'Legend of Korra' Voice Actors Returning for Live-Reading of 'Turf Wars Part 1'

Nearly six years after Avatar: The Legend of Korra had aired its final season in 2014, Dark Horse Comics has announced that lead voice actors Janet Varney and Seychelle Gabrielle will be reprising their roles as Korra and Asami in a live-reading of Dark Horse’s Legend of Korra graphic novel titled "Turf Wars Part 1"! The live-reading is set to stream on Dark Horse’s Twitch channel on Monday, April 6 at 2PM PT.

In addition to the live-reading, Varney and Gabrielle will also take questions from viewers in a moderated Q&A session, where fans are encouraged to ask questions about the series in the live-stream chat. Viewers at home can follow along with the reading thanks to a free digital excerpt of The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One that Dark Horse will release on their website the day of the live-stream at 12:00AM.

Finally, Dark Horse plans to give away a prize package to one lucky participant which will include copies of The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Library Edition and The Legend of Korra: Ruins of the Empire Parts 1-3. Instructions will be provided during the live-stream for viewers to enter, with one entry allowed per person.

For those who can't make the live stream, Dark Horse will share a VOD afterwards, time/date to be announced.

First published in 2017 as the official continuation of Nickelodeon’s critically-acclaimed animated series, The Legend of Korra Turf Wars Part 1 begins with Korra and Asami leaving the spirit world and returning to Republic City only to find political hijinks and human vs. spirit conflict, as a pompous developer plans to turn the new spirit portal into an amusement park, potentially severing an already tumultuous connection with the spirits. In order to get through it all, Korra and Asami vow to look out for each other—but first, they’ve got to get better at being a team.

You can also check out the sequel yourself on Amazon and Kindle / Comixology.

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzo, Avatar: The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, where it followed the adventures of Aang’s successor Korra, a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe.

The sequel series aired for four seasons from 2012-2014. It was also met with critical acclaim as it received praise for dealing with respect to issues regarding race, gender, and sexual orientation. The Legend of Korra had also earned awards from award-giving bodies including the Daytime Emmy Award, Annie Awards, and Gracie Award.

Avatar: The Legend of Aang had also celebrated its 15th anniversary last February. In 2018, it was revealed that Netflix along with the show’s original creators are teaming up to develop a live-action series adaptation. Creators assured fans that the remake will be culturally appropriate and will be featuring a non-whitewashed cast unlike M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 film adaptation.

Dark Horse’s award-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender program has seen multiple number-one New York Times bestsellers and continues to grow. The Legend of Korra: Ruins of the Empire Parts 1-3 is the latest series in an ongoing partnership between Nickelodeon and Dark Horse to bring fans the very best in graphic novels.

This three-part graphic novel series is written by Nickelodeon TV series co-creator and executive producer Michael Dante DiMartino, drawn by Irene Koh, with covers by Heather Campbell, and consultation by TV series co-creator and executive producer Bryan Konietzko.
