Gold Coast in Lights Again for Australian-First Screening of 'Dora and the Lost City of Gold'
Original Queensland Government Press Release:
The Premier has joined 400 Queensland cast and crew involved in the filming of blockbuster Dora and the Lost City of Gold for a special Australian-first screening on the Gold Coast today.
The movie is the latest release of a string of blockbusters filmed in Queensland and sees Dora The Explorer transformed from the much-loved animated series to a real-life teenager on the big screen.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Dora had led Queensland to a treasure trove of jobs and opportunities.
“Our journey to bring Dora’s adventure tale to Queensland began back in February last year when I met with Paramount Pictures during a trade mission to the United States,” the Premier said.
“I still remember saying, we did it! We knew the incredible economic boost and jobs the production would bring.
“It was a really exciting time and that excitement has only grown through the buzz of production filming and now with the movie coming out.”
The Premier said across 15 weeks of pre-production and 15 weeks of filming, Dora and the Lost City of Gold employed more than 400 Queensland cast and crew, engaged 200 small businesses and injected approximately $43 million into Queensland’s economy.
“Dora’s voyage to the hidden Inca ‘City of Gold’ would not have been possible without our own city of gold – the Gold Coast,” she said.
“In August last year, Dora was the first production to use Village Roadshow’s Sound Stage 9 following its transformation for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
“The studio was one of 16 locations across the South East used in the film including Tamborine Mountain, Tallebudgera Valley, the Old Museum in Brisbane and Palm Beach Currumbin State High School which was transformed into an all-American school campus.
“I thank Screen Queensland, Paramount Pictures and the film’s cast and crew for taking our State along on this exciting adventure.”
At a recent red carpet event in the United States, the cast of Dora talked about how much they loved filming in Queensland and working with a local crew.
Eva Longoria (Elena): “Brilliant, they were so great, they had big project after big project, so they had Aquaman and us and King Kong. It was one of the most experienced crews I’ve ever seen just for the amount of work they’re continuously doing there.
Isabela Moner (Dora): “Amazing, I love Queensland and I want to go back. They were wonderful, Aussies are such good people. Specifically, I’ve never seen so many women crew members which is so cool, really, really, cool and it felt like such a great environment to be surrounded by.”
James Bobin (Director): “Goldy, I loved it, we had a really fun time. We were there for a long time, about 7 months last year and I loved it.”
Eugenio Derbez (Alejandro): The people in Queensland are the best crew I’ve ever worked with, I swear. They’re the nicest people in the universe.”
Screen Queensland’s Acting CEO Jo Dillon said the Production Attraction Strategy was driving a broad range of ongoing positive outcomes for Queenslanders.
“Major feature film productions such as Dora create jobs and opportunities that have made Queensland crews and studio facilities among the most sought after in the global screen industry,” Ms Dillon said.
“They also drive tourists to our shores by showcasing our picturesque locations and the Production Attraction Strategy has made this possible by supporting back-to-back productions in Queensland”.
Dora the Explorer is one of Nickelodeon Junior’s longest-running animated shows, translated into dozens of languages and adapted into video games, stage productions and now, a live-action feature film.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold tells the story of Dora – now a teenage explorer – who accompanies her friends on an adventure to save her parents and solve the mystery behind a lost Incan civilization.
It is released in cinemas Australia-wide on 19 September 2019.
Production Attraction Strategy
Since its inception in 2015–16, the Palaszczuk Government through the Production Attraction Strategy has secured 23 high-end television series, feature films and post, digital and visual effects projects to Queensland creating more than 7,500 jobs and delivering a boost to the economy in excess of $679 million.

Girl Guides attend Dora movie screening in Brisbane
A HUNDRED young girl guides attended the Dora and the Lost City of Gold Brisbane premiere.
For a lot of the youngsters, Dora is their on-screen hero and they couldn’t contain their excitement to watch the live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Dora the Explorer which was filmed at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast and on location in southeast Queensland last year.
The Paramount Pictures movie stars including Isabela Moner (Dora), Eva Longoria, Michael Pena, Danny Trejo, Jeff Wahlberg and Australian Madeleine Madden.
The film follows Dora and her friends on an adventure through the jungle in an attempt to save her parents.
Girl Guides Queensland’s State Commissioner, Velia Nicholls said today’s green carpet event at Westfield Garden City’s Event Cinemas was a great success.
“What a fantastic opportunity for these young girl guides to be a part of the premiere of Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” she said.
“The excitement has been at fever pitch for weeks. The movie and guiding align very closely, with a number of our activities being outdoor orientated and adventure-based.
“There are 100 young Dora’s at this event, just waiting for the next opportunity to emulate their own screen heroine.”
Girl Guides Queensland CEO Kim Harrington said today was another great day to be a member of Girl Guides Queensland.
“Thank you to Paramount Pictures and SUPERDREAM for allowing our aspiring adventurers to be some of the first people to experience the movie in Australia,” she said.
“I am certain our leaders will be inundated with requests for the associated Dora and the Lost City of Gold activity sheets and program activities just like we saw on screen today.”

