In a new listing on their jobs board, Nickelodeon Animation has revealed that they're now hiring staff for the "SpongeBob SquarePants Universe".
The news isn't too surprising, as the network has two upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off series in the pipeline: the CG-animated prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, set to premiere on Paramount+ during early 2021; and The Patrick Star Show, starring SpongeBob's BFF and neighbor.
In early 2019, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins revealed that the network would be developing its first spinoff projects with SpongeBob SquarePants characters, and was exploring, among other options, “an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or a Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story.”
“That’s our Marvel Universe,” said Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins at the time. “You have this amazing show that’s run for almost twenty years.”
Since its launch July 17, 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has reigned as the number-one kids’ animated series on TV for the last 17 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is the most widely distributed property in ViacomCBS Networks history, seen in more than 170 countries and territories, translated in 30+ languages, and averaging more than 100 million total viewers every month. SpongeBob SquarePants was created by the late Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank. The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurable optimist and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends.
In addition to the spin-offs, Nickelodeon and Paramount will be releasing their third The SpongeBob Movie, Sponge on the Run digitally: on Netflix internationally on November 5 and on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) and Paramount+ in the U.S. in early 2021.
