Slime Time: Lena Meyer-Landrut and Lena Gercke Receive Epic Slime Shower to Celebrate Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2019: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz
Paramount Unveils New Details About 'SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge' at CinemaCon 2019
Paramount Pictures revealed further details about the storyline of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies' SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge today at CinemaCon 2019 in Las Vegas!
The official logline for SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge, the third SpongeBob SquarePants movie based on Nickelodeon's iconic animated series, reads: "SpongeBob and Patrick go on a rescue mission to save Gary, who’s been kidnapped by Poseidon and taken to the Lost City of Atlantic City. The movie will reveal the first time our beloved characters (as kids) met at Camp…a magical moment that brings meaning to the power of true friendship."
In addition to the plot being revealed, a small snippet from the film was also shown to the audience at CinemaCon 2019!
The plot revealed today further confirms that SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge will be an origin tale with a bit of an homage to the Frank Capra holiday classic It's a Wonderful Life. Mireille Soria, president of Paramount Animation, revealed at the VIEW Conference in Turin, Italy in October 2018 that "for the first time ever, we're going to get to the origin of how little SpongeBob met the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang at summer camp," adding that "the film's opening will take place at Camp Coral when all of our favorite characters meet for the first time."
In addition to delving into SpongeBob's character history, the film is also set to depart from previous films as well as the television series in terms of how it's made as well. It's a Wonderful Sponge will be the first SpongeBob feature film not to be animated by the South Korean studio behind the TV show, Rough Draft Korea. Instead, Montreal-based Mikros Image will animate the film. The film will also be the first SpongeBob movie to feature entirely computer-generated animation as the first film was hand animated while the second, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, featured a mix of hand animated and CG-animated scenes.
SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge is scheduled to be released in theaters on Friday, May 22, 2020, to coincide with the Memorial Day Weekend, and as the culmination of Nickelodeon's the “Best Year Ever” event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, which kicks off Friday, July 12 with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special that will feature for the first time the celebrated voice talent behind SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward and Plankton playing live-action doppelgänger versions of the animated characters they voice. In the one-hour special, Patrick and SpongeBob journey to the surface world, where they come across a few familiar characters during lunchtime rush at The Trusty Slab restaurant. Meanwhile, the Bikini Bottom residents set up a surprise party for SpongeBob.
Sitting in the director's chair for the movie will be Tim Hill, known for his work on the TV series, who will be directing from a screenplay by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger and Michael Kvamme. Additionally, Hill co-wrote the script for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cinematographer Larry Fong boarded the project in December 2018. Expected to lend their voices to reprise their roles as well are voice actors Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Clancy Brown, Mr. Lawrence, Jill Talley, Carolyn Lawrence, Mary Jo Catlett, and Lori Alan. Composer Hans Zimmer will also be providing the music.
Sadly, this movie marks the first SpongeBob SquarePants production to follow Stephen Hillenburg's death. The creator of SpongeBob passed away in November after a battle with ALS, ans is expected to receive an "In Memory Of" credit in the movie.
The film will be the third in the series with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie having been released in 2004 and its sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, in 2015.
Both The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water were box office successes for the studio, bringing in a combined $465.3 million on a budget of $104 million between the two films.
Since its launch in July 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has emerged as a pop culture phenomenon. The series has been the most-watched animated program with kids 2-11 for more than 15 consecutive years, and over the past several years, it has averaged more than 100,000,000 total viewers every quarter across all Nickelodeon networks. SpongeBob SquarePants is the most widely distributed property in Viacom International Media Networks history, seen in more than 208 countries and territories and translated in 55+ languages. The Paramount Pictures feature film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water premiered Feb. 6, 2015, landing at #1 opening weekend. The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Among those friends are SpongeBob's best friend, a pink starfish named Patrick Star, his neighbor and co-worker octopus Squidward Tentacles, and Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas.
