Could 'The SpongeBob Musical' Be Planning To Embark on a European Tour?

Could there be a European tour of The SpongeBob Musical in the pipeline?

According to UK-based lighting designer Matt Clutterham, who helped bring Nickelodeon’s award-winning Broadway hit The SpongeBob Musical to the Theatre Royal Plymouth in the U.K. in November last year to film the TV special The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage!, which reunited all but three members of the original Broadway company, Nickelodeon was also planning to take the show on a tour across Europe!

Now, Clutterham originally revealed the news in a Tweet dated November 2019, and since then, the world has changed a lot due to the on-going global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, so plans for a European tour of The SpongeBob Musical may have now been cancelled or delayed, similar to the show's tour of North America.

Just before the pandemic struck, however, Concord Theatricals announced that it has secured exclusive worldwide licensing rights to The SpongeBob Musical.

If The SpongeBob Musical does get a European roadtrip, it'll most likely follow in the steps of the show's North American tour and feature a new company of actors. Although The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! reunited most of the original company, most, if not all have moved onto new projects now.

Adapted from the iconic Nickelodeon series SpongeBob SquarePants, the stakes are higher than ever in the staged production, as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.

The Broadway production of The SpongeBob Musical was hailed by The New York Times as “brilliant” and “effervescent candy-for-the-spirit” by New York Magazine. The show earned its place on 2017’s “Best of Broadway” lists including Broadway.com, BuzzFeed, Chicago Tribune, The Daily Beast, Deadline, ET Online, Forbes, Time Out New York and Variety. The SpongeBob Musical was named Best Musical by the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle and earned 12 Tony Award nominations – the most nominated musical of the 2017-2018 theatre season – winning for Best Scenic Design of a Musical (David Zinn).

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! was broadcast in December 2019 across Nickelodeon platforms and featured much of the original Broadway company reprising their performances, including Tony nominee Ethan Slater as the high-energy title sponge, Tony nominee Gavin Lee as Squidward Q. Tentacles, Danny Skinner as Patrick Star, Brian Ray Norris as Eugene Krabs, and Wesley Taylor as Sheldon Plankton. The TV event is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The Original Cast Recording is available now from Masterworks Broadway wherever music is sold and streamed: https://spongebobmusical.lnk.to/SpongebobMusicalRecording
