips om buiten te kunnen spelen. Dan tóch Buitenspeeldag in Edegem: “Volledig online en coronaproof”

EDEGEM Het klinkt een beetje tegenstrijdig maar het gemeentebestuur heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de Edegemse kinderen de Buitenspeeldag van woensdag digitaal kunnen beleven. “Een hele middag spelen en bewegen, binnen óf buiten en volledig coronaproof.”
Op initiatief van de Vlaamse overheid en kindertelevisiezender Nickelodeon wordt in België en Nederland al jaren Buitenspeeldag gevierd. Het moet kinderen en jongeren aanzetten om buiten te sporten en spelen in hun eigen buurt en besturen en ouders stimuleren om dat mogelijk te maken. Naast Nickelodeon zenden ook andere kinderzenders zoals Ketnet, Cadet, Studio 100 TV en VtmKzoom geen programma’s uit op Buitenspeeldag om de kinderen aan te manen naar buiten te gaan. In Edegem wordt traditioneel de grote tuin van woonzorgcentrum Immaculata opengesteld voor de kinderen om te komen spelen. Door de omstandigheden werd Buitenspeeldag dit jaar geannuleerd in Vlaanderen.

Zes spelletjes
“Daarom organiseren wij onze eigen Buitenspeeldag”, zegt Lawrence Vancraeyenest (N-VA), schepen voor jeugd. “De jeugddienst heeft zes spelletjes bedacht die elk een half uur duren. Als je een foto of filmpje post van de opdracht, maak je kans op een gratis dagje speelpleinwerking bij SPED. Per spel loten we twee deelnemers die een dagje mogen komen spelen in de zomervakantie.”

Eén opdracht verklapt de jeugddienst al: “Schrijf met stoepkrijt ‘Buitenspeeldag’ op de stoep of straat en versier de letters”, zegt de schepen. “Wie niet veilig op straat kan, gebruikt een groot stuk behangpapier of losse bladen en hangt het zichtbaar omhoog. Deel een foto van je creatie via onze Facebookpagina ‘Edegemse Buitenspeeldag 2020’ zodat iedereen weet dat je deelneemt aan de Buitenspeeldag. Wie weet doen er zo nog vele andere vriendjes mee.”

De Edegemse Buitenspeeldag speelt zich woensdag af van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur.

Nick Jr. Australia Debuts 'Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power!', A New Short-Form Series Starring the Brothers from CKN Toys

Nickelodeon Australia's new locally produced preschool series Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power! is set to premiere on Nick Jr. Australia in April 2020!


The series centres around Aussie “unboxing” brothers Calvin (7) and Kaison (4), whose YouTube channel CKN Toys, which was launched in March 2015, has over 14 million YouTube subscribers and over 13 billion video views.

“At Nickelodeon we take play seriously”, says Ben Cox, General Manager of Nickelodeon Australia & New Zealand (ANZ). “Play is fun and appealing to our preschool audiences and is also vital to early childhood development, which is why we chose to hero this message in Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power!

“As children play, they develop critical cognitive, emotional, social, and physical skills. These skills children set the stage for future learning and success from the school classroom to the workplace,” says Catherine Sewell, Play Specialist.


"Stars of the popular channel, seven-year-old Calvin and his four-year-old brother Kaison have joined forces with Nickelodeon to create a short-form story-driven TV series that follows the duo on their play-ventures with best friend ROBO-G.

"Tapping into the popular unscripted, spontaneous and fun narrative style that has garnered CKN Toys a global following, each episode will see Calvin and Kaison embark on a play-venture in their Kid Cave, which is interrupted by a series of challenges including giant cakes, missing friends, playful monsters and out of control toys. In order to overcome these challenges, Calvin must transform into an everyday superhero and use his play power to save the day.

"As preschoolers follow along with Calvin and Kaison, they will experience the many benefits of play, including the development of creative thinking, problem-solving, emotional intelligence and communication skills."

Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power! will premiere on Nick Jr. Australia on Monday, April 20 at 9am. The series will also roll-out on both Nickelodeon-branded linear and digital platforms across Australia, the U.K., Asia, and Canada.

Nickelodeon struck an exclusive multi-territory agreement with the Mohawk rocking content creators in October 2019.

Jazwares are in the midst of launching a CKN Toys toy line, which infused with the brothers' contagious enthusiasm, globally. Authenticity and imagination reign supreme across the line featuring all their favourite ways to play through collectible figures, vehicles, play sets, compounds, a recognisable “Smasher” and more. The toys will then launch at to-be-named retailers in the U.S. this autumn (fall), and will also appear in Calvin and Kaisen’s upcoming YouTube content and their new short form series.

They’re Australia’s biggest YouTube stars with 13 billion views and millions in the bank. But Calvin, 7, and Kaison, 4, say they have two good reasons to stay humble. But Calvin and Kaison, two young siblings from Sydney, say despite fame and fortune, they have two very good reasons to keep a lid on it — their mum and dad. My parents always remind me that we are very lucky and I should always be humble, Calvin, 7, told Confidential. “My life is pretty normal, though, I just get to play with a few more toys.” The brothers have a YouTube channel called CKN Toys with 14 million subscribers — making it the most popular YouTube channel in Australia — where they star in videos playing with, and rating toys that are viewed by hundreds of millions of people. In total, their 650 videos have amassed 13 billions views, and using approximate online figures, 1 billion YouTube views is worth approximately $900,000 USD. Meanwhile, Calvin and Kaison, 4, will debut their own TV show, Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power, on Nickelodeon, available on Foxtel, today. Calvin said he and Kaison are grateful to have millions of followers and billions of views, but they don’t get caught up in the numbers. “We feel very lucky to have so many ‘fans’ all around the world,” Calvin said. “I don’t think about it that much, though. I just have fun doing what I do and making videos with my brother and dad.” Nickelodeon general manager Ben Cox said Play Power will move away from the “unboxing” concept that made the brothers famous, and “celebrate the power of play.” Each episode will see Calvin and Kaison embark on a play-venture which is interrupted by a series of challenges including giant cakes, missing friends, playful monsters and out of control toys. To overcome these challenges, Calvin transforms into an everyday superhero and uses his play power to save the day. Calvin told Confidential: “I hope kids and grown ups learn that play is not only fun, it also helps kids learn new things and make friends, which makes it very powerful.” For the record, his favourite toys are Marvel Avengers, Nerf, Fortnite figurines and, of course, the brother’s signature range of CKN toys. Play Power premieres on Monday at 9am on Nick Jr. available on Foxtel.