Nick Jr. Australia's 'Ready Set Dance' Inspires Boys to Shake it Up on the Dance Floor; Season Two in Development
Preschoolers are shaking it up on the dance floor for the TV screen, and they've got the moves to match.
Boys step up: Preschoolers rehearse for Ready, Set, Dance, a program for Nickelodeon Jr. Picture: Chris Lane
Dance students are getting in the groove for the second series of Ready Set Dance for Nickelodeon Australia's top-rated preschool channel, Nick Jr.
With all the noise surrounding the #BoysDanceToo movement, Sutherland Shire kids are backing the trend.
Since the show launched in January, there has been a 15 per cent increase nationally of boys taking up dance.
In the past, when boys turned up to a dance class filled with pink tutus, they were most likely only males there. But how times have changed.
At Menai, which has 16 boys in the preschool program and more than 80 enrolled in the school-aged classes, the trend away from 'girls only' has well and truly shifted.
The dance program teaches preschoolers coordination, creativity and confidence through lively movement. It aims to develop physical sensory, language, cognitive, social and emotional skills.
Ready Set Dance has its roots in the shire. It was originally created by dance studio owners and is now held in 190 dance studios across Australia.
The shire's Natalie Ettingshausen, owner of Ettingshausens, is one of the program directors. The preschool dance educator and dance studio owner joined forces with Planetdance Menai and All Starz Performing Arts Peakhurst in 2014 to create the innovative class-based dance program specifically for preschoolers. The group identified a gap in the market when their own kids hit their preschool years.
Nickelodeon Jr. has made a conscious effort to ensure the show appeals to boys. One of the animated characters of the show is a snow leopard named Freeze, who loves hip hop and freestyle.

Ready Set Dance director, Jade Barnes, says the chance to star on the television has boosted the number of participants.
"The Billy Elliot Story we are all familiar with still exists but there has definitely been a change in the support for boys in dance," Barnes told the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader
"Dads who were once reluctant to allow their sons to join a dance class are becoming more accepting."
"We are very passionate about seeing as many boys give it a go as possible. It was important to us to provide an alternative to the traditional daddy-daughter ballerina themed dance so we created our own superhero duo routine. It was the hit of dance concerts all over Australia.
"Some of our studios in regional towns have been operating for more than 20 years and have never had a boy enrol in their dance studio. Many of these locations are ecstatic to report that boys are now regularly attending classes after watching the show.
"We are thrilled that our TV show has driven so many more boys to classes. They are proud to help pave the way for more young boys to point their best toe forward."
Ready Set Dance includes Ewan Herdman and Ethan Puse, who hail from a strong musical theatre background. Both starred in the professional production of Matilda The Musical and attend dance studios in the shire.
"When I was in primary school, I was the first boy who joined the dance group," Ewan said. "It's really cool to see that so many boys are now enjoying dance as much as I do."

Boing in Spain to Premiere 'Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn' on Monday 16th September 2019
Boing, the Spanish free-to-air (FTA) television channel owned by a joint venture between Mediaset España and Warner Bros., has acquired the rights to Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, and will start to air Nickelodeon's popular live-action comedy series from Monday 16th September 2019!
Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn follows the adventures of the 12-year-old Harper quadruplets Nicky (Aidan Gallagher), Ricky (Casey Simpson), Dicky (Coronel) and Dawn (Lizzy Greene) who don’t have much in common, except their birthday, but know they can do anything when they stick together. Rounding out the cast are Allison Munn (That '70s Show) who plays the Harpers' mother Anne, Brian Stepanek (The Loud House) as their father Tom, Kyla-Drew Simmons as Dawn's best friend Mae, and, in later episodes, Jonah Hwang as Britt, the Harper's new exchange student from Australia.
NRDD ran for 84 episodes over four seasons between September 13, 2014 and August 4, 2018, and was a consistently strong ratings performer for the network.
Michael Feldman, who developed the comedy with Matt Fleckenstein, served as executive producer and showrunner for all four seasons. Fleckenstein, who previously worked on several of Nick's live-action scripted originals including Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly and Victorious, stepped down as executive producer after Season 2, segueing to a consultant capacity.

