From Variety:

TV Tries to Talk to Kids About Coronavirus

Nickelodeon, Disney and Sesame Workshop, three of the nation’s best known makers of kids’ entertainment, are going to start tackling more dramatic stuff.

The ViacomCBS kids’ network will tonight at 7 p.m. eastern present “#KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall,” an hour-long special that aims to help kids gain more understanding about changes wrought in their lives by the spread of coronavirus. Disney Channel, meanwhile, on Friday unveiled a series of messages from many of the actors who populate its programs that show up in breaks between shows. And Sesame Workshop this week will distribute videos that talk about how to sneeze properly and providing comfort, among other topics. One highlight: a “Washy Wash” song from Elmo.

Getting the tone right is crucial. “We want to strike a balance between being informative and not frightening kids,” says Paula Kaplan, executive vice president of talent for Nickelodeon, in an interview.

All three media outlets typically offer comedy, music and humor. But they also feel a responsibility to help their younger viewers through a tumultuous era.

Nickelodeon’s Kaplan says the news show will be hosted by actor Kristen Bell (pictured, above), whom many viewers will know through her affiliation with Disney’s “Frozen” franchise, and mix in recommendations for staying healthy while examining changes brought on by social distancing and sheltering at home. Guests, who connected with Bell via video from all over the United States, include Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, the California Surgeon General as well as former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, along with Ellen Degeneres Charli D’Amelio, Kel Mitchell, Kenan Thompson, Russell and Ciara Wilson, JoJo Siwa, Jayden Bartles, Lea Michele, John Cena and Tia Mowry.

The show will tackle everything from how to ask a parent to help with a math problem to whether a pet dog can get the contagion, Kaplan says, along with other topics.

The Disney interstitials include cameos from Milo Manheim, Kylie Cantrall, Meg Donnelly and Sky Katz, among others. The company consulted with Dr. Arthur Pober, a specialist in media, education and child psychology. Animated Sesame spots will be distributed animated spots will be distributed via partners including HBO, PBS KIDS and local PBS stations, Univision, the Ad Council and YouTube. Additional tools that include coping strategies and child-friendly explanations for tough questions are available on SesameStreet.org/caring

Nickelodeon has a well-regarded history in speaking to children during moments of crisis or confusion. Between 1992 and 2015, the kids’ outlet produced more than 150 episodes of “Nick News” with well-regarded anchor Linda Ellerbee. The series tackled issues ranging from global warming to hate crimes and sexual harassment. Disney has also recently worked to talk to kids about serious issues, including a series of vignettes that talked about what to do if a child finds a gun in the house. The Disney Channel series “Andi Mack” tackled gun safety issues in 2018. And Sesame Workshop has for decades talked to kids about all kinds of issues ranging from death to having a parent who may be incarcerated.

But those efforts were prepared with lots of advance time. Nickelodeon’s Kaplan says the new special came together over the last seven days, with producers reaching out to actor Bell after seeing her social-media postings about how her family has coped with the pandemic. “She has been living thorough this. Her husband was quarantined and for a time was away from the family,” explains Kaplan. “She has handled this with humor and empathy and really just talks directly and specifically to kids.”

Producers were working on the program, which will be taped, over the weekend, says Kaplan. Many previous kids’ news specials featured guests talking to children in the studio, but “this was a very different model,” the executive says. “Nobody could be together.”

'We've been at each other's throats': Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard admit self-isolating with kids is 'stressful'

They are one of the most popular and down-to-earth celebrity couples in Hollywood.

And Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard pulled no punches as they joined Katie Couric for an Instagram Live session on Monday.

Asked how they are doing during the 'safer at home' order due to the coronavirus crisis, Shepard responded: 'We're getting along good with the kids and we're getting along good with adults we're friends with... This has been stressful for mom and dad.'

Bell continued the candid exchange, saying: 'We've been at each other's throats real bad, real bad, oh yeah.'

Shepard pointed out that sitting side by side for the social media appearance was 'as physically close as we've been in a couple of days.'

'America's sweetheart has some character defects... just want to let you know,' he said.

Bell, 39, and Shepard, 45, have been together since 2007, announcing their engagement in 2010 and marrying in 2013.

They have two daughters - Lincoln, seven, and Delta, five.

The couple spoke to Couric to plug Bell's Nickelodeon coronavirus special set to air Monday night.

The hour-long #KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall will be simulcast across Nickelodeon, TeenNick and Nicktoons beginning at 7 p.m. It will also be available on Nick On Demand, Nickelodeon YouTube, the Nick App and the Nick Pluto TV channel following the live screening.

'Parents have a better ability to assess.. 'we're having trouble coz we're spending so much time together, this is crazy, we need to be gentle with one another',' Bell explained. 'Kids don't have that language, and sometimes adults use really scary words and the kids don't yet even know how to ask the questions they're thinking of.'

The special will feature kids asking questions about COVID-19 as well as experts including the Surgeon General of California, Bell said.

