The new Fortnite season is set to launch on June 11th at this point, having been delayed once more from its previous release of June 4th, so there is still plenty of time for the developers to tease whatever actually is going to happen. As mentioned above, the SpongeBob rumors largely focus on the fact that the new icon, which apparently briefly appeared on the PlayStation Network store listing for the game, happens to have a very familiar-looking island in the righthand background.
You can take a look at what appears to be the new season's icon below:
What better way to introduce the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise into Fortnite than during a season that takes place "under the sea." This speculation stems from the new Season 3 icon prominently displaying a small island with three palm trees peeking above the water.
Now, it's entirely possible that this is just a familiar-looking island. Or, it could be possible that this is a hint that a SpongeBob SquarePants franchise crossover is in the works, whatever that might look like. If you're not familiar, the three-tree island is an extremely prominent part of the opening to the SpongeBob SquarePants - it floats right above Bikini Bottom, and is even visited by SpongeBob and friends on multiple occasions during the series. And it would appear that there will be plenty of nautical nonsense in the upcoming Fortnite season.
This could end up being a coincidence, but something fans have learnt from Epic Games over the years, it’s that they are open to just about any type of crossover.
Every location, with the exception of The Block, has featured alliteration, so Bikini Bottom would be perfect.
It's not entirely impossible that the upcoming season of Fortnite will include a SpongeBob SquarePants theme: Nickelodeon partnered with the game last year for a Are You Afraid of the Dark? crossover to celebrate the new miniseries, and SpongeBob has a big movie, Sponge On The Run hitting theatres in August!
SpongeBob SquarePants has actually dived deep into gaming as of late, including new mobile games SpongeBob SquarePants: Patty Pursuit and SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off, and THQ Nordic and Nickelodeon are slated to release SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, a remake of the much-loved video game, on June 23.
Some leakers have gone the extra mile and mocked up some designs about what the season would look like if it was actually a SpongeBob theme.
Fortnite leaker HYPEX revealed “skins” from the upcoming season which feature characters from the show such as Gary, SpongeBob (as well as SpongeGar), Patrick, etc

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 is currently ongoing, and Season 3 is set to launch on June 11th, following The Device event set to take place on June 4. The popular video game is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices, and will be available on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at launch.
What do you think of a possible SpongeBob SquarePants crossover in Fortnite? Is the underwater theme and little island in the icon too tenuous for you? Let me know in the comments!