Angela de Silva to Guest Star in 'Ryan's Mystery Playdate' Halloween Special
Angela de Silva has revealed the exciting news in an interview with the San Marino Tribune that the actor will be guest starring in a special Halloween episode of Nickelodeon's top-rated preschool series Ryan's Mystery Playdate, which will premiere in October 2019!
“I most recently filmed the Halloween special of the number one Nickelodeon Show, ‘Ryan’s Mystery Playdate,’ which will air this October,” the actor told the San Marino Tribune.
A 2001 graduate of San Marino High School in San Marino, California, Angela has featured in movies, TV shows and shorts such as She's Just Not That Into You, 10 Things I Hate About You (the TV series based on the hit movie), The Secret Life of the American Teenager, 2 Broke Girls, Awkward., That's What Facebook's For!, Infestation: Day One, The Ladies Room, Sucker, Barackula: The Musical, and Untold Stories of the ER. Angela has also directed, written and produced episodes of She's Just Not That Into You.
Starring Ryan from Ryan ToysReview, in Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, Ryan, his parents and animated friends Gus the Gummy Gator and Combo Panda, work together to complete unique challenges and unlock mystery boxes that contain hints to help him discover who his mystery playdate is. The series encourages physical play, models positive family relationships and features a creative problem-solving curriculum.

Conscious of her expanding role in the entertainment business, de Silva realized she was as passionate about activism as she was acting. A resident of West Hollywood, she was appointed in June by its city council to serve on the Women’s Advisory Board for the City of West Hollywood.
“Activism work has always been important to me,” she said. “We help plan many women’s events, leadership conferences and give input to the city council about women’s issues to be addressed to Congress. We also co-sponsor many ‘Women in Film’ Events, and have our annual Women’s Equality Day this Sunday, August 25.”
She also oversees a monthly women’s empowerment group and is in the process of starting a non-profit organization which aims to feed the homeless and provide jobs for people just out of community training programs. But de Silva feels she has reached the pinnacle of whatever political career may exist.
“People joke that I should run for city council or for mayor,” she said with a hearty laugh.
“But I am not a fan of the election process. I like being involved but I don’t think I want to run at this time. I’m excited to continue to watch everything unfold, and the more I remember to come back to the present moment and have gratitude for what is around me, the more I am able to see all the everyday miracles and really enjoy the journey.”
Her parents, Ann & Jay de Silva, still reside in nearby Chapman Woods. She has a sister, Sandra, and brother, Dinesh, and still considers San Marino “home.”
“I never take for granted how fortunate I am to be following my passions so close to my parents, brother and sister’s families, and hometown of San Marino,” de Silva concluded. “Having gone to kindergarten at Valentine, then all they way to graduating from San Marino High School in 2001, I always feel nostalgic driving through the neighborhoods and on Huntington Drive. Though so much has changed, I’ll never forget the numerous Homecoming and 4th of July parades, visits to the Huntington Library, and so many other wonderful memories. I know that what I learned in those years in San Marino helped shape the person I am today.”

On This Day in 1998 | Cousin Skeeter Premiered on Nickelodeon
On this day 21 YEARS AGO Cousin Skeeter premiered on Nickelodeon! How old were you when you first met Cousin Skeeter?
Also on this day 26 years ago: Nickelodeon UK launched!
Cousin Skeeter starred Robert Ri'chard as Bobby, a young boy whose life changed when his strange cousin Skeeter came to live with his family. With Skeeter's help, Bobby learns life lessons and tackles the ups and downs of growing up. The show also included Meagan Good as Bobby's friend Nina, Rondell Sheridan as Bobby's father Andre, and Angela Means as Bobby's mother Vanessa. Skeeter is portrayed by a hand puppet with Bill Bellamy providing his voice,[1] and Drew Massey performing the puppetry, assisted by Alice Dinnean. Within the show, Skeeter is treated like a regular human and no mention of him being a puppet is made. Although the series was shot in a single-camera format, the show used a laugh track. The series ran for 52 episodes over three seasons between September 1, 1998 – May 19, 2001. The show's theme song is an alternate version of 702's 1996 hit "Steelo", written by Missy Elliott.
Meagan Good recently shared behind-the-scenes stories from Cousin Skeeter (like the time she got pulled over by Shaquille O’Neal!) on an episode of Throw Back with Nickelodeon hosted by Anthony Padilla (her reaction to seeing Cousin Skeeter puppet for the first time in 20 YEARS 😭)!
