Titled Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy, the graphic novel from Dark Horse Books will be released on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Dark Horse describes the graphic novel as “the ultimate continuation” of the animated series,
Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy seems to be set in the post-series comics era of the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, so fans will get to see a new part of the original timeline that they've never seen before. This one is a spinoff comic of a spinoff comic.
Featured in The Legend of Korra, the Beifong Metalbending Academy that Toph founds here is a known part of the character’s backstory, and an integral fixture of Korra’s world. Despite that, we know little about Toph’s actual founding of the academy, making this an incredibly welcome addition to the universe.
The novel is written by Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City, The Adventures of Superhero Girl, The Last of Us: American Dreams) with input from animated series writer Tim Hedrick - who wrote episodes such as "The Deserter," "City of Walls and Secrets" and "The Puppetmaster" - with artwork from Peter Wartman (Stonebreaker, Over the Wall) and colors by Adele Matera.
Update - Below is the official synopsis for Avatar: The Last Airbender – Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy!:
"For some, perfection just isn’t enough.
Things are looking bright at the Beifong Metalbending Academy! But after all the adventures Toph’s had with Aang, Sokka, Zuko, and Katara, the whole thing feels a bit dull. Luckily, Sokka and Suki come to visit and reintroduce some familiar faces from their wandering days. And while out and about to celebrate, Toph discovers something that just might put the sparkle back in her eye…
Written by Faith Erin Hicks (The Adventures of Superhero Girl, The Nameless City) and drawn by Peter Wartman (Stonebreaker), with colors by Adele Matera and collaboration from Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series writer Tim Hedrick, this is the ultimate continuation of the hit animated series!"
Avatar: The Last Airbender — Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy opens with Toph finding life as head of the Beifong Metalbending Academy surprisingly dull, but things change — and get far more exciting — when old friends Sokka and Suki arrive to visit, bringing some familiar faces with them.
Toph was fully introduced in the Season 2 episode "The Blind Bandit" of Avatar: The Last Airbender, though she briefly appears in "The Swamp." Because of her blindness, she is able to connect to the earth in a unique way, giving her an advantage as an earthbender and allowing her to discover metalbending. After the events of the series, she establishes and leads the Metalbending Police Force in Republic City, which employs the new earthbending practice, as seen in Legend of Korra.
This is the second solo standalone graphic novel revealed after Katara and the Pirate’s Silver.
This isn’t the first time someone from the original cartoon has advised on a comic continuation of the series, with one of the show’s creators, Michael DiMartino, offering his expertise on the recent Avatar YA novels, and even co-writing Turf Wars, the graphic novel trilogy that serves as a sequel to the Avatar follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, which will hit Netflix on Aug. 14.
“I was wary of becoming the kind of property where it was like, ‘Here’s the novelizations and here’s the comics,’ without adding any value to the property,” DiMartino said of his and co-creator Brian Konietzko’s involvement in comics and books related to the show, while speaking during an Avatar panel at Comic-Con@Home. “That’s why Brian and I have tried to stay as involved as we have while trying to give [other creators] the space to put their own spin on things.”
This will be Hicks, Wartman, and Matera's third graphic novel collaboration following their work on the upcoming Katara and the Pirate's Silver, and their three-volume "Imbalance" arc on the continuation comic series.
