Kids' channels achieve highest viewership in BARC week 53 amid Christmas vacation
The most-watched show was by Nickelodeon’s Motu Patlu
MUMBAI: Amid Christmas vacation, kids' channels viewership in India reached a new peak during week 53 (2019) with over 25 million viewing minutes, the Broadcasting Audience Research Council of India (BARC) reported.
The most liked and watched show by kids this vacation was Nickelodeon's hit Motu Patlu. It received at least 95 million viewing minutes. Motu Patlu was followed by Doraemon, a Hungama cartoon series, at second position with 57 million viewing minutes.
Motu Patlu is a classic Indian animated series on the same lines as Laurel and Hardy. The show follows Motu and Patlu, two best friends who live Furfuri who constantly run into trouble thanks to Motu’s awkward actions, and subsequently chased by a police officer before eventually getting out of it with the help of his friends. The show is one of Nickelodeon India's most watched shows, with the series reportedly garnering more than 3 million views on WowKidz, Cosmos Mayas’ and YouTube India in 2018. Interestingly, show is geo-blocked on YouTube.
Whereas Sony Yay!’s Honey Bunny Ka Jholmaal and Hungama’s Shinchan bagged third and fourth positions in the most-watch kids shows during vacation respectively. Both shows have received at least 53 million viewing minutes.
Within the top five shows binged watched by the kids, Oggy And The Cockraches, which is placed on the fifth spot, has received 49 million viewing minutes.
BARC in week 53 report said that Nickelodeon has topped the channel with 188425 weekly impressions, followed by Pogo TV with 103183 weekly impressions.
The news comes after another big year for Motu Patlu: The duo were inducted into the Madame Tussauds waxwork museum in New Delhi, did a bit of yoga with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and became a hit in China. The series also recently added another feather to its cap by winning the ‘Best Animation – Jury’ award at the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival, and was named by Google as the ninth most searched for television show globally by fans in 2019 (only one of two Indian television series to make the list).
Motu Patlu made its debut on Nick India on 16th October 2012, and has since become one of the most popular cartoons in India. The series is produced by Maya Digital Studios and Cosmos Entertainment, produced by Deepa Sahi and Anish JS Mehta, and directed by Suhas Kadav, with Sandesh Shandilya serving as the show's theme song composer. The theme song "Motu Aur Patlu Ki Jodi" is sung by Sukhwinder Singh. The success of Motu Patlu has spawned a spin-off series, Inspector Chingum, which is available on Amazon Prime Video.
