Although the decision did disappoint fans, the postponement of KCA 2020 was necessary to keep the safety and well-being of attendees and every person involved with the show safe and well.
SlimeFest 2020, which was set to take place alongside this year's Kids’ Choice Awards was also postponed, then later canceled.
We currently live in unprecedented times, with a lot of things we know and love getting a bit of a makeover to keep the show going.
A new date for Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 has yet to be set, however, I thought I'd explore a couple of ways the rescheduled Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 may look this year. I'll call both options Physical and Virtual. *Puts on John Oliver glasses*
The Physical Option: One way Nickelodeon could present this year's Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 is to hold it in July/August, with the ceremony either replacing or being combined with Nickelodeon's annual Kids’ Choice Sports awards. This option would depend on a lot of things first, however. We still don't know how long the pandemic or the lock down will last. It also depends whether Nick was planning to host a Kids’ Choice Sports ceremony this year - if not, they may have trouble securing a venue, as a lot of other performances and tours have been postponed due to the pandemic, so they'll be some serious competition.
Which brings me to the Virtual Option: Over the past few years, to compliment the global Kids’ Choice Awards, Nickelodeon in Germany, Switzerland and Austria has held a localised version of Kids' Choice Awards titled Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, which, held at a top amusement park in Germany, revealed Nick GSA's local KCA winners as voted for fans in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, and treated fans to musical performances, special appearances and smiley moments from some of the region's best known stars.
This year was going to be no different - until when COVID-19 hit, resulting in a lockdown. However, instead of postponing the ceremony, Nickelodeon moved the ceremony online - which took place entirely in the homes of the hosts, winners, special guests and performers! Nickelodeon's world-famous slimming's were not left out from the 'From Home' production - in a creative way, the stars took this into their own hands, including Favourite Social Media Star winner Julia Beautx sitting in a bath full of slime!
The whole ceremony helped Nickelodeon to highlight to kids and young people at home that, especially in the current situation: "You are not alone. Because we are also at home right now."
Putting on a show like this may seem tricky to organize - however, Nickelodeon has had experience in putting on a show like this. In March, Nickelodeon threw together #KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall, an hour-long special hosted by actress Kristen Bell (The Good Place) and featuring many special guests in as little as a week using a conference call service such as Zoom.
At the moment, I would say that the 'At Home' model is the most probable way we'll be seeing Kids' Choice Awards this year.
Another thing I haven't really talked about yet is the host. Chance the Rapper was set to host Kids’ Choice Awards 2020, and Nickelodeon even recently hinted that that's still the case by wishing the singer Happy Birthday using the graphics from the 2020 Kids' Choice Awards
Although it would be great to see Chance continue to host Kids’ Choice Awards 2020, unfortunately, it may not fit into his schedule.
If Chance isn't available, I personally think that Nickelodeon should make Kristen Bell (pictured above) the host of Kids’ Choice Awards 2020. She did an outstanding job hosting #KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall - and, although some would argue it's not the time to think about things like this, would make Bell the first female host of Kids’ Choice Awards in over well over a decade.
One thing I haven't mentioned yet, but is also possible: Nickelodeon could combine the global Kids' Choice Awards with localized versions of Kids' Choice Awards in Latin America (Argentina and Mexico), Brazil (Meus Prêmios Nick) and Abu Dhabi to make one big show.
These are just my thoughts. The finalized version of Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 could look totally different than the options I've listed above. Tell me what you think in the comments below or let me know on social media!
