Next year’s season of Power Rangers may be returning to the world of dinosaurs. Rumor has it that the long-running superhero series will be adapting the dino-centric Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger in 2021, after this year’s second season of Power Rangers Beast Morphers concludes its run.
Hasbro has a lot to choose from as far as themes go. They could go with trains by adapting ToQger, space and the constellations with Kyuranger, wild animals with Zyuohger, or even cops and robbers with Patranger vs Lupinranger. However, it looks like Hasbro may be returning Power Rangers to their roots with another dino season by going with Ryusoulger.
Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, or Knight Dragon Squadron Ryusoulger, is the 43rd season of Super Sentai, the long-running Japanese series from which Power Rangers takes its concept and battle footage. It features a team of knights who draw on the power of dinosaurs, as well as giant battle machines called Mecha (or “Zords,” as Power Rangers names them), to battle ancient monsters, as well as a mysterious armored warrior named Gaisoulg. The series began its run last year and is likely to air its final episode in the coming months.
According to The Illuminerdi, Hasbro, the owner of the long-running Power Rangers franchise is looking at Ryusoulger to serve as the inspiration for its upcoming 2021 season. The article cites the franchise’s past success with the dinosaur theme as a motivation for picking Ryusoulger among the slate of previously-unadapted Sentai seasons and explains that Hasbro passed on the space-themed Uchu Sentai Kyuranger (or Space Squadron Nine Ranger, the season fans have been expecting to be chosen) due to the overload of Rangers and concerns that the Yellow Ranger’s protruding visor would pose a safety hazard for kids, which they felt that would be too hard to get around.
As mentioned before, this wouldn’t be the first time Power Rangers featured dinosaurs as its motif. The very first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would showcase the Rangers operating prehistoric Zords back in 1993, and the aesthetic would be utilized again in both 2004’s Dino Thunder and 2015’s two-year Dino Charge. In addition, this year’s second season of Beast Morphers will contain a special episode reuniting all three of these dinosaur themed teams, with original Red Ranger Austin St. John reprising his role as Jason.
Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger could also open the door to referencing or even bringing back more original Rangers by tying this series directly back to the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, though that is just speculation at this point.
While the writer breaking the story on The Illuminerdi has made several correct predictions in the past (including St. John’s return), it’s important to keep in mind that Ryusoulger being adapted is just an unconfirmed rumor at this point. Still, while fans may be wary of another dinosaur-based season so soon after Dino Charge, there’s no arguing that the theme is popular with Power Rangers’ target audience of kids. Additionally, the seasons featuring prehistoric creatures tend to be well-regarded, giving one more reason for Hasbro to return to the well for 2021. It's also worth noting that Jurassic World 3 is also set to hit theaters in 2021, which is when the Ryusoulger season would debut. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers debuted back in 1993, which was the same year as the first Jurassic Park film. In 2015, Power Rangers Dino Charge debuted the same year as Jurassic World. Merchandise wise, Power Rangers dino toys have always been best sellers.
There will likely be a more official confirmation of next year’s Power Rangers season in the coming months, but in the meantime, fans will be able to tune in to the second season of Power Rangers Beast Morphers when it returns to Nickelodeon some time this year.
It's currently unknown whether the next series of Power Rangers will air on Nickelodeon, as the network currently only has the rights up until 2021.
The official announcement on the next series of Power Rangers is expected to be next month. There’s a chance this could change between now and then but a slim chance seeing as we’re a month away.
The 2021 season of Power Rangers is set to be the 28th season of the iconic franchise.

Update (1/7) - It has been revealed that Simon Bennett, director of 16 total episodes of Power Rangers across Power Rangers Ninja Steel and Power Rangers Beast Morphers is now an executive producer of the Power Rangers television series.
Fans know that long-time Power Rangers crew member Judd “Chip” Lynn has previously held the title executive producer for the show – returning to the franchise with Power Rangers Dino Charge and staying through Power Rangers Beast Morphers – after the sudden departure of Jonathan Tzachor, who was the executive producer of the TV series since Haim Saban bought the franchise back in 2010. The news of the sudden switch of executive producer from Tzachor to Lynn came to the shock and delight of many fans.
I'm not going to be talking about Power Rangers on social media, other than to say it's great to be involved with a show that has such a huge loyal following. I hope everyone keeps enjoying the show.

Some of the episodes Benett has directed are “My Friend Redbot,” “The Royal Rival,” “The Royal Rumble,” and “Dimensions in Danger” from Power Rangers Ninja Steel and “Beasts Unleashed,” “Target Tower,” and the Beast Morphers season one finale, “Evox: Upgraded.” Bennett has gotten praise for his work on Power Rangers as a director, so it’s exciting to see how he’ll fair as the head of a whole season from start to finish as the executive producer.
There is currently no word at this time in regards to whether Chip Lynn is still working with Power Rangers and to what capacity.