SpongeBob SquarePants has been renewed through to at least the show's twelfth season, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019, has its own critically acclaimed Broadway show, which is set to tour the U.S. from Fall 2019, and has a third upcoming movie, The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge, set to be released in Summer 2020!

Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty centers around a spirited and adorable kitty named Felicity who acquires magical and majestic powers. Part rainbow, part butterfly, part unicorn and 100 percent kitty, Felicity has transformative powers where she can lasso items in the form of a full-fledged rainbow, shoot glow sticks from her paws, fire lasers from her unicorn horn, stretch and snap in rainbow mode, and clap thunderously with her butterfly wings. Siwa will also take the stage at this year’s Nickelodeon SlimeFest--a two-day family-friendly music festival held in Chicago, Ill., at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on June 8 and 9--along with Pitbull, Bebe Rexha and T-Pain. Siwa helped kick off Nickelodeon’s inaugural U.S. SlimeFest last year, where she performed in front of over 24,000 fans.
Siwa recently won her third Kids’ Choice Award for “Favorite Social Music Star.” Her previous Choice Awards include “Favorite Viral Music Artist” in 2017 and “Favorite Musical YouTube Creator” in 2018. She also performed at Kids’ Choice Mexico 2018.
In November, Siwa released her first EP, D.R.E.A.M. The Music, featuring four new songs: “D.R.E.A.M,” “My Story,” “Everyday Popstars” and “Only Getting Better.” The music video for “D.R.E.A.M.” was released on Siwa’s YouTube channel and to date has garnered over 40 million views. Just last month, Siwa dropped her latest single, “Bop.” The accompanying music video has already accumulated over 4.4 million views on her YouTube channel.
In 2016, Nickelodeon and Siwa entered an exclusive licensing partnership to develop a line of consumer products inspired by Siwa. Categories span toys, apparel, accessories, consumer electronics, Halloween costumes and more. To date, over 50 million JoJo Bows have been sold. Siwa’s consumer products are available internationally, including the UK, Canada, Australia and Mexico.
Siwa launched her first animated shorts series, The JoJo & BowBow Show Show starring Siwa and her furry best friend BowBow. She also works alongside Nick Cannon in Nickelodeon’s hit competition series Lip Sync Battle Shorties. She has also appeared on various Nickelodeon live-action series including School of Rock and The Thundermans. Siwa performed a medley of hits at Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards, including her triple-platinum smash “Boomerang.” She also won two blimps for Favorite Viral Music Artist in 2017 and Musical YouTube Creator in 2018. This summer, she performed at Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards Mexico.

Treehouse Canada to Premiere 'Cleo & Cuquin' on Friday, April 5, 2019
Treehouse TV in Canada will start to premiere and show the popular animated preschool series Cleo & Cuquin Fridays at 8:55am ET/PT from Friday, April 5, 2019! Based on the classic Familia Telerín cartoon, the series (78 episodes and 30 musical clips) from Spain’s Ánima Kitchent and Mexican free-to-air (FTA) broadcaster Televisa.
Aimed at four- to five-year-olds, the show follows the adventures of the most famous Telerín kids. Each episode finds little rascal Cuquin getting himself into trouble, with big sister Cleo doing her best to get him out of it — with the help of Teté, Pelusín, Colitas and Maripí. Together, the brothers and sisters play their way to the answer, pretending to be astronauts, scientists, pilots, or whatever is needed to get the job done. At the end of their journey, Cleo makes up her mind about what she wants to be when she grows up … at least for that day.
In the series premiere episode, "The Premiere," when Cuquin accidentally ruins Maripi's hairdo on the opening night of her school's play, Cleo sees it as an opportunity for the siblings to be hairdressers. (#101)
The news follows Nick Jr. USA, Nickelodeon's top-rated preschool channel, premiering Cleo & Cuquin in January 2018.
Cleo & Cuquin | New Series Fridays at 8:55am April 5th | Treehouse
Meet Cleo and her brother Cuquin! They love to kid around but are less keen on cleaning up! Join Cleo & Cuquin on Treehouse, Fridays at 8:55am ET!