From USA Today:

'This is weird': Kristen Bell hosts star-studded Nickelodeon coronavirus special for kids

Monday night's "#KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall” brought many celebrities together – by way of videos and video chats, of course.

The hour-long special hosted by Kristen Bell answered young people's questions about the coronavirus pandemic, shared how kids were making an impact during the health crisis and helped separate fact from fiction. It even attempted to calm fears of a toilet paper shortage. Thankfully, Tara M. Sinclair, associate professor of economics and international affairs at The George Washington University, predicted "our bums are going to be OK."

"The good news is that there's lots of toilet paper in the warehouses, and it's really a pretty easy product to make," she assured viewers. Phew!

Several celebrities also revealed how they were spending their days in quarantine.

"Stranger Things" actress Millie Bobby Brown and her sister Ava were working on memorizing a map of the U.S. "Black-ish" star Anthony Anderson constructed garden boxes.

Ciara said she, her quarterback husband Russell Wilson and their kids are "finding ways to be creative with our schedules."

The "Like a Boy" artist said they've been staying active while being indoors.

"We just turned the house into a soccer field," she said. "It's been a lot of fun."

Kevin Hart is also enjoying quality time with his expanding brood. "I'm gonna be honest with you, I've been just spending time with my wife and my kids," he said. "Getting to know my family more, loving them as much as I possibly can. Finding ways to just improve, to be better."

Ellen DeGeneres understands the challenges people are facing. "This is a hard time, I get it," she acknowledged. "I'm stressed, but I'm also exercising every day. I'm taking walks. I'm playing Frisbee with my dog."

"Hang in there," the comedian added. "We're all gonna be OK."

Josh Gad is also getting in face time with his family and pet. "My kids and I are going on a lot of walks," he said. "My dog has never been happier in her life."

Singer Charlie Puth revealed he's attempting to learn the guitar and suggested people pass the time with a new hobby, while tennis legend Serena Williams highlighted her garden. Singer Meghan Trainor showed off her fort-building skills and said she was spending her time writing songs and working on arts and crafts.

Musician Alicia Keys performed her song "Underdog" during the special.

"Music is so powerful. It brings us together," the author said while playing a purple piano. "Sometimes challenges do the same thing. They show us who we are, what we're made of. And there's nothing we can't get through when we do it together. So, I want to dedicate this song to us, for defying the odds."

Bell also showed off her talents, joining an a cappella performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and learning the #DistanceDance from TikTok personality Charli D'Amelio.

Bell closed the program by acknowledging this unprecedented time.

"This is weird," she said. "We've never experienced anything like this, not in your lifetime, not in mine, not even in my mom's."

"Yes, the world has hit a reset button, but resetting isn't all bad." she added. "We're being forced to look at the world and our friends and our family with more love and more gratitude. I think I needed a little reset on that. I think maybe we all did."

Bell and her husband, actor Dax Shepard, have tried to help those struggling during the pandemic. The pair decided they would not collect rent from their tenants for April and donated $150,007.96 to No Kid Hungry. Bell said on Instagram that the $7.96 came from the couple's two children: Lincoln, 7, and Delta, 5.

From ET:

Kristen Bell Says She and Dax Shepard Have Been 'At Each Other's Throats' During Self-Isolation

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are getting real about the challenges of self-isolating as a family due to the coronavirus pandemic. In an Instagram Live interview with Katie Couric, Bell and Shepard said that, while things are good between them and their daughters -- Delta, 5, and Lincoln, 7 -- things as a couple are harder.

"We're getting along good with the kids and we're getting along good with adults we're friends with. This has been stressful for momma and dada," Shepard admitted.

"We've been at each other's throats real bad, real bad," Bell agreed, before adding that sitting next to each other for the interview was "as physically close as we've been in a couple of days 'cause we've just found each other revolting."

"America's sweetheart has some character defects," Shepard added.

Shepard then stepped out of the frame for the remainder of the interview, prompting Couric to suggest that Bell and her husband find a way to get some alone time in their house amid isolation.

"He's too big, Katie. He's too loud and too big. He's everywhere," Bell responded.

Bell went on to discuss #KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall, which she hosted Monday night on Nickelodeonalongside guests including Ellen DeGeneres, John Cena, David Dobrik and Noah Centineo. The special, Bell explained, was put on in an effort to listen to kids' concerns over the pandemic and offer emotional support.

"Kids are worried about missing their summer camps, they're missing their birthdays. My daughter's birthday was on Friday. It was a bummer," she said of her eldest daughter, Lincoln. "We did a big Zoom class party and had all the parents on FaceTime, but it wasn't really the same."

"It's not the world's worst thing that can happen, but those kids do deserve an opportunity to say, 'I'm bummed!'" Bell added.

As for how her own kids have responded to the pandemic, Bell said that they "have not asked a ton of questions."

"As a parent you can see when their eyes are asking questions and their mouths don't know how to say it. So we've been very open about telling them what the disease is," Bell said. "... We've tried to give them an opportunity to ask questions, but it hasn't really happened. It's kind of strange."