Mattel has been named as the global master toy partner for the brand, and recently launched a line of toys. Televisa Consumer Products has also signed a number of agreements in Mexico with consumer brands including Lala Milk, Atlas Mattresses and Fotorama, and Penguin Random House published children’s books series based on Cleo & Cuquin in Spain and Latin America by spring 2018. The deals mark the first time a Spanish company has established a licensing deal with a global toy master or a publisher such as Random House.
Russia’s Animaccord has also been named master agent for the animated preschool series and will manage licensing, media rights, advertising and promotional activities, and digital efforts including apps and YouTube opportunities in Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic and Polish.
Supporting Mattel is toy maker Clementoni, who launched a line of Cleo & Cuquin-based toys in Spain in fall 2018, including puzzles, edukit toy cases and electronic games.
Created by Victor M. Lopez, Cleo & Cuquin has been developed as a transmedia brand by Ánima Kitchent, Televisa, Moro Family’s company MAI and Barcelona-based Selecta Visión. In addition to the refreshed TV show, the brand includes apps like bedtime app The Bedder, web content, and music video clips which have already generated over 600 million views and 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube in just 18 months.
HITN, the non-profit, Spanish-language media network that provides educational and entertainment programming to more than 44 million American households across the country, has also reached an agreement with producer Ánima Kitchent to include Cleo & Cuquin in an early literacy initiative to help ensure kids from transcultural homes enter kindergarten on equitable footing with their peers.
The legendary Spanish hit Familia Telerín first arrived in the late 1970s, created by José Luis and Santiago Moro. A cartoon and daily jingle, the series featured six siblings who told children that it’s time to go to bed. The show introduced the song “Vamos a la cama” (“Time for bed”), which became part of the nighttime routine of a generation of parents with sleep-resistant children. It became a popular success in Spain and Mexico during the '70s and '80s, coloring the now nostalgic childhood of a generation of newish parents and young grandparents.

NICKELODEON SLIMEFEST
NICKELODEON UK
Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST is a fun-packed family event that combines chart-topping musical acts with the opportunity for the audience to get drenched in disgusting green slime. The 2018 edition was hosted by dance act Diversity and saw nine acts performing across 3 days (October 20-22 at The Arena, Blackpool Pleasure). There were also guest appearances from Nick onscreen talent including JoJo Siwa and Kira Kosarin.
Tickets were sold out within six weeks, with 12,000 kids and families in attendance. The event is also an important corporate hospitality opportunity. This year, 400 clients and stakeholders were in attendance, ranging from sponsors and consumer product partners to talent families and network affiliates (eg Sky and BT).
Putting together a live performance music event is challenging enough in itself. But the operational complexity of staging the event goes to a whole new level when you add slimings into the mix. Mechanisms need to be designed to ensure a variety of slime executions, with optimal coverage for the kids in attendance.
While SLIMEFEST is valuable as an event in its own right, it is essential from a brand-building perspective that the content is accessible to Nick fans across all media platforms. So in addition to the 12,000 people who attended in 2018, there was a TV show which reached 237.7k viewers. SLIMEFEST 2018 also achieved social media reach of almost 12 million via its in-house activities and designated social influencers.
In the months leading up to the event, Nickelodeon’s in-house marketing team put together a 360 marketing campaign that encompassed TV, digital, print, outdoor and social media. As for the event’s PR strategy, celebrity guests and the press were invited to maximise engagement over the weekend. This resulted in 100 million opportunities to see, and £600K AVE (Advertising Value Equivalent) representing 11:1 return on investment.

The Magic Behind Salem the Cat on 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch'
The Chilling Adventures of Salem, Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s Cat
As the Netflix series returns, Vanity Fair presents us the true story of the 90s sitcom’s Salem Saberhagen: an indelible character brought to life through a combination of puppetry, animatronics, and a rotating cast of fussy felines.
Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina, talks with Salem the cat in the 7th season of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. From Allstar Picture Library/Alamy.
Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina bears some resemblance to Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the series that enjoyed a 163-episode run, on ABC and then the WB in the U.S. and on Nickelodeon UK and CITV in the U.K., from 1996 to 2003.
Both were derived from the Archie spin-off comic-book series launched in 1971. Both center on the character of Sabrina, a witchy blonde teen who acquires magical powers on her sixteenth birthday.
But one is moody and murky where the other was mirthful; black magic compared to cheerful technicolor. Nowhere is this more evident than in each show’s treatment of Salem the cat.
On the Netflix series, which returns with nine new episodes April 5, Salem—played by a squad of cats trained by Ian Doig—has a supporting and so-far silent role as Sabrina’s familiar spirit. But on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Salem was one of the show’s stars and main attractions: a sardonic, talking cat, realized by a cadre of artists and experts through a combination of old-fashioned puppetry, animatronics, and the training and wrangling of several real cats—not to mention surely some of the finest feline-centric writing ever seen on television. The show’s wardrobe department was also tasked with fashioning Salem’s outfits, including several tuxedos.
According to the show’s lore, Salem Saberhagen was a hundreds-year-old warlock, sentenced to spend 100 years trapped in the body of a black American shorthair (though he was an orange tabby in the original comics) and stripped of his magical powers as punishment for attempted world domination. When not moaning about his fate or his fur-ball medicine, Salem reads The Economist, plays Risk, and poses as a woman on the Internet (“I like the attention”). He does a smooth rendition of “Witchcraft,” but has also developed a more cat-like appreciation for getting scratched behind the ears.
The character was the recipient of piles of adoring viewer fan mail and three consecutive Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for Favorite Animal Star. Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa Explains It All), who played Sabrina and co-produced the show, considered keeping a black sock in her pocket to wield as a puppet when fielding endless Salem-related enquiries in public. One crew member conveyed his impression that one of the show’s human stars was jealous of the attention lavished on the cat.
“That show owned a generation of, particularly, girls, you know?” said Nick Bakay, a Sabrina the Teenage Witch writer who also voiced Salem. “It’s the wish fulfillment of this talking cat. What teenager doesn’t want that hanging out in their room? A cat you can confide in?”
Bakay’s tones were dry as leftover kibble and well-suited to lines like “The sound of the can opener is the only thing that makes me feel truly alive.” They added a welcome wryness to the show’s laugh-tracked, family-friendly fare.
“It’s that weird thing where animals and puppets can kind of get away with murder,” said Bakay, who also voiced voiced Norbert in Nickelodeon's Angry Beavers. “Everyone else has to keep their act a little bit cleaner. The cat was very much the beneficiary of all those sort of little sideways pitches that might not have made it in if they were delivered from a human.”
As Bakay also pointed out, the character was inherently funny. “The great thing about the character is he’s a power madman who’s been consigned to live as a cat, as punishment for trying to take over the world. So, you know, that formula right there, it’s just hilarious. He’s gone from world domination to staring at a piece of lint floating by, on a pillow in a teenage girl’s bedroom. The bitterness is hilarious.”
Network executives were initially dubious about the Salem puppet, built out of foam rubber and rabbit fur by animal fabricator and puppeteer Jim Boulden for the show’s first season. Verisimilitude was not its strong point.
“ABC did not love the animatronic cat,” said Bakay. “And I get it: it’s not like it was going to fool anyone. But I think that it was part of the charm of the show—quaint, old-school practical magic and weird cat puppets. And for some reason, it kind of worked.”
There were two main animatronic Salem puppets: one fashioned in a sitting-up position, the other in a lying-down position. Both were operated by multiple puppeteers, two of whom were stationed comfortably off-set: Thom Fountain controlled the mouth movements, in sync with Bakay’s live voice performance, while Jim Greenall, who’d also designed the puppet’s mechanical components, controlled the ear and tail movements via remote control.
Mauri Bernstein was the puppeteer hidden on set, controlling Salem’s head and body movements. Her time on the show was spent mostly behind tables, beneath the sofa, or under Sabrina’s bed, with her arm over her head. “I had to go for massages with some regularity,” Bernstein told Vanity Fair, “to maintain the flexibility to get squished into various places.”
For a while, the trio was uncertain about whether Salem ought to behave in a more naturalistic or a more cartoonish fashion. “I think ultimately we came up with sort of something in the middle,” said Bernstein, “where he was definitely a comedy character, rooted in actual, literal cat behavior, but not limited to it.”
Eventually, the three puppeteers’ disparate efforts, plus Bakay’s live line-reads, synced up to form one cohesive feline performance. “We got it to the place where Salem worked as a unified whole,” said Bernstein. As she noted, a lot of younger viewers were indeed convinced Salem was entirely real. They would write in to the show: “How did you get it to talk?!”
Having actual cats on set helped inform the realism of the puppeteers’ performances. Three main cats would typically play Salem over the course of any given episode, with several taking the role over the show’s run. They were wrangled and trained by a team led by Cathy Pittman, who scouted animals with “star quality” from animal shelters.
“We usually want the ones that nobody wants, the ones that are high energy, the ones that are outgoing,” said Pittman. “That’s why they end up in the pound. We channel that energy into training.”
With a special cat-food mixture as an enticement and reward—“kitty crack,” Pittman calls it—the cats would do pretty much anything they were called upon to do, from turning on a record player to riding an elephant to “driving” a toy Ferrari. One stunt that particularly impressed the cast and crew was Salem, wearing a fireman’s hat and coat, driving from one set to the other in a fire truck (“This is Red Eagle to squad leader,” he says) and climbing up the truck’s ladder to the kitchen counter before positioning himself before an open flame.
According to Hart, the set would reek of cat food by the end of a season. Pittman didn’t notice. “I’d been an animal trainer for a long time,” she explained. “It’s like dirty diapers to a parent.”
Different cats had different fortes. Witch was the agile action star who handled the most fur-raising stunts, while also relishing off-camera cuddles with Hart. There was a go-to crazy cat who was in fact named Salem, with the manic, volatile quality of a young Pacino. Elvis was the mellow one, exuding something like Buster Keaton’s stoicism in the face of chaos. “He would sit where he was supposed to sit,” said Bakay.
But it was the self-assured Warlock who had Hollywood in his sights, going on to roles in films as diverse as Scary Movie 2, The Prestige, and Team America: World Police. “He was a phenomenal cat,” said Pittman. “He loved the work.”
When they weren’t required on set, the cats hung out in their own trailer on the lot.
There were also a couple of stuffed, non-animatronic cats on Sabrina. They were used primarily as stand-ins during scene blocking and rehearsals, but were occasionally employed on camera if a scene required a fleeting Salem-shaped blur to shoot past the camera. They were named “Stuffy.”
Today, the original Salem puppet resides in Jim Boulden’s Camino Ranchero animal fabrication studio, frozen forever in mute mid-meow. Boulden still receives the occasional Salem-related fan mail, but screen work for sort-of, not-really convincing faux animals has dried up considerably. “The digital revolution replaced puppeteers like me,” said Boulden. “There’s just no funding for this kind of work anymore.”
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has kept Salem quiet so far, though he’s been careful not to suggest that the character will never speak in the future.
“I was curious about what they were going to do about that,” said Bakay. “I was, you know, I have to admit, kind of relieved that they went the way they did.” Boulden sounded a little less certain: “Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a lighthearted romp of a show. The new version? Not so much.”
Aguirre-Sacasa has also hinted at the possibility of an episode delving into the backstory of the character.
Ultimately, though, it’s clear the Netflix series has no place for the older show’s particular brand of television magic, or the chemistry its Salem and Sabrina shared—not least because the new Sabrina, Kiernan Shipka, is allergic to cats. “I’m fine being in the same room as Salem,” she has said, “as long as I’m not continuously petting and touching him. He’s fine.”

He’s fine.”

Berlin, 27.
